Hello Mesh Smile

That is a sony aw8000!!! , it is more like
a walkman actually Red Face

How is the sound?? Cool

isolator42 - 2008-10-16 09:26

...very sweet.
I suspect the sound isn't exactly blow your socks off stuff...

Sony's best stuff really had the "want one" factor, don't you think?

You can see that the cassette mechanism is based around the WM-10.

Strange that the WA-8000 is so different from your WA-8000mkII.
This is the WA-8000:

Hiya mesh, good to see you. (as it were)

baby.boomer - 2008-10-16 11:45

Stay, Mesh, stay! Pleeeze!

Smile I had a freind in School Yrs ago,who had this little gem. Sound is of course not great but a decent little performer on sw. Nice to see one again! Cool

A few corrections here. The top model is the WA-8800 & it really isn't a boombox, it's 1" speakers are smaller than some tweeters. It actually follows the WM-100 form-factor rather than the WM-10 (a better idea in my view). It's a good looker alright but it's a pretty ill-conceived unit with randomly placed features, a shame considering the gloriously engineered walkman mechanism.

The WA-8000 is a nicer IMHO unit.

Yes, grand to hear from you again Mesh

Yeah, further investigation leads me to agree. Strange that Mesh's find Has WA-8000MKII written on it & not WA-8800.
I guess this clears up the confusion with the real WA-8000 (which I think has a little mono speaker in the back).

Thought you might know better Cris.
I looked on walkmancentral & the closest I could find was the WM-10. Curses...

...walkmancentral is a great resource, but I wish there were more pictures in the entries...

Do you have one ? if so , would you part with it ?

ao - 2008-10-20 23:23

Crikey, I didn't notice this. Mesh's unit does say 8000Mk111, must be a regional thing.

I really want one of these some day. I'm sure that when they come up for auction they must go for a small fortune.

aa.fussy - 2008-10-21 22:12

Me too-however I'd go for a CFM-10 (cassette and FM radio) or a CFS-E2.

i have a couple dual conversion shortwaves by sony from this era. i think that sony did have some trouble with bad caps from this era.
it was corrected fairly early on tho.
if i am not mistaken i think i recently saw one of those on a shortwave radio site going for two hundred or so bucks.
us boomboxers will pay some pretty crazy money for stuff.
the shortwave guys tho now they spend some insane cash on older units.
i really love this cassette shortwave you have here.
make a slinky diopole and see what you can pick up.
the reception will blow you away with that little sony.
