Looking for a big system with good quality sound

city.hunter - 2010-09-02 13:05

I'm looking for a early 80s box. I like them big, but I'm also particular about the sound quality. I listen to a lot of classic rock metal and weird ranom stuff. I'm just looking for a few suggestions. I'm not really looking to start a collection.. at least yet. I just want a nice sound higher powered box.

Thanks,
Shaun

I don't know how high up the boombox chain you want to go but I can offer a few of my favorite big boxes. These are listed in order of my personal preference.

JVC RC-M90-this is on everyones top one piece box list. It is the top dog for sound quality and is loud as hell. Better have deep pockets if you want one. (check my avatar)

Conion C100F-this box is also legendary. Killer looks and decent sound quality and very loud. Need deep pockets for this one too.

Here are a couple that have good sound quality, won't kill your wallet and are fairly easy to come by...

JVC RC-M70-this is the king of the medium-sized boxes. Excellent sound quality and the volume crushes all boxes it's size and most larger boxes as well. Very easy to find on ebay.

Prosonic PRQ 9962-commonly refered to as a poor man's M90. Excellent sound quality and thumping bass. definitely a sleeper that won't kill your wallet.

The quality of the box you get will only be limited by what you are willing to spend. Like anything else quality will cost you. But if you are patient and willing to look there are good deals to be found. Good luck with your search.

davebush - 2010-09-02 13:51

if your not looking for something with batteries and its just to play at home theres only one system you should be looking at....a sony fh-7.............the end

lav.loo - 2010-09-02 15:23

i would say a philips d8614, this box has it all, goodf looks unbelievable sound quality and can be picked up quiet cheap lets say between £40/£90 on epay.
failing that the LASONIC TRC 931, not the best built box, but the bass will blow you away it really does kick Nod Yes

reli - 2010-09-02 18:56

Telefunken Studio 1 if you really want the best sound quality. But then you're talking a 3-piece box instead of 1.

davebush - 2010-09-03 00:29

lav.....been playing that reel to reel through it........real nice Wink.....back to topic......yeah telefunken good solid sound.....quality box....not played with mine for a while

Really really really love the big philips with the double deck!!!
Gotta get me one of them!!

city.hunter - 2010-09-05 00:52

THanks for the replies. I figure around 400 tops for a box. I dont really want a multi piece. I'll probably end up using it on the turbine deck and camping quite a bit.

I do love the conion but if I can get something that sounds better then im down. They seems to be going for quite a bit omre than these use to.

Not votes on the 777 eh? lol

docs - 2010-09-05 04:57

The 777 is a great box, in fact its superb. But its not as mobile as other boxes of similar quality. I think you have to ask yourself what you like and what you dont. That way you can spend the money on something that is up your street and the sound quality will be secondary, though no doubt great anyway. To me I prefer the looks over sound any day, otherwise I'd have a load of crappy looking egg boxes Big Grin But it is important to try and find a mid point and there are literally hundreds of boxes that fit that bill.

matrixambience - 2010-09-05 10:31

JVC RC-M70.

brigadier.vytas - 2010-09-05 12:56

i own only one big size bbx, it's a GoldStar TSR 800 (same as Prosonic PQR9962(?), also there was Unitech version).

Not very rear and, i guess, usualy, not very expencive. I live in Lithunia and i know 3 other guys from our local page (we have about 20 regular posters there), who have same model.
Pretty simple inside, but heavy (9kg). Maybe names like Goldstar are not so fancy, like Sharp or JVC are (and this is Korea made), but this box is very classic looking and sound is very nice. Lots of functions, line in sockets, eats 10 "D" size batteries.

reli - 2010-09-05 14:13

The 777 is dime a dozen, go on Ebay any day of the week and you'll see 20 of them. Get something more unique.

matrixambience - 2010-09-06 05:07

......and something better looking. Wink

oldskool69 - 2010-09-06 17:05

If you want a Hi-Fi, high powered box you may want to consider a component set. You are more likely to find what you are looking for. See my avatar for what I mean.

That is a top tier one but there are some good midlines that sound very good. Smile

city.hunter - 2010-09-11 03:52

I want somethign that rocks. I think good sound is important, but looks are always a plus. I'm buying it to use, not show off. I kinda like the look of the 777, but I'm donw for just about anything.

