I think it misses part of the point of the real boomboxes which are looks. Boomboxes weren't just about being very comfortable and convenient sound machines. They are supposed to be flashy (mostly) while not blending in, sound quality was only part of the consideration in most cases. This is why most eggs missed the mark of a boombox and just don't have much love.
I'm somewhat undecided on the backpack because I suppose it has a purpose however, it doesn't work for me.
I'm glad to see innovation even if it's bad.The backpack design looks like you should be carrying a baby instead of a blaster, this despite the fact that many of us consider our blasters to be our "baby".As for the boombox characterization,I'm sure it most probably runs on batteries and plays some form of removable media. However,I still don't know if it has a tuner or you could consider its shoulder straps to be a handle.
that may probably be good for those people that right scooters on a cross country ride
Brilliant guy that I am, I ran out and bought one of those JVC Sound Rockets the moment it was available. A backpack boombox seemed like a great idea. But I have yet to wear it... or even use it. At least the Reppo II in the article looks like a backpack, and not (*ahem*) a giant penis.
a giant ("ahem") penis with a remote !
it really looks like spongebobs friend patrick
Would not be caught dead with one of those! No way!

nothing,
That thing looks a little too, uh, "eggy" for my tastes.
I've seen halfway decent sound systems (equivalent to any boombox) built into backpacks at the past electronics (industry) exhibition here in Hong Kong. They looked okay, like nice backpacks. In fact, the speakers and electronics were so well hidden inside that you wondered at first where the sound was coming from!
To me, that is not the same thing culturally/symbolically as a traditional boombox. It is portable sound, but so is a 1960s transistor radio. I suppose it has its purposes. Maybe someone hiking along the beach for fitness could load it up, and use the music to cut the boredom? Don't know, but if they take it out and blast it while out in the "great outdoors" then I'd agree with what is written on that site... huntin' season!
Whether you like it or not, it's nice to see people innovating, introducing new product variations.
YUCK!
