Hello
I like the look of the Toshiba 983 and think about to buy one. Who can tell me how this thing sounds? Is it a good sounding unit ...? Who own such a bbox?
Thanks and best wishes
TOM
tom - i could not find a #983 in the bbdb -
do you have a picture to post ?
or - in case its also a #98 = WX1
then YES -- it sounds very strong --so get it !!
It's the one with the 3-way speakers under the bbox. Here's a link to this bbox:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName...IT&item=110336135016Looks like a good sounding, high quality unit. How is the bass on this thing?
Thanks and best wishes
TOM
its not a bass machine, but it does sound good. It lacks loudness, and remember those are PASSIVE radiators, they are not actuall speakers. They add low end extension, but basically you have a tweet and a 5 1/4 driver......thats it.
hey tom -- kitts WX1 must be defective !!!
that model has a very effective variable bass boost control --and sounds terrific -all the way-
also - that price is very good-
i say //GO

I second this... last year a group of us heard Transamguy's WX1 side by side vs. an M90 and it was very impressive. It was not lacking in Bass at all. There was a room full of us who were all surprised by the effectiveness of the passive radiator system.
I highly recommend that box! If it works as it should, you will not be disappointed.
I have had one coming from ebay for TWO MONTHS!!! The seller only offered SEAMAIL at the time, and said 3-4 weeks... yeah right... has been 2 months so far... he now offers air mail (should of before).
I bought it from a guy in Austraila and it's shipping from Hong Kong... go figure!
Johnny
Tom, I sold mine - wasn't impressed. It's HUGE, heavy and nice to look at. But sounds like a small box. Like Chris said - mine lacked loudness - tape, radio and line-in....
oh vladi --i think we have covered all this on some other box problem in your recent experiences -
but this seems like another case where you had failed to operate the volume control !!!
well - its obviously a common error --
you must have sold yours to kitt -
and then even the great likes of HIM --
has not yet mastered it
thats cool oldy -
but speak up for the big bombeat !!!
in that enormous room - the WX1 along with your sanyo C9 - blew 10 members away -
including fatdog -
(who is normally difficult to blow away)
The WX-1 does have a rich sound to it. It will definitely surprise and please the ears. You won't go wrong.
Ok guys
All that sounds not real convincing to me - my experience with passiv bass radiators are not the best (like the Kenwood DC 20, Akai PJ-35) - if it isn't a aktiv one, it's not efficent enough ... so I think this is nothing me ...
Thanks alot to all of you
TOM

Tom,
This is a good sounding unit with nice sub frequency. It has a loudness level slider which gives added control in addition to separate bass and treble sliders.
It has a nice overall presence (not at all like a small sounding box). Just the opposite in fact.
Not the loudest box in my collection but has home system type sound quality.
Its amazing to me how many of these just sit on ebay at very decent prices.
I hope it sounds good, been waiting on mine for 2 months now from analoguesynth (sp?)! Crazy!!!!
Johnny <-has patience, but come on

Johnny,
Trust me if its in good working order you will love it.
Excellent build quality and awesome sound.
And if im not mistaken, that ebay seller is a member here.
Here are 2 pics from last years meet in Florida.
The first is of oldschool (left) and Ford (right)
Battling it against the Sanyo C-9.
and the second one was a token of appreciation from the gang that I still keep with the WX till this day.
Awesome! I am sure I will like it, just can't wait to get it.
The seller seems like a nice enough guy, I just wished he offered air mail when I bought mine (sea mail only back then).... Oh well, I am sure it'll show up...
Johnny
hifitom !!
are you still paying attention ???
and, frank - thanks for posting that great memory.
Tom...GET THE BOX!!!

Huh you think it's hard to wait 2 months for a boombox from far away Australia. Try waiting a month for a Panny RX-5350 from friggin texas only 900 miles away, that I still haven't got due to the damn postoffice......
Sorry ........I had to vent......
Acctually Skippy the seller is in Austraila and he ships from Hong Kong.. must have family over there... his real name is Sam Cheung...
Over a month from Texas!!!! UGHHHHH! Must be killing ya!
Tom, I have to say if you have this many informed people telling you to get it.... GET IT!
Johnny
Hmmmm ... if I gonne find one for little money, I will go for one ... Thanks to all of you, but:
I bought so many bboxes till now, great looking bboxes, just because people told me that they will sound great ... and most the time I was disapointed ... specialy from the Marantz PMS7000 and the Sharp GF-777 ... but I gonne give him a change ...
Thanks agains and best wishes
TOM
Referring to the competition we had at the Florida meet last year, I do think it should be said that the WX-1 was battling the C-9 at the bitter end because it beat two JVC M90s that were also on hand. And for some reason, I don't think the Telefunken Studio 1 that was there working properly, so it did not get put to the same test.
The only reason the Toshiba didn't win outright is because Oldy's speaker-modded pitbull Sansui C-9 was a tad louder in the mids and highs, so it was able to make itself heard over the Toshiba at max volume.
And this is not just my opinion, I think there were close to a dozen of us who voted on that. Just to eliminate any doubt about how we compared this, we had a minidisk player pumping the same music into both units at the same time via AUX in.
Personally, I thought the WX-1 was the best sounding box in the room. I understand that this may not mean much to you as you don't know my standards, but I promise you they are pretty high. And there were A LOT of boxes in the room.
I will eventually own a Toshiba WX-1.
Ok,
that sound's realy interesting to me ... in germany we say, "ich habe Blut geleckt" = I licked blood ...
Even if it's not my (sound-) taste, it's a beautiful unit ...
Thanks to all of you

That would be Sanyo C-9.
And as I noted before, the speakers matched sensitivity and resistance wise, (actually I learned later they are a tad less efficient so the system has to push harder to drive them) so for it to do what it did versus the others really did surprise me.
But yes, I see a WX-1 in my future as well. Hopefully soon!
HIFITOM you didn't like the GF777z either? That is one of my favorites! If it sounds close to a 777 I'll lick myself!!
just kiddin....maybe...
Johnny
Ya, nobody knows what happened with that Panny 5350....today is exactly one month since it's been shipped. Remember that when you're deciding how to ship stuff - don't use USPS....
Johnny, I used to own Toshiba WX-1, and I still have GF-777 - and I personally liked the sound of GF-777 better....
i use to own to a wx-1 as well but sold it...nice unit i loved the nice VU meters and it had pitch control.. but im not into 3 piece units...to me as well the 777 is better for many reasons...

WOW man im sorry but I have to disagree here.
I had a minty GF 777 and it was IMO not even close to the WX-1 sound or quality level.Heck I chose my JVC M-70 over the GF-777 when it came down to selling one or the other.
So many mixed reviews, I guess you either like them or not.
Keep in mind tho Tom I have tasted the likes of Telefunken and this has completely changed my standards of what a boombox should sound like.

Well, at least I got the fact that they both start with S right?
That was a surprising box, for sure.
