Am i alone in my appreciation of what i think is the second golden age of boomboxes, from the late eighties to the early ninties. These so called eggs rarely get a mention in this hallowed forum. And yet they offer all the features of the earlier boomboxes, with the added bonus of a CD player.
Panasonic seemed to lead the way, with machines like RX-DT707 and 909, and the later cobra models, i haven't come across any 707's or the 909's in the UK, does anybody have one to comment on.
Here is my RX-DT55
dont like any of these types of boxes.....i avoid them like the plague
I have 3 dt707. They sound better than most golden age boomboxes...
im.out.of.hear - 2010-05-17 13:23
i dont have any eggs, but i have had them in the past, well a few years ago,i found them to sound quite good with nice bass ect..
But fave box's from that era (as most of you will know) are the Panasonic Dt680 and CT990,The bass they give out is mega..Top Quality Box's,Top bass, heavy, deep, mental bass, and top sound !!
680 is the only box that i would say is on the verge of being better than an m90.
Great box...
Don't forget about the JVC Kaboom.
I beleive it had the longest production run for any box.
But there is only one golden age.
and thats firmly set in the early 80's.
ye i agree with master z and most others here, sorry ade.
the egg boxes may sound good, well atleast some of them, but they just don,t have the look or the build quality of the early boxes.
no led,s or needles, no thanks.
that classic look of the early boxes was lost somewhere in the mid 80,s and it,s a crying shame.
but hey if you like em that,s your god given right, so what anyone else says does,nt really matter

I have most of the high end golden age boomboxes.
I can tell you for a fact the dt707 ranks as one of the best lav
well i respect your opinion boomer, but as a rule the dt707 is one of a few exceptions
in my opinion there was only ever one golden age of boxes and that,s firmly cemented in the first period of the great 80,s
I agree lav I have had a few eggs and the 707 is the cream of the cream.
I have the m90 777 1000 pioneer 909 well loads of boxes and the 707 is beutiful it has the best surround sound I have ever heard....
maybe so but i still would'nt touch one
sorry
i know that everyone here have their fav's ,
in my opinion these 2 are amazing machines,
by the way thanks Adespin for bringing these 2 up for review

Fair enough lad we all have our own personal prefs.
Hey guys calm down calm down, looks like we have very divided opinions
While i understand why most of this forum prefer the early eighties boxes, and so do i from a visual standpoint-sometimes i will get out my VZ2000 and just look at it for half an hour without playing it, my wife says she's going to get me sectioned
I can still appreciate the technical brilliance of a machine such as a Panasonic RX-DT75.

I Agree nothing better than a scrambled egg
but it's a shame you wont give one a go lav they sound much better than that phillips you highly recommend but its all good...
i'm off to bed, i'm up at 5.15 for work.
Personally, I don't see why eggs appeal to anybody, but to each their own...
hey don,t diss my d8614
it kills the panny in looks
and it sounds great, and it,s from 82 (the golden age) nuff said
anyway good topic ade

Nice one lad
sorry for going off topic ade
well i guess the boombox form took after the car form. from square to circular. who knows if they will be soon all forgotten about then become collectable again!!
I like the JVc Kaboom,I liike the big sonys too and I'd probably keep the Panasonic egg shown in the pic, but in general, eggs are a big Yolk to me, and omlet you all know, Idont care to scramble about collecting them.
EEEEK! Squash the big bug before it gets to the children!
Ok, so they have a CD player. Am I the only one on Earth that thinks that the CD is the worst portable format of all time? I don't know about you, but taking a very fragile (and relatively big) $15+ disc with me while I'm walking down the street just seemed like a bad idea. That's what tapes were for.
I had a JVC Kaboom years ago, and it was great for the house. But, isn't that what a stereo is for? Put some batteries in it and it's not so great. I'd even put my old GE Blockbuster up against it. Seriously.
Besides, It's like lugging around a bazooka.
I haven't had my hands on many of the old ones yet as I'm kind of new at all of this. Or maybe new for the second time. But there's just something about the older ones that I find to be far more appealing than the later stuff.
I'll even go so far as to say that I think there was a great decline in stereo equipment in general starting around 85 or 86.
well this seems to be like Marmite
some love and some hate
i think they hold a place on here
it's like the bmx scene for me
80's and then the 90's - every one wants a 80 bmx but if you look you can find a sweet 90's bmx that is just as good
as for if you like or not ? well if you don't - why diss those who do ? aren't we all here for the love of a box ? - does it matter that we don't have all the same taste and isn't that what makes us a great bunch of members to be here in the first place
be cool love all - play nicely or i will brake your knobs off
cheers B
everyone loves something, and if your preference is for these later models-so be it-good for you.there were a couple of good boxes made in this period, but its not really my era