So what systems out there have proximity alarms? Smile

panabox - 2010-09-15 05:41

i reccomend Panasonic's rx-dt680. Good professional sound, plus DEEP bass. The best box I've heard so far. Although I haven't heard the Lasonic -trc931 or the others yet.

peter.griffin - 2010-09-15 07:21

Hey Hunter, if your taking it camping. You want something fairly "mobile". The M70 would be perfect for you. Not too heavy. Loud enough for the outdoors, amazing sound, especially for Rock. Great reception if you listen to FM. And it lasts forever on batteries as long as you don't use the tapedeck.

matrixambience - 2010-09-15 08:07

I agree with PG!!! The M70 is the superb box for everything!

mellymelsr - 2010-09-15 20:26

M70, M70, M70...I like them so much I have 5...medium sized box with big box sound and volume. My favorite box..period.

lav.loo - 2010-09-16 09:12

...I know there are several boxes that sound better than the M70...but it is a great all around box. If he wants the BEST one piece box the M90 is the best choice. M70's are much easier to get. I have not had the chance to hear the Philips but I am looking forward to one day hearing one.

lav.loo - 2010-09-16 16:25

the philips does,nt have the power of the m90 No No and maybe not built as good as the jvc,s, but it has a sound which is hard to match in terms of quality, iv,e got to say though the m70 i once heard was in a bit of a sorry state, i would love to hear one in better condition Nod Yes Wink

Eek really??
Here it´s no problem to get that PHILIPS.
But impossible to get a M70 Frown
Really would love that box.

matrixambience - 2010-09-17 07:53

Sorry to say all philips knows how to make are light bulbs......

lav.loo - 2010-09-17 09:04

sorry to say, but you obviously have no idea what your talkin about, so it maybe better not to speak atall if you have nothing nice to say Nod Yes

docs - 2010-09-17 09:25

Well my first phillips has superb sound quality for the size and the deck mechanism is excellent with its 3 motor system. So I can guarantee that they are better than just plain bulbs.

In the US Philips boomboxes are VERY rare. I have seen maybe 1 or 2 for sale ever on Ebay. I don't know many collectors who even have one. I think Magnavox are a lot more common here.

matrixambience - 2010-09-17 17:16

Its true Lav!! Philips makes a mean light bulb, oh and I have a few 45 RPM records (with the big hole thank you very much!)..made by Philips from the 60's and 70's, and they sound good, but they cannot make a boombox. I have heard them, and the quality is just not there. Oh yeah...and my opinion counts just like yours, so fair is fair. PM me if you need to vent and we'll settle it there! Thanks!!!

mellymelsr - 2010-09-18 03:27

I must say that I don't think it is a coincidence that the M70 sits alone as the top medium sized box on the planet just like the M90 sits on top as the best large boombox...but I am a little biased...I love JVC's... Big Grin

that sounds like an offer i can,t refuse Big Grin
unfortunately iv,e got better things to do with my time than rage at someone through pm,s, are you that lonely an sad that you need to see your pm box flash for a bit of company Big Grin

matrixambience - 2010-09-18 08:02

Sounds like a narcissitic comment with meaningless dribble comin' from across "the pond", so happy collecting!!

lav.loo - 2010-09-18 08:13

take it however you want, im a guy who does,nt really give a s**t what anyone thinks, you don,t know me so just don,t speak to me, end of!!

If anybody has a M70 for trade, please let me know. Have some interesting PHILIPS... Smile

reli - 2010-09-18 11:58

Can we all just admit that anything we say is just opinion, and there is no such thing as "the generally accepted top midsize box"

There are a group of boxes that most people say have superior sound, but none have been scientifically proven best, nor has anyone collected an official vote across boombox collectors.

It would be an interesting experiment to collect votes, but nobody should be allowed to vote on a box unless they have personally owned one.

docs - 2010-09-18 12:00

Indeed, we all love different things, which is a good job to be honest. For eg. my favourite mid sizer was the Crown 950 until today when the Tosh s932 arrived and took over, and that is how these things work.

mellymelsr - 2010-09-18 18:37

Any opinions I offer up are based on my own personal experience and they are only opinions. I thought that is what this site is about. Offering opinions and then discussing them. I love all boomboxes (except for eggs) but only collect the ones whos sound I like. It seems that there are too many on this site who get all butt hurt over someones opinion. I love boomers and will continue to offer an informed opinion on boxes I have heard and I will continue to have a curiousity about those I have not heard. Anyone who finds my opinions disrespectful, they are not meant to be that way and please grow some thicker skin and move on....PEACE
