I guess this is more of a question. I have a Gf-777 that i power up with dollar store batteries. I do it because its the cheapest (wither sunbeam or panasonic ones). I like 45 minutes outta it as i can remember but that was a while ago.

I was wondering if more exspenisive ones like enrgizer and duracell actually last longer then the dollar store ones??

I also take it that depends on how loud you blast the thing it will eat your batteries faster. I usually play mine from low to mid volume.

So i was wondering what batteries u guys use and how long do you find that they last depending on what volume level you use, mainly around low to mid. In large usints mainly like teh gf-777 or any other that takes 10 D bats.

hi there TMC, i use panasonic sometimes when i take a box to the beach, or in the garden.
i find they last a good while even at high volume.
but like you say it depends what your playing, if your using the tape it eats your batteries, also it depends what functions you have on your box like led's, loudness functions e.t.c.
these kind of extras obviously use more battery power.
but yes duracell/ energiser will last longer than your cheaper options but by how much i can,t say

Only one box i own had batteries in it.
A GF 777. I used Duracells.
They lasted for 8 hours in total

I'm using Radio Shack nickel-cadmium batteries that are really C cells that are inside of a D casing. Not the best way to go, but they work, and they where cheap ($1 each on closeout).

They last a little longer than so called "heavy duty" batteries, but not as long as alkaline. In other words about 6 hours or 5 in something really demanding. I usually bring along another set of the same if they are going to be in use for longer than that.

Nickel-metal hydride would be a better idea, but either way rechargeable is the only way to go.

And one more thing that I almost forgot about.
I ran a test on those cheap $1/4 Sunbeam batteries, Energizer nickel-metal hydride AA cells in D adapters, and Energizer alkaline D cells in three identical flashlights.

The cheap ones lasted for about three minutes longer than the AA cells. Both completely dead in about four hours. The Energizer alkaline cells lasted for about eight hours.

I'd say the cheap ones are the better deal because they cost about 1/4 as much yet last 1/2 as long as the alkalines. I'm not sure if they will pack the same punch power-wise though.

Rechargables.... They last a few hours at low to mid power and than can be recharged!!!!

I use rechargeable ones, Novacell Ni-Cd, 4500 mAh. Sounds maybe like "no name", and i don't know exact yet how long they last, but it's better for shure, then to buy new batterries every time. I bought 10 of them, each costed me about 6,40 bucks. Charger can recharge 4 or 2 batterries of every kind at the same time , costed about $10.

Seems good. I,m gona be playing my gf 777 at my booth for the towns yearly park flea market. I'll be selling my art work, so i thought i should have some ear candy too and sell myfriends bands albums. I just wast trying to figure out what i should get and how much it'll cost me to play music for 6 hours. I always thought of buying a mass amount of dollar store batteries as well cause its cheaper in the long run. But i find with them, that can't always keep up the current. they don't die , they just lose enough power not to keep heavy powered machines going. i think i'l buy a mix of both. I gotta look around for rechargeable bats and the charger for em. I don't think they sell em where i am.

But i have a feeling that my vz 2000 that i recently got will eat threw them when playing the phono.

I'm sorry Themo, but DOLLAR STORE BATTERIES??? That's just like puttin' cheap gas in a Corvette!!! But, I guess you gotta do what you've got to do!!!

I've always used Duracells myself, although Radio Shack's Supercell batteries, are compatible with my Realistic SCR-2. I never cared for those re-chargeble Energizers very much because they don't last very long between charges!!!

Another trick that I've learned from experience, is to never set your Box on concrete surfaces because that'll drain your batteries quicker!!!

I use rechargeable ones my self the Tenergy brand with 10000mAh they last pretty long...and i look for sales for alkalines in some discount dept stores usually way cheaper than major stores...i get them as low as 2.00 a pack...

lol, but i take it dollar store batteries can not hurt your boom box. I only bought them to test if the batts work on my boom boxes. Also i use them when i do repairs as well. Less of a shock. I just want to compare them to the better ones. It costs like 20 to 25 bucks (canadian dollars) for the 10 good ones or 5 bucks for 10 dollar store bats.

