Hi. I'm a walkman collector really, but want to buy a cheap boombox to listen to some tunes via an mp3 player and need some help. Getting a boombox is easy enough, as there are plenty on ebay but I have no idea about connecting it to the mp3 which has a USB port. Bearing in mind that I am a complete novice in these matters, can anyone tell me in simple terms what I need to connect the two together. I want an early 80s classic looking player, but want to get one that's easy to connect. Can anyone advise what ports the boombox needs to have? Many thanks - Ian
hi ,as far as connecting an mp 3 player to it the radio only needs to have an rca type line in jack,to connect the mp 3 player to it you simply get a cable that adapts the mini headphone jack on the mp 3 player to an rca type plug that fits the jacks on the boom box these are very common cables and can be purchased at many electronics stores ,once you have plugged the cable into the radio you switch the radio to line in function and rock on.
Hi Thanks for that. The RCA line in is the one with two sockets I think - with red and white jacks. I've seen some boomboxes advertised as suitable for mp3 connecion, with a DIN type socket? Are they any good, or is it more complicated?
din sockets are used in lieu of proper rca type jacks on some boxes ,you are correct about the ones you described usually has one red and one white colored jack ,one is for left and the other is for the right channel input .
Many thanks for the advice - Ian
here is a picture of the type of lead you require....plug one side into the headfone jack of your mp3 player and the other end into your red and white inputs on you boombox and switch it to line in...........enjoy

And I would add... beware of sellers who claim that 'it's got jacks for an iPod' when it's actually only got RCA's for PHONO (turntable) which is completely unsuitable for direct connection to a line level device.. It must have LINE in. (There are converters available for use with phono inputs however).
