but its 5 inches. when they say its unlike anything else they aint kiddin, its really light considering the power itll put out. so i was trying to figure out how i could use one, or two or four, for a while now. but what radio uses 5 inch drivers? friggin none, so far as i know.



then yesterday it came to me. the D8443. so i went and measured the frame i had lying in wait for some brainstorm that i might have. 5 inches. the two outer, piece of crap weak ass smaller drivers on either side of the sub on a d8443 are 5 inches.

heres the cool part. my little tripath amp, can handle a 4 ohm load. it has two challels, left and right. that means, that i can drive two of these 8ohm speakers with one channel, and with the other channel i can power a big freakin 8 inch speaker in the center.

isnt that fantastic. im soooo clever. driving two speakers with one channel increases the load on the amp, but also results in more output, and the amp can handle that load.

finally, the d8 will sound as good as it looks, and it looks, really, really, really really, good

Excellent NED, well done! This new driver looks like it means business. Interesting that it's a quality built unit, and so light weight...I've always preferred boat anchor- heavy speakers. This type would take some getting used to. Glad you have a good use for 'em!

Ehhhh..... Sorry for asking NED, but aren't the left and right driver you are going to replace be "ONE" channel, and the center driver be the other channel...... or have I missed something?

doesnt bother me that the stereo will be off, all i want is a radio thats light and powerful enough to move itself backward across the floor when the bass hits.

I knew I wasn't the only person whose boombox collecting occasionally gets influenced by the Boombox Museum pages! I'm still trying to track down obscure microphones to mimic some of the boxes on pages there, but REMOVING a tape door so as to imitate an INcomplete one there? That's new ...and different!

I hope you at least kept the removed parts, so it could be re-completed later. Frankly, I might have sent a nicer pic of the complete box, so the museum could "improve" the pic, instead of "de-improving" my box to match theirs...

befor i found stereo2go i found the museum. i printed out the stereos i liked and spent a looooonnngg time staring at them. i particularly loved the dirty old D8. dirt,i think, suits certain radios, and really your wiping away 20 years of history when you clean them. im not saying it the right view, just a view.

I got the same feeling you did Ned when I saw the D8443 on the Boombox Museum website.Missing its cassette deck door gave it the look of a war torn survivor.This was only enhanced by the fact that the box still had an enormously powerful look by design.It gave the impression that it was all powerful and virtually indestructible.It's too bad the 8443 was not that great of a performer and was not as solid as it appeared.The 8443 just does not live up to it's legendary looks.You seem on the verge of correcting this and turning it into a real heavyweight performer.Some of us have asked for a mod for this box.Please keep us posted and take plenty of pictures of the process.

Concerning your mod lacking stereo,anyone who owns one of these knows the box doesn't have good stereo to begin with!It's almost a 5 speaker mono box for all practical purposes.The problem probably has to do with interference from its massive center woofer.However,I've never felt stereo was essential on a one piece box that was meant to be cranked.You are simply too far away from it while listening for it to be particularly noticable.The one thing I do wonder about is the tweeters.Will these still put out a stereo signal with your mod?Many times I've wondered if the tweeters actually work at all on this box.To me it just doesn't sound like a box with 5 drivers going.Could you replace the tweets with better ones also?

hi Jovie, im not using the tweeters, in fact the box is completely hollow. im using three fullrange drivers and a 'lil amp. good point about the stereo function. yeah this thingll be the complete package when i finish it, lookin forward to it.
