having just recieved a d8614 off of my man lav loo, heres my review of this machine.
first off, a picture:
the d8614THE PHILIPS MARQUE AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS
in all honesty i have never been a big philips fan, having owned several, including a d8534 and a d8300-i found them to be too plasticky and cheap looking to the eye.sound varied from rubbish to average, and to me they just couldnt hit up there with the big boys-so much quality lacking.but that was until i met the d8614.this machine is both pleasing to the eye,and very accomodating in its features-it looks strong and feels strong and well made.this would to me pass very well as a true street machine.
SWITCHGEAR AND FUNCTIONS
heres another borrowed shot of a close up of the central section of the d8614:
controlseverything is so well laid out and executed.the controls feel strong and well made, and the d8614 proves that philips knew what they were doing with this one, with the all the controls labelled clearly and easy to use-including the feather touch tape deck-which engages with a satisfying buzz from the motors-a sign of quality!and of course those led's a fantastic show of quality and accuracy from philips point of view.
SOUND QUALITY
philips machines down the years arent known for their masses of sound quality, with exceptions to the rule of only a couple.the d8614 is that exception-i have never heard a philips-let alone many other boomboxes-sound as good as this.its rated at 10w per channel-10w? sounds more like 30 or 40!the highs are clear and crisp, with wonderful rich, and deep bass.i cannot describe in any more detail than that the quality of sound the d8614 exudes.i will go on record as saying easily one of, if not the best sounding philips ever made.
SUM-UP AND VERDICT
the philips d8614 is one hell of a machine-its mean and macho looks make it ideal for the street, and the sound quality it possesses means it blows many other blasters away-if you only ever own one philips blaster in your life, then it has to be a d8614.

I'm starting to like that Phillips too. How does its bass compare to the dt680?
i can,t say panabox, iv,e never had a dt680. if you get the chance to pick one up, go for it you won,t be dissapointed i promise you
10 out of 10 for this box-the dt680 is a cobra top aint it? if it is ive had one many moons ago and it trounces it
I do like a concise and detailed review.
Not a bad looker for a Phillips but still slightly tough on the eye (sorry).
it,s what's inside the d8614 that counts agent o, very good components
and come on it looks fantastic, but then again it,s 1 of my all time favourites
It's a tough one, yeah it has good lines but once I know it's a Phillips then it becomes tough to see beauty. Would you buy a good looking Lada?

that,s easy to answer, NO i wouldn,t buy any lada full stop.
if the components inside a lada was as good as the d8614,s then i might be tempted, (not) i really don,t understand why this box gets any stick atall it performs better than most boxes out there, and in my opinion looks great
if your not happy with yours you can float it over the english channel to me, il,e be more than happy to net it

nah the dt707 and the dt75 are cobra tops. the dt680 is a 3 piecer.
ah right then.its true thou panabox, to my ears not much beats a d8614-try one and you'll believe it-the only problem i cant get past is from the front its a 3 piece and from the back its a 1 piece-and im not that much of a 3 piece lover-other than that tecnicality the d8614 is faultless
mine is a magnavox # D 8623 ..
it looks from the outside to be the same as that philips d8614-
its a real good sounding box.
anyone here have the magnavox version ?
and/or can confirm that it is an identical twin/aka ??
thanks
can you put a pic up rbj so we can compare
EVERYTHING except for the model number looks
identical to the philips--
so - only a member who has both...
and has checked out the internal components
would really know
viennasounds probably the man who can then on that score, i think he has every philips box made and maybe the magnavox version
you are prolly right
thanks
your very welcome

Oof, that's a bit harsh, Cris
Philips were defenitely at the cheaper end of things, but still a cut above the likes of Saisho & Matsui. For a car analogy, I'd go for a Ford at least ...probably a 90s Escort though
