Lets face it. I'm cheap. I'm too cheap to spend 20 bucks on one of those nice large reel chrome cassettes just to make my box look good. perhaps I'll find one in the bargain bin one day, but until then, I collect cool looking vintage cassettes.

I find they give just the right splash of color to my blaster.

Got a lot of ~400 different used tapes for 10euros. Most of them are "vintage".

The pics below represent about 60% of my tapes, the other 40% are packed away in boxes. This represents almost 30 years of recordings and maybe a years worth of collecting New Old Stock tapes. I look at it as a "recordable savings account" as some of the sealed tapes go for stupid-money on ebay nowadays. I've found many at thrifts stores, garage sales, ebay and from sellers at tapeheads.net.

Thanks BB. I really like them a lot and search through old cassettes often for them. I keep my collection manageable, if thats possible, by only keeping the ones that have not been subject to any writting on the cassette or sleeve. Although i have made a few exceptions.

Here's my limp contribution to the topic, after flipping through some of my stuff. Not much in comparison's to Aza's collection... but better than nothing at all!

Highlights from the first batch include a couple of paper-sleeved Sonys (distributed here by Superscope), a Philips made in Belgium, one made by Capitol Records (EMI's label in the U.S.), and a couple of old (circa 1972) Scotch tapes, one with a coupon for a free cassette when you buy five (big deal). The Philips has the Compact Cassette logo on the front.





Highlights of the second batch include a couple of early BASF's, a Pioneer, a high-grade Type-1 Maxell, a National Panasonic blank demo (came with a boombox, no doubt... probably one of mine!), and a paper-sleeve/mailer boxed tape from an Allied Radio store (a Chicago-based electronics retailer that eventually was bought by Radio Shack). All but the later ('80's) Maxell have the Compact Cassette logo. The logo on the Pioneer is very small, on the back, at the bottom right of the label. The stickers on the Allied tape show a $1.49 price.

Just a few I had to hand... so a quick shot.

I've only got a few sealed, including the TDK SA60 in this pic which I bought in 1986.
Also more recent is one of 4 packs of the newer style TDK SA90's.
I'm also happy to have a TDK MA-R 60 and some MAX-G's.
Thought I'd better have a box watching over the proceedings too!

Ive got many myself... I'll have to take a few photos.

My problem is, I can never leave them NOS... its like the new wrapper calls out to me until I tear it open and look at the tape!

Anyone else notice that openning an old NOS tape, they smell like Crayola Crayons?

I don't own nearly the supply of NOS blanks as members like JT own (WOW!), but the ones I do have stay wrapped, because I do very little recording these days. I've got scads of mix tapes from "days gone by," as well as a gazillion prerecords (still find 'em by the bundle at thrift stores), so I'm basically set when it comes to having stuff to play on my boomboxes.

Besides, as much as I like new music, it just doesn't seem necessary to make tapes of it. There are so many new listening modes available! And it just doesn't seem right to sit on my porch with Fountains of Wayne (as much as I like them) blasting out of an eighties boomer!

any thoughts of the idea that some old cool design tapes look great as displayed from the boomer? {as sort of a high tech frame?}

Thanks for the kudos on the tapes guys. Not as much money invested there as you'd think, more time and effort finding good deals on ebay and in some thrifts.

Life is too short to spend it with $hitty people, drinking crap beer, or listening to crap tapes!

I can't help it! Tapes are no longer being made in many decent formulations and I need to feed my two Nakamichi's, my Denon and a smattering of ghettoblasters! I miss access to good tapes almost as much as I miss access to good, new boomboxes.

Plus, I still trade tapes with people here (always willing, just PM me) and with many of the folks at www.tapeheads.net

I FINALLY found the tapes I wanted to show. Knew which box they were in, but couldn't find the stupid box...

Here's the most interesting ones. Mid-80's-era discount store brands. The blue one is K-mart brand. These were most of my "album collection" when I was 12-15, recorded off the radio. A very few mystery songs are still on these. (you'll notice those three don't have slipsheets. They wouldn't work with them!)


This thing became a time capsule in the mid-90's: made in high school out of a (wait for it) boombox carton. The "cassingles" were for mix compilations.


"Supertape" is Radio Shack brand


Mix tapes dating mid-90's. The wrapped ones are from '99 or so, and are my newest blank tapes. A few more of those are floating around. (Just haven't really done any tape-recording since.) The unmarked one is an XL-II in a UR 60 shell. I wanted a tape without logos for that mix.


The pre-recordeds. Along with CDs and LPs, while re-cataloguing and reorganizing them last November. Out of date already: I could fill the rest of that row and more now. (I buy most of my cassettes from goodwill nowdays.)

I wonder now and then. For those of you with large album collections, do you ever wonder how long it would take to play every one back-to-back continuously? Or one album a day? (easy enough to calculate that one)
