Telefunken Studio 1 Arrived partly busted

dandhsun - 2010-06-09 22:49

Hi this is my first post. The studio 1 I purchases from ebay Germany had the following problems due to not-so-good packaging:
1) Vu meter fallen inside,
2)no lights for Vu meter and tuning,
3) Cassette player operation cannot stay put, meaning it cannot play/rew/ff unless you press it manually and constantly
4) The left channel goes off intermittently and this only happens in radio mode.

I hope no.2-4 could be solved by changing the light bulbs,ie.led replacement? And problem no.3 is it related to the spring issues?

Thanks a lot.

Rgds,

Daniel

Don't know this model at all, but instinctively I'd hazard the following guesses..

1. Re-insert the VU meter into it's rightful place, perhaps with a small touch of glue.

2. I imagine natural failure of the lamps, or the lamps have fallen out and are hanging loose somewhere, still functioning.

3. There's usually a latching bar that is spring loaded on (many) cassette mechs, it's likely that the return spring has become detached. Or worse case, lost.

4. This may be as simple as spraying some switch cleaner fluid in the function selector switch. Or it may be a dry joint or crack in the tuner board somewhere, or a loose multipin plug/socket.

Good luck, there are people on this board far better placed to comment on this model than I am, but hey, it's a start Smile

Number 3 is probably broken axis holder.
It's nothing serious, I have already fixed it on mine S1.

broken right holder

temporary solution

also, number 1 it's piece of cake, don't worry you will fixed that easy.

BTW, congrats Daniel on that score and welcome in the Studio 1 club, that is the one of the best sounding boomboxes and you will enjoy listening to music Nod Yes

IMPORTANT, THERE IS A SECRET SCREW, on the deck section, position is under REW and STOP commands:

Thank you all for the replies, I am glad I asked saving me lots of trouble in locating the problem. I am quite astonished at the sound quality of the studio 1, which is quite comparable to my existing Hi-Fi System that is at least 10X its value. However booming occurs when you adjusted the bass past 3'O clock and I have to lower it to avoid any damage to the woofer, afterall it is more than 30 years old.

Daniel

hi there danny, sorry to hear about the nasty damage on your purchase Nod Yes people should either pack there boxes properly or give a proper description of the item before selling, to save all the heartache and trouble.
anyway hope you get it sorted Wink

I believe devol-toni is correct. I just fixed mine. The knobs all sit on a chassis (for the lack of a better word)and that has disconnected from the rest of the radio probably due to it being cracked or broken. Try fiberglass to fix it. Good luck. The best sounding ghetto blaster by far.

dandhsun - 2010-06-10 18:01

Thanks lav loo, I sent my seller the news and guess ehat, no reply and hopefully I'll be able to restore it but what a pity as the condition was mint when the item was posted.

Yes, ghettolife, I believe I found the broken plastic right after I opened up the box, I think it is one of the most fragile parts. I will post more pictures as I've discovered 2 loose wires near the ferrite antenna and don't know what to do about it, probably attached to one end of the antenna as I see the other end has wired attached as well.

Thank you all and you've been very helpful.

Rgds,

Daniel

Hi I am back and my friend who is technically knowledgeable were able to fix all of the problems mentioned except for the lights which are clearly busted. Could anyone share some light on the model and make of the light bulb which my friend told me is 12V, where can I purchase them ie. online?

lav.loo - 2010-07-11 10:35

hi there danny, im sorry i can,t help you with the bulb you need as i have absolutely no knowledge of that box, i just wanted to post to say congrats on getting the other problems sorted.
i love to hear success stories Wink

Good box.... Big bummer it got to you semi-broken!

Frown

dandhsun - 2010-07-11 23:57

Thanks to all your replies. Watching my friend fixing it is partly fun as you explore the inner makings of this box. It turned out that some of the bulbs were disconnected intentionally, some knobs, like the recording level which have 2 overlapping ones are stuck together,i.e. could not be turned independently and it was found that the knobs were over-tightened. As for the cassette, thankfully nothing is broken but the metal plates used to hold the positions needs some lubrication, actually most of the switches and knobs needs some contact cleaner sprayed. An interesting thing is the Vu meters, the left and right were not exactly equal at rest and after some adjustment they were leveled and it returned to the previous "unbalanced" positions over an hour of playback, the tuning vu meter needed some exercise and lubrication to fully spring to the right.
The remaining task is replacing the lights and I've seen someone in the forum replaced them with leds with success.

Cheers,

Daniel

So, you are almost good to go!!!!

Cool

devoltoni - 2010-07-12 02:20

The miniature bulbs are with a value of 15V/120mA

yes i will!!

lasonic.trc920 - 2010-07-12 17:56

I've never seen one of these in person either would like to hear one one day!

dandhsun - 2010-07-13 00:07

Thanks Devol-toni.The info is very useful.

I don't have other boombox to compare but I believe it sounds wonderful, quite comparable to my hi-fi system which comprised of Linn IKEMI/Nakamichi Dragon as source, simaudio moon i-5 integrated amp and Proac Tablet 2000 Signature.
