retro - 2010-07-27 17:32

Wow, that's a really cool design. I wonder if it takes batteries with that LED display. Ghettoman, I'll try... I Agree

reli - 2010-07-27 17:40

Nice LED's, but horrible how they try to make the speakers look bigger than they really are.........Reminds me of the Sanyo C4

Damn I want to buy one of these but yet again I'm kicked in the patoot by lack of international postage

Looking at that thing would I be wrong in thinking that box could be modded to fit bigger speakers? Mind you, I know nothing about the guts of boxes

blaster - 2010-07-27 22:56

wow thats awesome...looks like the i931 got some competition...looks solid.. i like it...even has sd card slot and takes batteries...only thing doesnt have a track readout screen like the lasonic has...in anycase this may be a start of more future new old school boxes to come... Smile

viennasound - 2010-07-27 23:11

oldskool midsize boomer with modern technology.
Cooool! Cool

lav.loo - 2010-07-28 01:11

I agree.. it just looks cheap and nasty....

im.out.of.hear - 2010-07-28 04:54

i agree with both of you,but the bit i like is, (although looks abit cheapo) still has that old skool look to it,nice square edges, flashy led's ect..actually seeing a company making an effort...they have got the right idea, there going back to the old skool & that can only be a good thing Smile

What i'de like to see is that box selling millions, that might encourage other company's to join in,then they'll start trying to out do eachother by making bigger and better boxes..

reminds me of the Kaboom;]

isolator42 - 2010-07-28 05:48

oooh...

This sort of thing always divides opinion... I love it, I hate it, etc. All good stuff for s2g Smile

IMHO, this iPhone boomer is A Good Thing.

Realistically, we're most unlikely to ever see top brands having a multi-million dollar punt at producing a top quality bit of boomer kit in the hope of actually making a profit.
So it then falls to lesser brands to have a bash, & this is what we get.

OK, let me see...

I'm a fully paid up memeber of the "I hate small speakers behind big grilles" fraternity. However, I think they've done a passable job at disguising those smaller woofers. Remember, todays speaker technology means they probably produce more & better bass than 8-inchers from the 80s. What are they in there? 4"-5" ?
I also like the radio record function - a bit of fun.
No remote. Shame.
It's dimensions make it a small-ish "mid-size". Useful (I think the Lasonic i931 is a bit on the big size for camping, etc.)
It's rated at 2x5W (10% THD) so it's output is OK, but nothing special.
The spec says it requires 8 D-cells "for backup" ? Nah. the manual shows 2 AAAs for backup, so those 8 Ds are for proper portability... it's a "real" boomer... yay Smile

If you want yr own PDF copy of the manual, it's here:

viennasound - 2010-07-28 06:35

I Agree with iso

I doubt the amount of bass per square inch has improved over the years. Unless it has an acoustical enclosure like a Bose Wave........which it doesn't, it's just a cheap $99 box. Laugh Out Loud

As far as the Record feature, I would ask, what is the compression ratio, and are you really getting a quality recording?

In my opinion this box is a bad thing, because it lowers the value and novelty of OUR boxes.

jovie - 2010-07-28 07:39

Speakers remind me of this old school box,the JVC rc-880:

I can't see how this can be a bad thing. There's always something negative someone can find about anything. That kind of scrutiny is valuable so long as its kept in perspective.

I'm going to investigate myself.Hopefully,it will sound better than your average cheap ipod docking station. The analog tuner definitely sets right with me. Smile

blaster - 2010-07-28 08:06

I agree it has some nice features....

not much danger of that, true enough Smile

As for the speakers...
- Speaker efficiency has improved = louder
- Today's materials mean a smaller speaker can have a longer stroke to push more air = more bass
- Properly applied knowledge of Q-values, etc. means getting good sound quality has less of the "bung-em-in-a-plastic-box-&-hope" method.
(anyone interested... have a quick read of this:
http://web.media.mit.edu/~meye...ers/loudspeakers.pdf )

Of course, all that said, they could've just chucked the cheapest drive-units they could find in the box anyway... Smile

I too would like more info on the recording.
mp3 files? bit rate? etc. Also, when you've put yr iPhone or iPod in there, can you control it beyond track skip? Doesn't look like it.

Well, there's one sure way to find out. Who's gonna buy one then? (I'm out unless it's on sale in the UK)

reli - 2010-07-28 10:04

I just don't think it's fair that people will be able to buy these things and act like they know anything about boomboxes. They haven't earned the right. Furthermore, people won't appreciate the old boxes as much. Someone will see you on the street with your old Sharp and they'll say "that's nothing special, my buddy has one just like it" (when it's really just one of these ipod crap-boxes).

lav.loo - 2010-07-28 10:23

i totally agree with you here RELI Nod Yes also no matter what components or materials they use, the craftmanship just is,nt there anymore No No can you imagine one of them crappy things still playing music in another 30 yrs Laugh Out Loud i think not No No another thing it would,nt matter which manufacturer followed suit here, sharp, pioneer, sanyo, to mention a few, because these big names don,t even make quality products like they used to.
everything is about money these days, quality is non existant, also it would,nt mean anything in terms of nostalgia, classic boxes are from a classic era, the GR80,S Wink

reli - 2010-07-28 11:14

If it was a Panasonic you can guarantee it would last.....But who is "Innovative Technology"? What else do they make, toasters?

master.z - 2010-07-28 12:03

I went to take a look at it today.
It's alot smaller than you would think. and its construction isnt that good. the case feels sturdy, but the controls are very shaby. Its very light as well. The speakers are 3" max.
Unfortunatly I wasnt able to plug it in, there were no outlets where they had this displayed. the people that worked there were staring at me wondering why the hell I was taking it out of the box.
The cool thing about it is that you can digitally record off mp3 players and FM radio. and save it to a SD card. but thats about it. save your hundred bucks and use it towards an Altec Lansing or Kaboom.

Reli, there is no comparison with this and a classic boombox. Like lav said, I'd be suprised if this thing lasts 3 years, let alone 30 like most classic era boxes!

blaster - 2010-07-28 12:17

kinda reminds me a bit of the MTX ipod box the size range of it maybe a bit larger...and with more features...i might get it though...when funds allow...but thanks for sharing Z...

samsnite - 2010-07-28 12:45

Yeea the look is coming back!!!

I agree with you paul.... howeaver cassette is gone so none of the new boomboxes for me....

enskanker - 2010-07-28 13:26

This is crapola in a square shape...

You can get it for free in the smallest room in your house, different shape.

lav.loo - 2010-07-28 14:09

nice 1 MZ, thanks for giving us some info on the box, you,ve just confirmed my suspicions Wink

transwave5000 - 2010-07-28 18:48

I think theres enough room to put a walkman in there
and with the power bar meters going might be quite good.

Ill wait for the half/price sale. Smile

Here is more from the same company.

the.bunyip - 2010-07-29 00:10

Which site did you find those on, transwave?

3" speakers? ooh, shame.
I kow I was banging on about new speaker technology, but now I'm thinking they buuilt this thing down to a profit-making price.
Pity about the shabby build quality too, but almost to be expected, really. As you say it's not exactly Panasonic (etc.) is it?

Ah well, it's still better than many grim iPod docks out there, but I'll also be interested when the close-out prices of $50 or less come along...
