fave box review!!

lav.loo - 2010-10-12 03:30

ok guys, this thread was suggested by member MELLY, it's a thread requesting a review of your fave box, so im gonna start by posting first, obviously it's my PHILIPS D8614, a pic of the box with your review would be great, so here goes Bopping
the d8614 is a very nice looking box, it is medium sized and quiet heavy, but not too heavy Big Grin
it has tons of functions, seperate bass/treble controls, loudness function, and the very nice sound addition which is the spatial stereo, whack this up and the stereo sound is superior to any iv'e ever heard.
the d8614 goes very loud and has excellent sound quality, iv'e struggled to find a box that matches it, especially for clarity, bass is also very good at all levels of sound.
the twin led's are also a nice feature which are 7 segment green, and 3 segment red.
the recording capabilities of this box are also fantastic, with a quality tape deck mechanism.
it also has the very desirable blue woofers too,
this is no common japanese box No No it's a more rare box which was made in austria, which to me makes it that bit more special.
im not saying it's the best box ever made No No but to me it is irreplaceable.
i want more d8614's Big Grin
so there you have it my all time fave box, which is also my first treasured find, come on guys, let's see yours Bopping

In 1981 I bought a Crown CSC 656, I cherished that box for many years and recall clearly the great songs it introduced me to. In 1996, still imaculate I skipped it (to my great shame) in favour of a new CD box as the world had moved on, but it was never the same, and I pined for something about that old Crown.

The 656 was I suppose a transition box as the manufacturer added strange items (like the LED clock), it had twin VUs, but only reflected the output on one and the voltage power on the other, it had mixing facilities which i never understood properly (or used) and it didnt have the classic box looks, but to me it sounded better than any of my mates Sharp boxes of the time, and hey, it was a Crown right.

Have not seen one on the net or around for years, until a wreck turned up on evilbay last week. The question is, do I make a bid if the price comes down to reflect the condition, or stick to the memory and the Hitachi TRK8200 I restored recently....

lav.loo - 2010-10-12 03:58

that is entirely your choice ATOMTAN, if you really miss it that much, go for it, but the 8200 is a decent box, i have one in full working order and in great condition, it goes loud and has good sound Bopping

the Conion C-100F from Coney-Onkyo(called Clairtone in Canada). Is my favorite boombox just look at it This was a beast! 31” long 16” tall,it had all the street cred one could imagine no one would mess wit you with this bad boy on your shoulder,as well as some design innovations. First of all,it had two cassette decks the played gres, but instead of making them tandem, they were stacked on top of one another with the top deck being a horizontal slot for the tape to slide in through a spring loaded door. It had 3 pairs of speakers, two 8“woofers which where beast, two 4”midranges beast to and two 2”tweeters—a full range of sound production. Two analogue VU meters when volume was high look like they wanted to explode, and LED meters as well that lightted up the sky,it was designed to not just catch eyes but hold them hostage and break your neck to get a second look u would want to take a bite out of ths eye candy! As if this was not enough, in case its size, loudness and killer super model looks overcame your hearts,it had an incredibly loud motion alarm feature that when set, went off if someone moved the radio so keep back sucka well I have to say my Conion C100f was the best radio ever stereo

lav.loo - 2010-10-12 11:09

i won't argue the c100f no way Bopping

fresh.produce - 2010-10-12 12:04

mellymelsr - 2010-10-12 12:35

Great reviews fellas. Lav Loo that Philips is a beautiful radio.

mellymelsr - 2010-10-12 12:36

I decided to put these two large boxes against each other because they essentially have the same dimensions. they definitely took two very different roads to get there though. The Lasonic is all street, with its glittering chrome, X-shaped LED, colorful labels, and unpainted black finish. The Prosonic is pure class with its stainless steel fascia, center mounted VU meters, and prologic tape controls.

Since these two radios were built for the streets I will be judging them in the way I use my boxes when carrying them on the streets. The three categories are Tuner, Cassette, and Overall sound and volume.

TUNER: The Lasonic has a very flashy tuner needle with a very neat function. It is illuminated yellow for non-stereo and red when the stations are in stereo. Problem is the tuner is so poor it was difficult to pick up even strong stations in stereo. The prosonic on the other hand has a red tuning light and a green stereo light that always seem to be lit because it picked up stations effortlessly. The Prosonic takes this category easily.

CASSETTE: The Lasonic comes with a very unique double cassette design. The lower cassette is mounted in the classic design. The upper cassette slides into a slot similar to a car cassette player. The lower cassette is used for playback and recording and has a tape counter. The upper cassette is for playback only and has no tape counter. Both cassette decks have very good sound but the lower one sounds a little cleaner to my ears. The Prosonic has a very nice, single, prologic deck with a home stereo quality to it. If I were only using these radios indoors the nod would go to the Prosonic, but since I am judging them on there street cred I have to give the nod to the Lasonic and its double cassette design.

OVERALL SOUND AND VOLUME: The Lasonic strength is its booming bass. The way those woofers dance is a thing of beauty. It has a 5 band eq that allows you to tailor the sound to your liking. Although i do like the overall sound of the Lasonic it could use just a tad more highs. If you push the two treble sliders all the way up though it will do the trick. One thing I must say is this Lasonic is loud as hell!! It would have no problem devouring most big boxes in a battle. The Prosonic's strength is in its balance. It has wonderful overall sound, great detailed highs, and solid bass. It also has a "Wide" setting which gives it very nice sound separation. When playing these two side by side there is one huge advantage the Lasonic has...it absolutely blows the Prosonic away with its power. I turned both radios up to there max pre-distortion level and there is simply no contest. The Prosonic does have a cleaner overall sound but the bass cannot keep up with the Lasonic and neither can its volume. The Lasonic actually sounds better when it very loud (at pre-distortion level). So if I was looking at one of these two radios to take with me in the streets the Lasonic is the hands down winner.

Here is a pic with an M70 so you can see how big these two monsters are!!

fresh.produce - 2010-10-12 15:18

Hey you guys where did you all get those tapes with the colors I never seen those what are they call how much they go for hmm

lav.loo - 2010-10-12 15:40

got mine off epay over here FP, their not that expensive mate, i paid about £15 for 7 diff colours, so that works out about 3 dollars a piece i think Confused
i call them retro reel tapes, you can get more expensive ones though with brand names like, TEAC, PIONEER, BASF, EAGLE, they look so cool sat in a box especially if you match the tape colour to suit your box Big Grin
white ones look good in any box Bopping

walkgirl - 2010-10-13 03:46

redbenjoe - 2010-10-13 07:08

breakdance culture.

...the Kaboom and DT-680 have a much deeper bass to to a better design. The 931 has great bass when comparing it to other one-piece boxes, it can't really compare to a multi-piece box.

retro - 2010-10-23 15:47

Congrats on that find L Lopez, I'm looking forward to the review.
