My first local find worth a story.
A local add popped up last Friday for a JVC RC-550JW that stated it was in good condition. I immediately replied to the add via email with my phone number. Well I waited Friday then Saturday and Sunday but never received a response and thought for sure it was sold to someone else.
Well last night I recieved a call from the seller who said there has been a lot of responses for the box. I asked when we could meet up and he asked me when I could make it over, well I instantly said about 45 minutes. He agreed to the time and I was off to the races, making sure I didn't waste time.
When I arrived it was obvious this guy likes to collect old gear, he had all kinds of old equipment laying around and some nice pieces at that. He had the radio setup to demo and it worked perfectly, tape and all. It is in physically excellent condition with some cleanup necessary and a few nicks but wow what a radio, just what I was hoping to find. It's in better shape than any other 550 I've seen except for Mint or NIB 550's. Needless to say I paid for the radio without haggling on the price and brought it home.
I will post pics later when I get a chance to snap a few shots.
GREAT story - its must feel so good
Nice!!!!!!!
Local news paper add, or via the net?
And yes....... DO NOT forget them pics!
The want-ads seem to be the hottest thing going to find boomboxes of late! Congrats MB! Can't wait to see the pics!

OK guys the mystery medium was Craigslist. Craigslist has been kind to me 5 times since December and I'm sure many of you have prospered in Craigslist as well.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
YES YES YES!!!
Way to go on that score! What do you think huh? THE coolest looking box or what!?
Wow, well done!

Beatbox your right, it's one cool looking boombox. I remember drooling over this box around 1980 at a place called Pacific Stereo. They had one on the top shelf where I couldn't touch it but I went into that store often and dreamed of having one, now I do so that makes it ultra cool.
Holy Fantastic Finds Batman!!!
You can't beat that and no, no hints at what it cost cause we will all be in tears! Congrats to you MB! Well done my friend! Well done!

Thanks oldskool, I haven't even cleaned it yet so it's going to look even better when I'm finished.
That is super! What a great day to bring that 550jw home. Congratulations!
Nice find!! Looks like you'll be needin' a door sticker.

Thanks bredgeo.
I don't mind telling what I paid for it but I have one vote not to tell and one vote to tell.
What the heck, I coughed up $70 for it. I know it's not the $10 steal but $70 for an excellent condition fully functional RC-550JW is still an exceptionally good deal.

Oh, that is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You got to be one
and
man!!!!
Das ist ja so wunderbar....Frohe Boombox Tag fur you.
Nice score ! $70 beans aint squat ! I'm not crazy into the early stuff since I was born in 76 but I totally respect and admire it
Nice scoop I'm sure from your post that you love it just as much or more then the boxes you already have... well maybe not all of them LOL
Do those old ones bump or do they have great sound quality or is it just about chasing the beginning of an evolution ?
Just curious
Up until this week end I only collected BBX's cause I loved them and had no idea there was such a huge following and so many techs that know all the ins and outs
Anyway... glad to be here and looking forward to learning about something I've always been passionate about
So again Nice Score

Sound quality of a 550....???????? EH... No!
Chasing evolution.... UH.... Yeah! Also, it has GOOD LOOKS!
That's what I figured
The more I look at it the more appealing it becomes
well the bbx gods answered your prayers for a good one nice going

There are many better sounding boxes than the 550. It's does produce very good sound for a mono box but with the 550 it's about the cool factor and the looks. The fact that there is a history for me with this box is another big factor in wanting one.

Ramon, I figure that's the result of some kind of good karma for selling you guys the parts of my beater 550. It hasn't been two weeks since I parted out my beater 550 then all of a sudden I scored this one locally. I've never even seen one local since 1980 until this one popped up.
Well congrats again on a great score and it's even more meaningful now that I understand why the box is so impotant to you personally
Very Cool & Karma RULES !
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!! I can't believe I missed this post. Awesome find, you must be super happy. Great find for sure.

Thanks Skippy and Jared!
The thing about CL is you never know when these things are going to pop up so you have to look often, kind of like ebay. You also have to be johnny on the spot or some one else will likely beat you to it. This is why I was amazed to get this 550 after 4 days of not hearing back from the seller.

Congrats on the new additon.
The 550 is super cool looking.
I remember the first time I saw one was
back in the day in Brooklyn NY. at sunset park.
This is when people actually carried them around.
Man was I amazed by the size of it.
Was there a similar box that was nicknamed the
" big mouth " or was it this one????

Totally the same for me!!!!!!!! I was out at my local Hi-Fi shop, going there to see what new stuff had come in and drooling on all those Bboxes ... When I saw it I asked the sales-person if I could see it (the display one) he handed it over and boy was it cool! But it was only "Mono" that is what made me not want to buy one 'cos not "Stereo"...
... Dumb, no?

I've never heard the term "Big Mouth" but it fits doesn't it? It's actually the size of this mono box that makes it head and shoulders above the rest and has made me whant one ever since I saw it sitting on the shelf at Pacific Stereo around 1980. I'm really not interested in other mono boxes, like Bredgeo I'm partial to the 1 piece stereo boxes but this one is just kick butt cool.
