australian members?

djdaniel88 - 2008-04-12 07:47

hi guys!

i have come and gone from this forum for ages now, casually browsing the forums every now and then. this time i saw the new lasonic i931, and i have the bug again, i want an old school ghettoblaster. i have made two attempts at starting a collection, but never found one to start me off... then my interest kind of fizzled, but never died lol

i'm determined to find one this time! trouble is i'm in australia. next problem is i only like the big boxes with large woofers, the ones that are hard to find. where should i be looking?? is there anybody on here from aus that could give me a few pointers?

the new lasonic, its not the same as the old school ones, but i'd like to get my hands on one. does anybody know if these are available internationally or just the US?

thanks for any help!
daniel

I actually have bought a box from eBay and had it shipped from Austraila to Alabama(U.S.A.). Hang in there my friend. And check out this thread:

Where Are You Located?

You will have to be diligent in your search and also be willing to part with some serious quid to have something shipped overseas. But you can get what your looking for. Good Luck! Big Grin

Howdy Daniel,

You may ever so occassionally see one at Cash Converters ( I bought a near mint JVC M-70 there for $65).

Australian ebay every month or so throws up the type of box you are after in Australia, and prices are normally reasonable by bay standards

Hello

I'm a recent member but longtime ghetto blaster fan in .au too. Been trying to get started for a while after owning a few originals in the 80s.

Thing is after reading everything and researching here/ebay/other sites I worked out what I wanted and then (by the sheerest of luck) I picked up my 'most wanted' this week - a 99% mint GF-777 from the local recyclers (it's a pretty funny story I'll post later on).

From what I can gather ebay's going to be your best bet outside of trawlling garage sales and such. Ghetto blasters haven't made the leap to being regarded as 'valuable' to the usual purveyors of 2nd hand collectibles down here yet so trash and treasure type places are probably the best bet as they're still thought of as 'junk' by most of the people that own them.

I'm still deciding if I'm going to collect, or just be happy with my GF-777... I'd adore an old Lasonic or Conion but they never made any kind of mass distribution down here in the 80s, so it'd have to be sourced from the u.s or .eu... which means awful shipping costs (I'd hate to see the shipping cost of a GF-777 based on it's almost comedic weight from the u.s to here, thats for sure).

I'm still keeping an eye on anything that pops up and keep asking around all the pawnbrokers and other places that might be a chance, so we'll see. It's lots of fun (well I think it is) monitoring the Ghetto Blasters that go up to ebay, just pray like I do that they only ship inside Australia and you're in with a chance for a hot bargain! A beautiful Sharp GF-7700 compo went for AUD$25 only a few days ago.

Good luck though, I sincerely wish you the luck I had this week getting my GF-777.
