Well its restoration time again
I got my childhood box after a long search
from a member here for $100. about four months ago
Its been sitting in my closet for a month in a million pieces.
She was pretty rough with some nice gouges on the top
scratches in the plastic name badge, rusted grilles and so on.
She works with the exception of the dial light , needing some new belts and a cracked dial lens.
I started the cosmetics on it this weekend and am pleased with the results.
My big challenge is going to be getting the dial lens out as it is glued in from the factory and I want to get it out in one piece so I can get it replicated.
Any suggestions will be appreciated,
Anyhow here is how she is progressing.

What type of blue tape have you used there? All the edges and especially the chrome surrounds are real tight. Crazy good job!

Is the tuner window held in with that hot-glue type adhesive? If it is the only thing I could suggest is some very controlled and careful use of a heat gun on the affixed areas. Have to be careful not to heat up the surround too much or you might craze it. Prying it gently off one side at a time while the glue is at a more liquid temperature may get it to pop-off reasonably easily without damaging your fine resoration work.

This is just a suggestion though, I've not replaced a tuner window before, and I'm sure there are people here with some actual experience doing it. Just imparting some of my scratchbuilding/modding/modelling knowledge.

OH SWEET ! I'm still up in the air if I'm going to paint the small imperfections on my box or just move on and be happy it's in the condition it's in. Yours looks really good and after seeing how the tuner lens is attached all I can say is GOOD LUCK ! I really hope you come up with a method of removal without jeopardizing the restoration work you've done so far.

Anyway it looks really nice Can't wait to see this all finished up

Hey Frank are you doing anything custom with the illumination ? I was thinking about changing everything to blue and possibly adding a few extra lights through out ? Who knows ? I need to buy my belts before I can do anything LOL

That is just plain old 3m painters tape.
You could get it at your local hardware store

No I was going to have a piece of plexi glass cut for it and bevel the edges like factory.

I am going to have to replace the dial light with some thing.
When I had mine as a kid I put lights behind the woofers that would blink to the beat and illuminate the woofers.
It was pretty sweet.
I may do this again with some nice leds and use the same color for the dial.

I really want this one to be as close to mint as I can get it.
I dont think I will live with the dial lens the way it is as it will really bug me.

Frank, your projects should be inspiration for us all. I'm sure most of us have boxes that would benefit from a treatment like your giving that Rising.

That lookin pretty sick! Great job!

Well ive been working hard tonight from about 5:00 pm
till midnight to get the Rising done.
First off was the task of getting the dial lens out.
I decided to carefully cut it out with a dremel and a cut off disk.
I cut right where the glue was and popped it right out.
I then proceded to polish and install the new one, I used crazy glue and Hot glue to seal it up.
I used Novus plastic polish to clean up all of the clear plastic and was very happy with the results.
Novus is a 3 step cleaner and scratch remover .
I used Apple sauce plastic polish to give it a beautiful luster.
Then I proceeded to solder in these new blue leds to replace the burnt out dial lamps.
Before re assembly I had to give the body a bath.
It was totally filthy so I used scrubbing bubbles to remove the years of grime and dirt , came out very nice and didnt harm the plastic finish.
while that was drying i went ahead and cleaned all the knobs and polished them with a micro-fiber cloth.
once dryed I installed all the electronics.
After electronics installation I went ahead and tested all the functions out.
All good and functional so now I glued all the stainless trim back on and re installed all the knobs.
last but not least replaced those goofy a$$ way longer than stock antennas with ones that fit properly.
I have to say I am very proud of this one.
This is my personal grail I had when I was a kid and now I have it back.
I got this box from member blossom here on the S2G for 100.00 and it was very rough,but now she is a shiny jewel and the centerpiece of my collection.
I am so very very very excited and am pumpin some jams out of it as I write.
I cant stop staring!!!!

No major restorations for a while i guess.
Next I have some touch up one one of my JVC m-70's
some of the silver is faded from the top corners
and grills need painting .
I am also planning on fixing my other M-70.
It has a crack on the side that has been repaired but needs some finessing and finish work plus tape deck work
then I will be offering it up for sale or giving it to my dad.
I am still waiting on the stainless trim for my M-90 and I am sending the original speakers out for re-build.
Either I will re-install or I will save them (the Marantz woofers I installed sound so much better).
I also grabbed my dads Sanyo M9935K that he has had since new
its been well kept in a plastic bag for years and is near mint.
It is having problems with the volume knob and de-ox is not cutting it so I will have to dis-assemble it for repair and polish a faded spot in the tuner dial.

Thanks bro I was hoping to inspire you with yours , give you some Ideas and maybe let you see how nice these can turn out.
If you use the blue LEDS it will give a purpleish hue it looks so much nicer in person.
I put two behind the woofers but they didnt turn out as well as i thought they would.
I think i might replace the mics with the leds , that would be pretty nice i think.
The Rising is to good looking a box to be all dingy and faded.

Not sure I like it or not let me know what you think.

Maybe have blue LEDs at 12 and 6. Have red LEDs at 3 and 9!!

Leave the blue going across and have red going vertical, if you realy wanted to be cocky you could connect the red light to a different section of the led's then hopefully you would have red and blue flashing at different times.

I want to do all blue even replace the existing reds with blue

Frank did you hook the flashing LED's up to the positive and negative on the speakers ? did you have to run resistors or anything ? Man that thing looks DOPE with all the blue