Do rechargable bats leak at all?? or has any one had leakage from them?

the only way to avoid battery leakage is to make sure you remove them after use, it,s a bit of messing about but it saves the terminals from that bad corrosion.
i think even if the box is mint but has corrosion it kind of ruins the box even though it,s not visible, it,s the knowing it,s there and it bugs me.

yeah when not in use i store my batteries in a diecast car carry case...

I use my boxes outside alot and Duracell's last the longest by far...only problem is the cost puts a big dent in your pocket. I by them 60 at a time off Amazon for about $60...

I'm from the Walkman aisle, so I only have one box. It's a cheap late 80's Magnavox you'd all hate, and uses six D cells. Runs a good 50-100 hours on them, so I've only changed the cells over about five times. I've fed it all sorts of Alkaline cells, without discontent. Right now, CVS $10 12-pack. But, it's a low-drain box that weighs maybe 6-8 pounds with cells and perhaps kicks out 1Wx2... upwind.

Whatever is on sale. But I make sure its a good brand like energizer duracell, radio shack, etc. For the chepies you get what you pay for and its not a long time befor they're dead.

Wow that is a question that I have to really think about a answer, I usually use Duracell, Energizer. Last time I used a unit outside was 1993 at the beach. My RC M90

I use Duracell D size batteries with some of my boomboxes often.

I use Ikea batteries...they're the cheapest !

for alkalines i use polaroid very cheap 1.99 a two pack...

With my 950F (8x D cell), as long as I'm jacking into the AUX input and not playing tape, the Panasonic and Sunbeam ones from the dollar store last a good 20-30 hrs at medium volume and the bass at 2 o'clock.

I also have a little Yorx box that takes 6 Cs, had batteries in it when I got it from the Goodwill, and they're still going.

i get mine for a quid (£1) for two at a time-panasonic batteries-good value-and they last-my audiosonic takes 8,so will be powering her up with cells soon, just as soon as i get the rust out of the battery box

Reptoid, 1.2 v.. Same as mine Novacell ones.. Great for 8, or 10 batteries box, but not working with 6 at all...............But i'm still happy with them.

While on the battery topic.....Last year there was a post on this site about a guy buying a 1981 Sony bbx, think it was the cfs-F5 NOS in the box and it came with packaged factory batteries. He put them in and they were still good - 29 year old batteries!

10,000mAh woah excellent !! bet they can go for a good while,and i bet you can thrash the box without them crapping out aswell..

i was thinking of getting my Suerjumbo J1..And fitting acouple of these

Fit one at each end of the box inside,then fit a charge socket on the back or the side of the box,so i can recherge them without having to strip it apart all the time,i chickened out though because i did'nt want to ruin the box..

I was running my sharp this weekend, for about 5 hours with cd plugged into the back, and i did not have it loud for most of the time and the sunbeams kept going the whole entire time. Those dollar store batteries surprised me. I thought they would crap out in an hour.

Rechargeable are cheapest if you use them regularly.

Energizer, Duracell, Panasonic, & Ray-O-Vac/Varta Alkaline all are about 2x-4x the life of regular batteries like Panasonic's Heavy Duty, National NEO, or Hyper or Eveready Heavy Duty "9".

It depends on how you use them and how deep cycled they are.

A flashlight left on is one test, but use them for peak cycles and the difference will increase a lot - up to 4x.

For digital cameras, Energizer Lithium and Panasonic's eVolta or Oxyride batteries will last longest. Not so much in other applications.

Eveready's Alkaline batteries are a pretty good deal and last long.

Ray-o-vac makes Radio Shack's batteries and owns Varta, who makes Ikea batteries.
Panasonic makes Kodak's batteries.

I have had best luck with Energizer/Eveready, National/Panasonic, and Duracell of the Alkalines.

Im surprised all of you dont use rechargeables? I have yet to buy some batteries but It will cost me around £12 for 8 rechargeable D batteries and then probably around £8 for the cheapest charger I can get... surely after just a few uses its well worth the money you will save? Will comment more when I try it out

One can save a lot of £ $ € if one buys and uses rechargeable!!! OH YEAH!

Mine, I use mainly with my altered bbox that has MiniDisc (no longer cassettes) and they lasts forever!
