Best Constructed Box!!

lav.loo - 2010-07-21 15:07

here,s another little topic guys just to keep things rollin Big Grin
i just thought that different opinions on the best made box would be a good thread, i may be wrong but ile start.
ok iv,e owned a lot of boxes over the 5 yrs iv,e been collecting, maybe about 60/70 Nod Yes i have nowhere near that many now for different reasons, so judging by the amount iv,e had it would be fare to say iv,e handled the best and worst of them.
this thread is about the build quality of different models which sometimes gets left out in favour of sound quality and looks Nod Yes
im gonna say out of all the boxes iv,e had, for excellent build quality i am going to go with a pioneer sk909L, which i had a while back, it really is built like a battle tank and weighs an absolute ton for a mid size box Nod Yes i will also give the panasonic 5500 and 5600 a top spot too as their build quality is excellent also.
so there you have it my opinion on the best built box iv,e had, the pioneer sk909L, i was gonna give the super jumbo a shout aswell but i just watched my 3 year old daughter carry it across the room Laugh Out Loud
any offerings here would be great, cheers guys Wink

members like Gman and stormin normin -
who have worked on almost every popular box-
will have the most accurate input -

my old sony #580 from the 70s might be my own
most solid box

Im not sure what the best constructed box is lav... but for a grail the m90 ranks high with me... belts can be done in 5mins and when you totally strip one down every connector has it's place so you dont even need a manual unlike some boxes like the conion c100f....

Panasonic RX-5500! Hands down! Rock solid!

retro - 2010-07-21 18:40

JVC PC-55, it's built like a tank.

i thought this box would defo get a few mentions here Nod Yes

master.z - 2010-07-22 10:03

The JVC PC-11 and RC-838 are both built like brick sh!t houses!

reli - 2010-07-22 10:24

Eh, I have one of those RC-838s, and I'm gonna have to disagree, the plastic switches are rather cheap and fragile, and the sliders often break internally and stop working. It does have one of the best tuners though.

lav.loo - 2010-07-22 10:53

i can,t comment on the two jvc,s you,ve listed MZ cos iv,e never had one, i have had an m70 an that was a solid unit, but looking at the pics you,ve put up they do look strong boxes Nod Yes although RELI disagrees on the 838, like me he rates the panny 5500 so comparing another box to the 5500 would be very difficult cos it,s made so well with proper metal switches Wink

reli - 2010-07-22 11:12

The volume slider on the 838 is awesome, it's got ball bearing detents, but the rest of the sliders are plastic and they have a carbon eletrical contact inside that often breaks down and stops working. You can't just spray Deoxit on them to make them work again.

lav.loo - 2010-07-22 11:27

ah i see, seems like it,s the only thing that lets that box down though, it does look a real sturdy box but i would,nt of thought it rated up their with the sk909L and the 5500 Wink

miami - 2010-07-22 12:01

I'm far from being an expert, but my Sharp GF-9494 it's a brick !

The 838 has the most sensitive tuner with the best reception of any box I've tried so far. I have picked up Chinese shortwave stations.

lav.loo - 2010-07-22 12:41

I Agree MIAMI, most of the gf range are built like tanks, iv,e had lots of gf,s including 9090/9191/9797/575/9000/777/ just to name a few, never had the 9494 but i have held one and i remember it being a very solid unit Nod Yes i may be wrong here but, i think the mid size boxes are better made than the big ones, example being, i think the 9090 is more solid than the 777, i think the bigger the box the lesser the quality, but i bet there,s gonna be a few who disagree Nod Yes
anyway the 9494, nice choice Wink

I have to agree, I just got one of these RC-838's and it weighs a ton! I haven't even put batteries in it yet and I would have to say, I won't be hoisting it up to my shoulder anytime soon!

oldskool69 - 2010-07-31 19:38

Telefunken Hifi Studio
Sanyo C7 & C9
Hitachi TRK-8180 & 8290

Big Grin

mellymelsr - 2010-08-01 02:52

The build quality and components in the Sanyo 920 are second to none. The M90 and M70 rate high as well for 1 piece boxes. Of my multi piece boxes my Sony FH7 has home stereo level quality...it's unfair to compare it to other boomboxes.

lav.loo - 2010-08-01 02:53

oooh OLDSKOOL69, id have to question the hitachi 8290 as one of the best built boxes.
after owning one of these i find the sliders a bit dodgy and if you twiddle about with the tweeters they move around, i have an 8200 and it,s a lot more solid than the 8290 Nod Yes Wink

i totally agree with you on the 920 MELLY, quality all round, probably the best box i have, and probably the best iv,e ever had Wink

cman750 - 2010-08-05 10:30

This is a hard one, my PC-55 is solid as well as my M70 and M90 not to mention the RC 550 ...all made to last proof in the pudding for the age of them .

lav.loo - 2010-08-06 02:11

a lot of people seem to agree on the jvc,s, and although im not a jvc fan really, after having the m70/m80 i gotta agree Nod Yes

teamstress - 2010-08-06 17:25

What I have noticed when working on my boxes is the different manufacturing methods employed. For example, the Realistic SCR-6 versus the SCR-8. Brand new the 6 cost more than the 8, even though the 8 is bigger and sounds better. Inside however the 6 is more complicated with individual circuit boards attached in separate areas to a main "central chassis", making assembly more time consuming. The 8 has most of its elecs on one board making assembly quicker and reducing the price but not really reducing the "quality".

l.lopez - 2010-08-06 19:17

SmileI have to say from my collection is got to be the Sanyo M-9998K it is built tough. As a 3 peace boombox I have to go with the Sanyo C9 is another built tough boombox.

drew - 2010-08-17 09:04

I say Redbenjoe has is right when mentioning the Sony CF-580 from 1976. Materials and construction are insanely solid....a smaller to medium size boombox, the 580 weighs 18 lbs. w/ batteries !

If you drop it on your foot....the foot will break, not the box.

MY article on these - http://www.antiqueradio.com/De...ayden_SonyCF580.html

reli - 2010-08-17 10:33

I believe the RX-7700 is also a very well constructed box......Real metal chassis, very heavy.

litfan - 2010-08-17 14:11

Well, i have got to chip in, and say grundig. The C9000, and, most of the RR range, are superbly made, with lot`s of preh parts, hard wiring, etc.
