"Can be used for a Prop in a Music Video"

71spud - 2009-04-30 07:28

Aren't you sick of seeing this in the description of non-functional boomboxes with parts missing? Roll Eyes

I am.... Razz

What other descriptions do you see that show the seller is really reaching... without telling an outright lie. Things that make you go... "Man... that's a stretch"

masterblaster84 - 2009-04-30 08:07

Seems like it's just a way the seller is trying to say it's broken but it's still usefull for something so they give the "VIDEO" example. Are there really a lot of buyers looking for a box to be used as a prop only? I haven't seen many if any.

Exactly... a real stretch....

How about "Can be used as a doorstop on a windy day" There would be more call for that.

Laugh Out Loud That's just as valid as the Music Video statement but probably more useful to most of us.

Mine is the time tested passage:

"Don't have a cassette to test the tape deck"

fatdog - 2009-04-30 08:26

What about when a seller describes a Sanyo M9935 as being "huge"? Laugh Out Loud Yep, that's a stretch.

I see that one all the time and it cracks me up, I just shake my head and move on. Nod Yes

Untested = busted.

masterblaster84 - 2009-04-30 09:14

The 9935 was Sanyo's attempt at an inexpensive midsize box using small boomer internals. This one was all about the profit margin for Sanyo. Not a bad box but not up to true Mid Size status.

"I don't have any tapes to test, but the last time I used it in 1989, it worked great."

They might as well be saying "Can be used as a really cool looking paperweight!"

Big, heavy, old, can be used as decoration.
(Finally dead) Leaving

"Probably just needs a belt" another classic

Didn't realize there were so many technicians selling boomboxes on ebay.
Laugh Out Loud

That really means tape deck doesn't work and if you buy this box it's your problem but pay extra because it's an easy fix.
I've already told you the problem which you can fix with a new belt from Radio Shack for $1. I would have done it myself but I just don't have time.
Laugh Out Loud

I was going to use the 'prop' angle early on when I started collecting as a back-door-ebay scam, but couldn't bring myself to lie.

I was going to email a seller and say my kid needed one for a prop for their school play and things were getting desperate to find one, and they needed it quickly, so I'd make an offer for them to sell it to me and pull the auction down.

I never got past that part of the planning... couldn't live with myself being a part of the lieing method of business on ebay and thought it'd just bring me bad blaster-karma in the long run.

Of course I couldn't do it now as they'd just have to check my feedback to see I've bought a lot of them.

Back on topic: my latest favourite seller line is the 'Best sounding portable I've ever heard, extremely loud and huge bass!!' on an average mid-size that distorts once it gets past 25% volume with the bass anywhere beyond neutral.

Rock On.
