Forget about the fact that the JVC RC-M90 is an iconic box, the holiest of grails and blah blah blah... Other than that,
why should I buy this box? Is it the best sounding one-piece box ever made? Is it one of the loudest boxes ever made? Or is it just the best all around performer ever made? I ask these questions because I may decide to "go for broke" - literally
- to cop one of those (in fully working condition of course) on eBay before the year ends and find out for myself what all the hype is about.
peter.griffin - 2008-09-26 16:17
well, I'm actually listening to mine as I type. It's on like 2, and I can still hear amazing bass and highs.
But like any boombox, you may not like the sound? The M90 is so "hyped", it may be a let down to you. You never know. I had one as a teen, and got this one for 50 bucks last year. I personally would not spend 800+ on one. But thats me.
Then again I spent almost 1000+ getting my GF777z from China almost 3 years ago(before it started raining gf777z's)cause I wanted one so bad
Good luck, I hope it's everything you hope for

Well, you seem to have almost every box ever made!
Would you say with confidence that the M90 is the best one-piece box in your collection?
Go get one it realy is the best all round box there is but even the m90 wasn't good enough for me untill i modded mine, now mine realy is the best box in my collection for bass and volume makes the likes of the aiwa 880 sound poor and beats the telefunken studio 1m, when un modded the m90 is close with the gf1000 and the telefunken 1m sounds better, but when modded and volume modifacation is made there is no better 1 peice, good luck man on getting one. Also i would agree there not worth 500 pounds plus no box is, you can buy a state of the art computer plasma tv or valve equipment for that but it is a damn good box.
I have JVCs M90 and M70, Sharp GF-777, Panasonic RX-5350, Sanyo BigBen among others - and M90 sounds the best of all. Hope this helps

I thinks I have all of those, the panny I would have to go an look for that one.
overall the M90 is yes well suited for most sound and it's big as well, to me, I kinda like's the m70 to as it's a little bit smaller in sheer phyisical size as opposed to the M90, Just depend's on how much Box you wanna lug around when ...
Try lugging the wx1 around james

That raises a good question... Do y'all use the M90 as a reference box to judge the sound of other boxes?
I use an m90 most of the time mono so i guess the answer is yes i use it as a refrance till a better box comes along.

i judge each box on its own Merritt. i may get in trouble for saying this but i think the M90 is a bit over rated
. yeah it sounds really good but i think the M70 might be better as well as other boxes. its the iconic thing that gives it its value i think
but thats just me

I agree with Sinister. The M90, while very nice for what it is...is over rated. And I don't worry about wheteher or not someone doesn't like my opinion. I respect the fact that some see it as the ultimate. That is their choice. But the reality is that theree are others, not many, but others that will out perform it power and sound wise.

I only have 3 though 2 of them are a Goldstar TSR-801 and a Prosonic PQR-9962 and I am giving away the goldstar to somebody for a trade of a boombox , So I'll only have 2 again, the Prosonic and the JVC

I agree hole heartedly but when modded like the pitbull is look out.
yeah sure but then your talking about a modded box not factory stock. its a whole other box.
Monolithic, i am with the guys, its over rated, sure is a good sounding radio but once you get it, becomes just another radio, i have one and i listen to it like every 3 months or so, i am so glad i only paid 3 dollars for it.
so i say dont go broke for a m90 not worth it.

sin bro, i think when both stock altho not as loud the 880 has a warmer sound than the m90 just to name 1
well i think a modded gf 777/1000 would give the m90 a run for its money ,but a stock gf 777 has no chance.but a gf 777 with the right speakers is scary and its very simple to achieve plus you can pick on up cheaper than an m90 ,the gf 777 is a badd ass looking box and you can turn em into battle machines with a little work.another thing is the gf 777 has plenty of power just the stock speakers are so thin and flimsy the just suck .
for sure floyd, but again we're in a whole new ball game with modding. i could mod my M90, helix, or even my 20/20 to out bang anything, but if we're talk true o.g. classic my opinion still stands
oh by the way im going to send you something floyd
masterblaster84 - 2008-09-26 20:09
All very good points but the summary I think is it's probably one of the top 1-piece boxes to try. Everybody has different taste so you may think it's the best or you may not be impressed however, it's not easy for other 1-piece boxes to beat the M90. Is it worth $800 or more? that's a question only you can answer but to most of us no boombox is really worth $800 or more. Many of us who have experienced moments of dinginess with boombox collecting may pay that much for 1 or more boxes just to get it, sometimes we're totally happy about it and other times we may regret it. Speaking for myself I paid about $600 for my nice M90 and I haven't regretted it, I would probably like it even more if I bought it for $5 like some lucky members.
Many boxes are hyped and others are sleepers so in some sense of lunacy you have to experiment a little unless your fortunate enough to live close to DM4U then you could go listen to every box made and save yourself the experience of collecting way to many boxes like most of us have done.
Although it destorts more than the m90 when stock the studio 1 is about the best you can get, trouble with them when oparated on batts they loose half there power.
there is a limit that i will pay for any box i think 800 bucks is too much at that piont i'll build my own that will blow it away.

oh by the way im going to send you something floyd
cool i wonder what it is.
masterblaster84 - 2008-09-26 20:25
Floyd, no question you could build a box to crush the M90. I agree that $800 is crazy money for an old boombox but sometimes we get stupid at the wrong time.
For me I don't collect these boxes solely for sound. Having grown up with these boxes without being able to own them I think it's freaking cool to have them now even if they don't necessarily have kick a$$ sound. Just looking, holding and hearing them puts a smile on face that's hard to explain.

Mono I love your Avatar!
I waisted a lot of time watching that show, at the time my hormones were out of control and I thought Julie was so hot.

