Sharp is still making boxes

retro - 2010-08-09 17:45

I spotted this sharp on the way home from work today. I know it looks cheap, but what caught my attention was the size. If you compare the tape wells and the CD to the length of the box, you can see that it's pretty big.

its not bad...love the logo on the handle... Cool

retro - 2010-08-09 18:16

It's a Sharp GX-CD5100W, measures 30" in width and has an rms output of 12.5 watts per channel.

reli - 2010-08-10 03:39

If it's only 12.5 rms, there's no way it could peak at 400w as claimed by the sticker. Especially not in those cheap plastic housings.

it looks more like a shelf mini stereo.

I Agree a hifi not a box No No
why do they even bother trying to make a box these days when they turn out looking like that contraption?? Big Grin

I say let the revival and the competition begin!!! Woo Hoo!!

Now if only Panasonic would bring out the bigger badder sucessor to the their legendary dt680!!

Exactly!! Laugh Out Loud If they're making boomboxes, they should at least make them look like a proper box we love, not a midi shelf system!

panabox - 2010-08-10 14:34

Wait a minute...Is this a detatacable 1 piece unit or 3 seperate components (like a minisystem)? I thought it was a boombox, a configurable 1 piecer. Was I wrong?

lav.loo - 2010-08-10 14:42

not sure what it is PANABOX?? but it certainly does nothing for my eyes No No Wink

retro - 2010-08-10 14:45

It's a 3 piece and runs on 10 d cells.

Ahh just spotted this..for the price it cost sharp to make that, they could make a GF777,have you seen whats in a 777 ? one long circuit board,2 cassettes and 4 speakers,it would'nt cost them that much to make one..i mean, have you seen what they do with L.c.d tv's these days ? when one gets a fault, they find which board is faulty, they rip the faulty circuit board out and put a new one in,thats how cheaply they make boards now..

Ah but the GF-777 is a monster of a box, there must be a lot of stuff in it, the thing weighs 12 kilos. I wouldn't think that 3 piece crap thing weighs much over half that! Big Grin No No

im.out.of.hear - 2010-08-10 15:17

RA,i think the 777s heavy because there is alot of plastic, and a couple of metal bars inside, psu is slightly heavy-ish,but as for innards, theres not that much in a 777,one main board, and a tiny board for the echo, one smallish board for the amp,but nothing major..i'm sure they could make one for quite cheap cash..

panabox - 2010-08-10 21:40

Please don't throw tomatos guys but I kind of like the look. Although it does have a bit too much Jedi going on. I've always liked the 90's black/charcoal 3piece boxes. There's a certain professional elegance about them. Iliked Panasonic's eggs too. Could you imagine a dt75 being this size of the sharp? That would be nice expecially if it had the monster sound to back it up!

reli - 2010-08-11 11:58

I like the subwoofer tubes and ports on modern boxes, but I don't like how the tape doors are 6 inches thick. That's a waste of space in my opinion. Similar to how a lot of American trucks and muscle cars have tons of wasted space under the hood.

Sadly not like they used to Frown

I Agree Their heart's in the right place... Where their head is, I think some of us know. Wink Big Grin

Personally, I'm not a big fan of these angular (or sometimes organic) wannabe futuristic designs.

bredgeo - 2010-08-27 10:54

It would have been so much nicer if it had the appellation of "GF 9393" and was a little more boxy!

They never made a 9393.... WHY?

ao - 2010-08-28 12:40

Seriously guys, have you ever seen inside a 777, you'd be very dissapointed, there's no extra plastic, no baffles or folded horns, Paul's right, you just have a very plasticky double cassette movement fastened to a very fragile circuit board. The weight is the speakers.
