Mmmm, thought this one would come up.
The speaker measurement is usually based on the diameter of the hole needed to correctly mount the speaker, so many "8inch" speakers will have cone diameters less than 8".
Then (if you're still awake Smile) you can consider where the cone ends - before or after the flexible edging...

ned.209 - 2008-02-18 06:06

what Isolater is saying is that even though the hole might be slightly less that 8 inches the woofer is in fact 8 inches, 8 inch is a standard size. speakers generally are either 6.5, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 21 i think inch sizes. there are thousands and thousand of different makes and models of speakers in these standard sizes. woofer of different sizes are exceptions to the rule and are rare.

there are also smaller diameter ones like 3 inch and 5 inch.

oops sorry Iso you were talking about cone area... different subject. still though, with regard to mounting they are standard sizes.

Still, it says "COAXIAL 8" SPEAKER" on the box itself. Unless Sanyo is fibbing...

The only real way to dead this discussion is for DecentMan4you to open up the box, take out the speaker and post a picture of him measuring it. Wink

OK, that's a little trickery sort of. Wink
The add says 20cm which is technically 7.87 inches, so you doubters are technically right but I think that's close enough to call 8", we typically do call 20cm boxes 8 inch speakers. Think of the Rising 20/20, we call that an 8 inch box.

Beast, please, relax.

just to make it reallll simple for you. -boxes are made, with eith 6.5, or 8 inch woofers.

THERE ARE no boxes with 7.5 inch woofers

THERE ARE no boxes with 7 inch woofers.

just 6.5, and 8. understand?

monolithic - 2008-03-02 20:43

I Agree NED knows his $hit! Trust me! Nod Yes

Let's agree or agree to disagree and move on! Wink

fatdog - 2008-03-03 10:11

This whole thing was discussed ad nauseum many months ago. Speaker size is measured using the mounting diameter. Plain and simple. Beast69, I think what you're referring to is the cone size. Cone size will always be smaller than stated measurements simply because the cone cannot go all the way to the edge of the speaker mount. Cone surrounds, whether foam or stiff paper, also take up part of that measurement. So, in essence, the woofer CONES in an M90 could very well be 7.25", but the actual diameter, in whole, is 8" and therefore considered an 8" speaker.

Exactly Fatdog, the speaker size is not directly related to the cone area.

"Real grail" looks without the "real grail" sound. Frown

It is a very photogenic box tho... Wish I had taken it to the nearby field and let the sun shine on it when I took those pics months ago. Cool