, i have 40 or so spare boxes to proove it
but you have to have you're battle axes
.
yes the m90 is a top dog loud very well made good looks,,not everyone will agree but to really see for yourself is to have one in front of you and compare next to other boxes you may have,, and even if you do not like it its a great box to have in your collection and its a fast selling box in case of you know what it happens

Thanks.
Isaac was the man,... so I've heard.
I used to watch "The Love Boat" when it had it's original run but I can't remember much from that show now.
Isaac's gesture is funny as hell tho!

That's a pretty strong statement!
It's funny 'cause originally, I was gonna throw the Conion C100F into the mix and - based on the feedback I got - buy the box that scored higher with the members here, but I didn't wanna turn it into a "THIS vs. THAT" thread.
Regardless of what I said in the 1st post, I do like the idea of owning an iconic box/holy grail.
I'm still not sold on the M90's boring color scheme tho
but that's a minor quip.

It'll eat Rimmers Modded M90 for lunch over here and spit it back across the Atlantic Ocean, the Thames River and into the Queens lap.
The reality is that as far as power, there is no modification, the speakers are the same impendance and sensitivity match. Just better. (Albeit wayyyy better.
) The Sanyo C9 is just a wolf in sheeps clothing.

you will not be disapointed with the m90. it is on the tops of many people's list for a reason...it is badass and was the craziest one peice box that money could buy at the time. It is an icon of boomboxes and it sounds great to boot. you can not go wrong owning one of these, it will always be worth something because someone will alaways want one. I can't think of another box that I would rather go broke buying...
Rimmer, I love that you manage to get the words "my modded m90" into most of your posts ! lol
By modded you mean changed the speakers right ? Or have you changed components also ?
I recon the m90 is a good box . . grails change here tho quite often , back in the day before the 777 flooded in from china, it was king, best sound etc , used to sell for £400 on ebay u.k and you were lucky if you saw one once a year . Big ben another one, they actually sound bad.
The m90 certainly sounds good, and I would say up there with the best. Personally I cant stand boxes that have been modified, I believe in them being O.G , thats just me tho , If altering them is your thing I wish you guys all the best.
How stuff sounds tho , is a very personal thing , some are after sheer quality , crisp mid and highs , stunning sound stage etc , others want big bass , some peoples bass love is for the below 70hz stuff that is felt more than heard.
The other thing here is , as these boxes age , they don't sound as good , I have 2 m70's here , one just sounds phenomenal , It was re-serviced by happy I think , the other is not as good ( tested with radio) , So they do all sound different I think . It's certainly not like when they were factory fresh brand new. Caps deteriorate etc blah blah .
Bottom line from me . M90 , classic box , great sound , the end. Everyone should own one , but at what price ???? that's up to you and your wallet size.
I held out and got lucky , mine was £150 from a work buddy . .
transamguy1977 - 2008-09-27 06:48
The M 90 is a great sounding and iconic boombox for sure.
definatly not the most exciting looking box but a well rounded 1 piece.
It is hands down the best one piece I have had in my collection.
Comparing to Conion C-100 ,C-126 ,Sharp 777,
Elta masterblaster,JVC M-70,etc.
As far as going broke getting one? You may not have a choice depending on what kind of shape you Want it in , and if you are relying soley on ebay to get this holiest of holy Grail.
Or maybe you will be like the lucky ones and score one localy for 2 or 3 dollars.
either way good luck on your quest they are great.
Worth going broke? Well that will be for you to determine for sure. I can say one thing for sure you definately will not be disapointed in the sound!
word for word with TA --
also - it was mentioned above about using the m90 as a 'referenece'
well YES--and it sounds so nice --that it has even been discouraging to get any other one-piece box --and then put it side-by-side to the m90 --
there is just something very satisfying about the fullness of its sound range --
that makes it very glad to have one --
so it does earn its reputation -
as far as '$$ value' --
well -- the $3 find is swell -
and other that that --
your on your own !!!
so hope you get one --
just DONT be in a hurry --they do come up often
Well, this is one of the main pics that convinced me to shoot for one
...
and this pic kinda sealed the deal...
If
TA's wife thinks it's cool, it MUST be cool!
Just out of curiosity - why do some think M90 is overrated?
I personally give a *pitty use* to all of my other boomboxes once or twice a month, but use M90 all the time - 'cause it sounds the best of all I have

sorry but there is a modifacation for power it's called vol gain you ajust the pots
as for the pitbull eating my m90 i sure wish i could come over and give you some real competition

basically royal i have tweaked the components lad where a normal m90 would be set to five mine is as loud on 3, aswell as the speaker upgreades and i agree with what you have stated thing is i wouldn't have modded 2 m90's myself i bought one of happy (great guy) then i treaked the volume pots, its all good anyhow some great points being razed all round.

Hey Vladi, I don't think it's so much "overrated". I would just hate for someone to buy one for huge money, only to be dissappointed with the sound. Everyone has different tastes. I came here looking for a gf777z because I remember it blowing away my M90 I had as a teen. I was even ready to trade in my M90 for it, but they stopped making them. Now I have both, and my "older" ears like the sound of the M90 much better
Ya, when I listen to GF-777 - I always wished it would have a little less bass and a little more highs - or in other words - that it would sound more like M90
I think the only downside to M90 is its looks - not the prettiest boombox IMO

Glad to see you stopping by once in a while Vladi, hope all is well.
Thanks Don!
Ya, I visit here more often now that I got all the crazy partying out of the system (well, almost
)
Ya, I like them both too. In fact - GF-777 and M70 are my two secret favorites - even if they dont sound as good as M90 - but they sound good enough, and they look like I used to look like when I was 18 - which is NOT square and silver but amazing and breathtaking
