Hi, before this new addition to my collection arrives , I'd like to have an idea of how it sounds beforehand, to avoid possible disappointment upon arrival. I've been after one of these high quality monsters for quite a while and now I've found one! Does anyone know how well the sound of this model compares with the likes of a Sharp GF-9090, JVC RC-838 or Hitachi TRK-8600? I'm talking bass and clarity...

i had one ,it was a great sounding box very solid unit with heavy weight to it for it's size very loud with nice bass and clear highs i think you will be pleased with it ,i would say its louder than the rc 838 sounds the rx 5500 has better overall sound and power.the only other mid sized sharp i have to compare it too is the gf 8787 and the rx 5500 stomps all over it.

Ooh thankyou everyone! With it only having 6.5" woofers, I didn't expect the response to be that good. I hoped it would sound as good as you've explained, and I'm glad it apparently does. And redbenjoe, I agree that this model has a fantastic classic design, and the metal front was what prompted me to start looking for one when I first saw a picture of the model in 2006. The only disappointment I have with it's looks is the handle, I don't like the look of one which is longer than the radio itself. That's the only thing though. Oh yeah, plus it only has one antenna - I would have preferred two so I can display it with them raised in a 'V' shape! Does this model have a loudness switch?

Should be fine, 6.5 woofers are still fairly big (the 9696 woofers only measure that from the cone edges and sound great).
I've always loved the look of that box, another real 'classic' styling example in my view.

...its a Panasonic, of course it sounds great! I had one and unfortunately sold it way back for unknown reasons...very solid performer!
