redbenjoe - 2008-03-14 05:59

trk9900 --i am STILL waiting to hear a truly great sounding hitachi --there is one on ebay this week -
anybody here have or heard this one ? is it really their flagship model

redbenjoe - 2008-03-15 06:23

anyone ??

maybe its not such a flagship , if none of us ever heard one Smile

ned.209 - 2008-03-15 06:41

what does it look like Redben? im drawing a blank here

enskanker - 2008-03-15 06:41

I saw a few Hitachi boomboxes on eBay, redjoebear, but no boats or such.

redbenjoe - 2008-03-15 07:07

same here uncle -- and "flagships" are over-rated anyway -- like you probably heard that the Titanic sunk Smile

Ned - here is the listing -- for whatever they all may be worth --this TRK has LOTS of knobs !

The seller failed to mention that it's missing the door for the bottom front. I could live with a few scratches and a missing antenna, but a missing door? No longer 9 out of 10 in my book.

ned.209 - 2008-03-15 07:17

ha ha! i had one! that is a SOLID box. no joke, the walls of the speakers are bout a quarter inch thick, mad build quality. mine was a loss though, there was something very wrong with it, so i dumped it. kept on making screeching nioses. i reckon its real loud and powerful though. bass reflex speakers. huge magnets. if you can get it for low go for it.

ned.209 - 2008-03-15 07:21

no no Fatdog, im 99% sure the door is in its lowered postion in the photo, it kind of folds down and into the unit. worth asking the seller about it though

redbenjoe - 2008-03-15 07:28

good eye, fatdog -- i will ask the seller about that--

thanks , ned --- ONE more question:

i have their #9140 -- which is also VERY solid and sounds good (just not great)
if you think this one is at least that good --please
let me know --

ned.209 - 2008-03-15 07:39

cant answer that Redben, i dont have the model you speak of, an i never heard the 9900 fully fired up. i tried to fiddle with it for a while, and was sucessful to a degree, i just remember thinking it was an animal.

oldskool69 - 2008-03-15 08:18

I think Hitahci had some higher end equipment but this isn't a bad sounding one. Not their top end though. Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-03-15 08:57

i bought a few of the 3D series that isolator suggested -- and they ARE real good -
but of the hitachi traditional (TRK. ETC) designs - which do you guys think are the BEST -- thanks again

It seems that TRK-9990W may be a follow up version of the TRK-9140W, at least they look similar in size and appearance. I just happen to get one today (9140) and this is a great sounding box (15Wx15W):

The seller used interesting packaging concept:

Good thing I did not throw it away... no wasted space...

All that peppered with popcorn... It took me 15 min to clean up the mess after I got it out... Luckily - no damage, safe and sound!

redbenjoe - 2008-03-18 18:24

thanks vitalxs -

EGG CARTONS !! dont remember any posts about them-
looks like a good packing supply -- Smile

arkay - 2008-03-19 08:08

Egg cartons are pretty good, but not with heavy stuff. IF the box is heavy enough to crush the egg cartons, they won't spring back. Non-resilient packing material is always risky, as it only protects during the FIRST impact, but not the second, third, etc... That said, it takes a very hard impact to crush an egg carton, especially if it is taped up around the "seam", but still... why take the risk? For lighter-weight boxes that wouldn't hit with enough force to crush the carton, it would be very effective.
