So I heard the led's on the Rising 20/20 don't really start working until you crank the volume up. That seems kinda lame to me. How common is this? How many other boxes are like that?
Just trying to build a list of boxes to avoid
The Crown 950 looks like it has the same LED's as the Rising, are they?

That isn't the case.....and I own two of them.
I don't know about the Rising - I do own a 950 tho... Regardless, that's a pretty "lame" reason to "avoid" buyin' one of the best boxes out there.

The Rising 20/20's leds are cool and they work just like the Conion C100F if the volume is low the led meters are low but as u raise the volume the led start piking up not like other boomboxes that the leds are going with the beat of the music when there is no beat cause the volume is low or all the way down Sony CFS-9000, Sanyo C9, Yamaha PC-9,Lasonic TRC-918, Tecsonic MX-900,Panasonic RX-A5, and many others the Leds work like the Rising 20/20..

ah ic what your asking now.......yes the are volume dependant......VU's that run all the time are ok I guess......so that must kill all the technsonics, conions then since they do the same thing. The LEDS are scaled to the output power of the power amps......which IMO are how they should be set up....so you know where the amps limits are.

OK, so then if it says "VU" on the box then it will operate all the time, but if it says "power meter" or "power level" then it's probably set up like the Rising?
it all depends on who designed the box.......the only way to know really is ASK someone who has the box you want and find out......But truely, VU stands for Volume Unit......in decibels.....which a logarithmic measure of sound level as perceived by the human ear over a non linear curve between 20Hz to 20Khz which is the accepted range of the human hearing.

You shouldn't get too caught up in terminology - it varies from box to box.
For instance, the 3 Lasonics I own state as follows:
TRC-920 - Output level
TRC-931 (1st edition) - VU sound level
i931 - Power
The TRC-931 is the only box of the 3 that is unaffected by how loud you crank the volume.
The Trident and Prosonic also operate the same way and says "Power".

The Lasonic L-30K is has VU Level meters that goes to the beat even if the volume is low but the disco lights the speakers carry they get brighter as you increase the volume so u get both distinctive set of lights with this boombox pretty cool. I think I know where your coming from... I really like boxes that have good sound production and solid bass at very low volumes.
Especially for use in my office where Im on the phone a lot... my point being, I want the box features to be working and usable loud or not!
From the boxes I listen to regularly that have meters:
JVC M70 "LEVEL METERS" are volume dependent
Sanyo M9990 "VUs" are volume dependent
Sharp GF-9191 "VUs" are signal dependent
Panasonic RX-5600 "VUs" are signal dependent
JVC PC-3 "PEAK INDICATORS" are signal dependent

Exactly, VU's are one of the things that make vintage boxes special, so why not show them off
