What are these marks on GF 777?

ez - 2008-06-02 06:23

Is the area around the tuner dial made of plastic or is it just metal trim? Are those marks chipped paint??? Any ideas? Asked seller what it is but no reply and auction is ending soon...

fatdog - 2008-06-02 06:34

It's just a form of corrosion. A lot of GF-777s have at least a little bit of it.

gluecifer - 2008-06-02 08:16

The finish around the tuner is this brushed aluminium/steel type paint with a slightly lined finish and then light grey plastic underneath.

Heres a close up of the damage on mine:

I was looking at touching mine up and decided against it. It'd be a damned hard job restoring that one I'd imagine.. but I guess you could replace that part of the fascia entirely.

Ironically the most damage I've seen of this corrosion is on units from Australia.. so either we don't look after 777's very well or Sharp didn't really expect them to last 25+ years in our climate.

Good luck EZ.!

Rock on.

I've got the same problem on mine and was wondering what it was. It's perfectly smooth and not like typical corrosion that leaves a damaged surface you can feel.

Can the face be replaced without replacing the entire front cabinet? I haven't had mine apart yet so I don't know what is replaceable.

retro.addict - 2008-06-02 08:32

Mine has no damage! Cool

These boxes would look much better if this was real brushed aluminium trim.

my gf 1000 have these marks too

ez - 2008-06-03 05:04

Thanks for all your input. I might hold off until I find a nicer one but I think i'll still put in lowish bid incase i get lucky. Two 9494's in the last month have sold for $202 & $225 here in OZ so i'm tipping this 777 will go for around $350 to $400. What you think glucifer?

gluecifer - 2008-06-03 06:44

Yeah, I was thinking it might get $350-400 or so, the last one I saw listed on .au ebay went for $440 in slightly better condition, but with replaced speakers... but you never know.

Australian ebay's turned into thunderdome lately, I've seen some blaster's go for surprisingly high amounts based on similar ones being sold on u.s ebay. I guess that'll always be the case with a lot of u.s branded ones that didn't get distributed widely (or at all) when they were originally released in the 80s...like that Crown 970F that slipped through my fingers the other week.

I was the one that got $202 9494. She's getting delivered on sunday and I can't wait. Very happy to get her for that price based on the condition described in the listing.

Slim pickings on .au ebay this week so far though and I'll probably have to mortgage the house to be competitive with the just listed JC2000 but it's all part of the fun.

Good luck with the 777 EZ. I'm sure you'll love her for all her faults regardless.

Rock on.

Make sure you paint the speakers white on the 9494, that thing will come up mint Nod Yes . I was thinking of bidding on it and would have given you a run for your money but I've gone off the 9494 recently. I sat there and wanted to bid but felt no love. Right now i just want big and bad. 2000 looks mighty tempting...

Hi eddy-That is like the most beautiful speciman of a GF-777 I've ever seen!!
That's like perfect.
I really want one like this someday-I'm afraid I'll have to pay alot-700-1,000 for one like this I bet!!
Thanks for your photos-I'm still restoring mine-painfully slowly.
It will be nice to have a 2nd. mint one though like I have with my J.V.C.PC55's.
I have a perfect one and then the one I bought originally new back in 1985'.
Thanks and have a great weekend-ghettobooom777. Smile

arkay - 2008-06-05 01:20

About eight out of ten 777s I see have at least some of that kind of corrosion, always and only on that one panel around those control knobs. Like the missing metal strips on 555s, it seems to be a characteristic weakness of that model.

I haven't found any way to get rid of it, although a light coating of oil can make it less visible. Wet cleaning can make it dramatically worse, too --or at least a LOT more visible. [Discovered that the hard way...].

The only "perfect" 777 I've found (not even a trace of that oxidation or other flaws), I sealed up in plastic wrap and put high up on a shelf. Every few months, on a day when the weather is good, I take it down, play it a while (but touching it as little as possible), and seal it right back up. Hopefully that will preserve it for as long as possible against any deterioration. I have other, less pristine ones, for regular listening.

fuzzyduck - 2008-06-05 12:40

My 777 has the same crap on the control panel, it looks like fine cracks all over. I hope one day to find another front casing to swap them over. That panel is glued on and would likely break in an attempt to remove it. Frown

jvc.floyd - 2008-06-05 12:45

fuzzyduck you can drill out the spot welds on the front panel from inside the case then it comes off real easy.

fuzzyduck - 2008-06-05 13:34

Thanks for that tip JVC! Cool
Anyone got a nice one of these panels going spare? Big Grin Roll Eyes

Well I just won this for 213.50 off the bay which was suprising. I'll need a metal trim too and a set of arials if anyone has them

I bought this one from a member here.
He lives 80 miles from me
He bought it from a hifi shop that had it all these years. The thing was never sold in this shop. Everything is brand new.