i couldnt have said it better my self!! thanks Bendycat,, all i have to say here for those with monolithic is that way before all of you guys came here, there was a member here called 8 TRACK, he loved his 8 track cassettes and boomboxes, no one here ever talk bad about him or his prefference instead we used to let him know when 8 track boomboxes poped up on ebay or if we found one of them on a yard sale or a swapmeet for 8, 10 dollars and he will gladly get it from us because he loved them, many of the pioneers here like AGENTORANGE, LITFAN, GETTOMAN,MATRIXAMBIENCE, NED209, PANASONIC FAN, RAMBO ESTRADA, AND many others, we never diss anybodys likings or made fun of it, so guys please like the old saying goes, if you have nothing good to say about it dont say anything, hope you guys dont take it too personal, just trying to keep the game clean.
well if anyones took me the wrong way i do appologise
sometimes my sense of humour can land me in trouble
i do respect everybody,s preference and like many people have quoted each to their own.
sometimes people should,nt take things personally and look at the funny side instead, gee if we did,nt laugh once in a while what,s the point??
yup, that's the best way:
If you've got a positive contribution, pipe-up & if you don't, let your silence speak volumes
Personally, I agree that there was a "second golden age".
By the late 80s & early 90s, the major manufactureres had all progressed beyond the "bung it all in a big box" approach & proper acoustic design was being carried out, along with progress in speaker design. I'm sure the advent of Computer Aided Design played a big part in this.
For example, my Panasonic RX-DT610 has just two 4-5" drivers, but the volume, sound quality & bass output makes you thing "small home system" rather than boombox.
Sure, there was plenty of cheap, grim tat about in the 90s (as there also was in the early 80s), but the top of the line stuff was still excellent.
Those Panasonic RX-DTs in Drip's post are a perfect example. Sound quality from these is truly exceptional for any portable & feature count was also very good.
The change in looks in the 90s was nothing more than
fashion. It was the first time possible to have swoopy lines all over the place (again due to computers), so they went mad with it, to look unique, new, etc. whether they needed to or not.
I too wish they would bung the innards from a Kaboom in a "classic" looking boomer - perfectly possible, but most unlikely
Here's an example of the changing fashion of boombox looks. A "missing link" between old & new perhaps:
Here, JVC hadn't yet abandoned the ruler, but the all-black, purposeful & menacing look was there.
Selling a boomer with a great new feature was still alive - this was amongst the very first of their "Hyper-Bass" boomers. Oh, & it actually worked too.
Also the dreaded cutbacks on features hadn't happened yet either with this one. We're talking Dolby, auto-reverse, 5 band EQ, 4 band tuner with SW fine-tune, Mic input, proper aux-in. Oh, & say it quietly...
a CD player
you can,t compare that with the early stuff surely, all i can say is what went wrong there??

hahahahaha
NOW THATS FUNNY
How about this one?
very nice dt, come on guys have a pop at me now
check this one out: this is from a chinese seller.
now that,s a looker "wow" i think i may have just been converted
Sorry, just havin' a little fun, folks. Didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade.
To be fair about it Fisher had a few really good ones in the late 80s and early 90s. I think they were trying to get back to their higher end roots. Their boxes were more like portable shelf systems than "boomboxes", but they had a nice sound.
I don't see what I said as a big deal 'cause NOBODY got dissed from what I can tell.
There were no personal attacks, but if anybody felt that they got dissed personally, they need to grow a thicker skin and learn how to handle constructive criticism.
And if anybody here can point out where I or anybody else in this thread supposedly dissed somebody - ANYBODY, quote it and post it.
It's like how some people don't like Lasonic and other big black empty boxes... There isn't ANYTHING that serious that the next man (or woman) can say about a box that could make me feel as if they're talking smack about me on a personal level. I've got better things to do with my time than to be sweatin' small things like that.
For example, there's a BIG (and rather obvious) difference between saying that, "Your egg sucks" and "You suck".
Again, TO EACH THEIR OWN!

Hi its all down to taste but theres no getting away from the fact that the higher end eggs are well built ,packed with features and sound great. All said and done I usually leave them alone but may now have a second look thanks to Adespin.
Dont mind these 3 piece boxes though
Its a Aiwa ca-dw550k in mint condition and including remote This beast takes 12 batteries including the backups and sounds fantastic.
wow man, now that looks more like a home stereo but portable since it uses batts, tho it looks pretty well built, from a very well known brand.

I agree with you Dave!!!
When CDs were placed in Boxes it killed the whole thing!!! Unless the Box had some sort of anti-shock feature, the CD would skip like crazy while walking down the street!!! (Quite Embaressing
)
There nothing like
THE GOLDEN AGEof Boxes from 1978-1985, when they started from twin 3' speakers, to the Samsonite Suitcases with 10' woofers!!! Nothing like poppin' in a Cassette, and walking down the street with your favorite sounds on!!! YUM!!!
