Hey folks, We all know that the JVC 550 is the King of the Mono's but what others out there deserve respect?
Here is my contribution, also a JVC funny enough..
JVC RC-525LB
With the Zoom Shooter mic, this is quite a cool looking weapon for a Mono
Dang! Never seen that one. I love the tweeter grill and the massive microphone.
I also meant to mention how I love the fact that the handle is virtually identical to the front protection bars on the 550
Class, pure JVC class
geoffhartwell - 2008-02-17 08:12
its kinda cool, did it come out before the 550, if it did thay must of got the handle idea from this one

Favorites from my collection...
Great looker and sounder (heavy, too): GE 3-5280A
Nice example of the "military look": Sanyo M8500
A rare one: NEC RM248RE (model with the old Eastern bloc FM band, 64-74 MHz)
Got what it takes... size, features, sound, weight (but no Zoom Shooter mic
): JVC RC-345W
Besides a couple of GE mono 8 track boxes, this is the only mono cassette player I have. Its a tiny Jvc RC-SJW.

The big Sony's deserve a mention..
CFS-1980
CF-480S
And the big brother the CFS-1990
But my personal 'Grail' has to be this Toshiba RT2800
NED, isn't that a 'radio'?
Very nice units Agent!!!!
I like the bigger Sony and the Toshiba the best.

That is a nice miniradio!!
After JC's beautiful photos, I'm (almost) too embarassed to show this quickly/badly-shot picture of my four versions of the 2600. But here it is anyway... because Ned asked for it.
You got your Euro/world "DR26" version, your Japanese "Proceed," your 2600LBS version with station presets, and your regular Panasonic. (Better photos someday... in another thread! Sorry for the hijack, manley.
)
I've got an idea! Here's a way to go from shortwave radios back to the topic of the thread. It's my Philips D7456, a multiband radio with a mono casette deck. It's the best of both worlds!
thats frikkin sweey Baby boomer! how do they sound?

Nice one Chris Candle Puts out some nice stuff,I still Like my Panny, and The sharp Tri mate. Tv Box
Jeez!!Just logged back on after creating this post earlier and all I can say is WOW!!
There really are some cool Mono's out there! It's nice to see that the big boys who produced some of our favourite stereo's back in the day put just as much thought into the Mono's they decided to build...way cool! I guess that when the option of buying a Stereo device as apposed to a Mono kind of device made these things fairly rare!

And as for that Toshiba Mono, that has to be one of the coolest things I have seen in a very long time
I don't see a tape deck on these?? In my opinion,it's a "Portable Radio" not a boombox, without the tape deck otherwise there are thousands never seen or even mentioned here.

Jesus dude relax
you are correct but theres no need for harsh rules. they make nice viewing. the nat pan i posted certainly has some ghettoblaster styling cues.

TOTALLY
Some nice golden oldies there lads, makes a change from the boombox we have seen 100 times before.
I've said it before (about some mono Aiwas
here) & I'll say it again, there's something very cool about a big, brick sh*t-house mono b-box...

My Sony CF-495L is amazing, it's absoulutely solid and thumps much harder than 95% all of my Stereo boxes... including the GF-9000!

If you mean the 2600's, well, they're not very dynamic. Not terrible, but a little short on highs and lows. Especially lows. But these radios are meant more for scanning the airwaves for distant stations (actually, the smaller RX-2200 is better at that, but the 2600 isn't bad) than for listening to music. The volume can be turned up pretty loud, though, before you hear any distortion. The Philips, however, has surprisingly good sound. Crisp, clear highs and enough bass to make FM music sound pretty good!

I wish I could say the same about my Sony CFM-25. Don't get me wrong; the sound is clear and full. But it's a much lower-end model that runs and hides when I bring out my GF-9000.
Since I'm in a posting mood, here are a few more from the collection, just for fun...
JVC 3060 AM/FM/TV
Panasonic LTD RX-1440. I've never understood the "LTD" designation on some of Panasonic's products. Were these really limited editions? If so, exactly how limited were they?? (My guess: limited to the number of people who would buy them!
)
Finally (for now), a National Panasonic R-5110 MW/SW1/SW2. It's a heavy, good sounding box, but the good sound is wasted without an FM band.
Baby Boomer,I want to know if the nice rc 345 has a LED level meter indicator in 2 colours and 10 segment. In my childhood I was very impressed by the 2 colour LED indicator of the gf 9595.
If so ,the mono boxes don't stop to amase me:music search, coplicated VU-s,lots of other functions and great design.

Yes!!
The LED level meter has 10 segments and 2 colors: the lower 7 are green and the top 3 are red. (The two red LED's on the right are the battery level indicator. 2 reds = full.)

I highly doubt 'LTD' means that particular radio's a limited edition model. I'm pretty sure LTD means that Panasonic is a company "limited by guarantee" (whatever that means!). I've seen on the letterhead of a certain company newsletter (whose company name ends in 'Ltd'), and in brackets it explains "being a company limited by guarantee".
Can anyone verify this?
James have others to take pictures of as (James) find's them again in my wharehouse apartment

Man, this thread has me practically drooling on the keyboard! I have some of these, including the JVC in the original post, which I keep on "permanent display" in my office room where I can see it a lot.
Also the 3500 and 9500 from the Dynamic Sound series, but not the 8500 pictured above. I'd like to complete that series, if I get lucky enough to find them all.
Have to agree that the ultimate grail among this type has to be that Toahiba! I've seen pics of it (I think it was the same model -?) with a boom mic that was attached with a long, multi-part boom arm, and one with a parabolic sound-collector on top. Those may not have the sound quality of the JVC 550, but for sheer over-the-top cool looks, they are unbeatable.
I really like "funky" monos!
EDIT: I just searched the Toshiba, and it wasn't multi-part boom-armed, but it is the one with the parabolic:

Reopening this thread as I personally believe you can't have too many Mono's
Here is my small collection of mono's

Yes they are mate. The Panasonic was Dads. He bought it in 1976, we spent many hours of fun listening to wierd and wonderfull stuff on shortwave! The Sony was my mate Dave's; he donated it to my collection about a year or so ago. It is an 80's radio and was pretty much top of the range at the time!
