hey gang
picking up a 70s coomber school p.a system today-interesting story-got it a few weeks back on a carboot for 3 quid, sold it to a mate of mine there and then for a fiver-now decided i want to give it a chance and have asked him to let me have it back for a couple of swaps.
it has wood panneled sides, cassette on top, built in radio and audio controls on one side, including seperate bass and treble controls, etc.and the main face is one huge speaker.i do remember using them at both junior school and high school-and i remember them to be loud, and really powerful.cassette needs sorting on it though-for now ill just use the radio!
any one else got one similar?nor really a boombox i know-or is it??????????????????
I remember them from junior school too. I don't remember them being amazingly good sounding, though it was a looong time ago. I wouldn't class it as a boombox, but I wouldn't mind having one of the original wooden ones now.
I just searched on google, and they have a website! They still make them!!
Link They're described as 'educational' audio equipment.
ra-on your link mine would be the ancient version of the pa systems on there-but believe me mate-it goes really loud-not just that, really bassy!the one huge speaker is rated at 50w-on its own!!!!!!!!!!!
i have trouble with the cassette-think belts have gone-whirrs into life for a few seconds then dies (without tape in)-try and fit the tape in and play and the spools go nowhere.
anyone ever changed the belts on one of these babies?
btw r.a-how old are you?im 32-you a bit younger than me?

Yeah Andy, I'm 23. We had about 3 of those wooden coombers at my primary school. When I first saw one, it would have been around 1993-94. I liked the rugged look of them, and the wood grain on the sides, and I always thought 'coomber' on the badge was a funny name!
50W, wow that's a lot for one woofer!

andy if you think a coomber is hefty you need to get yo self a hefty 8" speaker box or something like that. would blow that away.
coombers were just used in our school for recording swear words etc god i miss the 90's

Naughty boy, get to the headmaster's office!
and 3 whips of the cane!
i first experienced a coomber in 1987 at junior school and again at high school when i started there in 1989.
and the one i have is the exact same model!
hey R.A youre just a nipper!!!!and to think they were still using the old coombers like mine in as late as 94,says something-they may only have plywood cases but they are strong.
