So lately Ive been saving time bbx hunting on ebay by only looking for a short list of personal grails...
Then I decided to just look at the whole enchilada of bbx currently for sale.
I saw a Minter that was calling my name... a Clairtone 7978 in Canada.
Member here possibly?
I searched it out here, and found quite a bit of info on them. Didnt realise they were the same as all those 20/20 boxes, just different grill/speaker designs.
Buy it now was $225 + $40 shipping.
Im totally stoked to get it!
But how on Earth was this thing STILL available?!
In this current economy, are 'B-list-grails', like this one; just not worth what I paid anymore?
I know... newbie question! 'Whats it worth', I should be ashamed!
I had a Rising 20/20 a year ago, again not knowing these were the same, but it never worked. So I dont know what to expect as far as performance.
Anyone here have one and care to tell me their honest thoughts, and or comparisons?
Thanks!
Above photo from auction...
lots of people are seriously hurting right now and now the reverse seems to be happening......more supply, much much less demand.......the US economy is in the toilet......its a shame really
Are we treading $300 M90 territory? I'm glad New York Dept of Sanitation's layoffs arent going to affect me.
On a side note: Since i was gonna sell my Sanyo M-X820K (Complete with mics, manual,a box to boot) to fund a highly desired box in the future, this current economy f'd that idea up.
Right...
Not sure if the top grails will ever come down much... There will always be well monied collectors.
This mid range though, seems to be slipping.
I think I over paid!
Oh well I say, they arnt making any more of these Clairtones, and EVENTUALLY the economy will pick up again!
I didnt buy it to turn and burn anyway...
So... No one out there has one of these that can give a review???
I just saw an M90 sold on Ebay for $900 plus shipping. Maybe it could sell for a couple hundred more a few months ago, but $900 is still not bad (or good, if you're a buyer)

265.00 shipping included is a decent price.
I paid over that for my minter.
Back when the economy was doing well I tried to sell it and couldn't give it away.
I ended up parting it out to restore my
Rising SRC-2015.
It is a nice size box, Lightweight ,sounds great with very decent bass. Very easy to work on.
Let me know if you need any parts I think I may have some left overs.
I don't worry too much about overpaying for a collectable boombox. It just means I have to wait longer for it to be worth what I paid for it
Exactly right!
Thanks T/A... I'll keep your offer in mind!
Pretty box! I've seen 20/20's go for more so I'd say maybe you went in a little high but as long as you're happy with it then thats what matters.
exactly with TA about the nice sound quality --
i case you are anxious to get a quick preview of 'how it sounds'
go see your semi-local buddy THAFUZZ --he bought mine
Hit up ol' Sinister - he bought my Yorx version.

TA's assessment is right on. They are not too heavy, really good overall sound with some thump.
I wish I had taken a picture of mine before I stored it, I've never seen another one like it. I think it was a demo model of some sort. Whenever I settle and move out everything from storage I'll post some pictures.
Not a bad price at all for one in minty shape. I think you'll really enjoy it, it's what the TRC-931 and their respective clones aspire to sound like in my opinion

Wow, didn't realize York badged a 20/20. Definitely their best offering by far
I have a couple of the Clairtone 7978's and they are great. I know the seller who you bought it from...he's a nice guy and i think his packing should also be very good. The price was good also

Demo model?!
Sounds interesting!
What was different about it that made you think that PanFan?
Cool! Thanks GSB!
You'll like the sound. It bumps hard. Good performer for sure.

Lovely...
Did you bleach your speakers Sin?
I had carefully bleached them way back when. It never affected the sound. However, I have since been edumacated by Freddie regarding speaker painting. The obtain the OEM white look, I have found that the best paint is Satin Dover White #2422 by Krylon. It's not the bright white that a Fisher boombox would have. It's got just enough creme color added to make it perfect.
If you think you'll give it a try on the Clairtone, I found that the cap for Testors decal bonder spray is the perfect diameter to cover the chrome caps.
fatdog -- THANKS for that cap tip -

will be infinitely helpful
Helpfull indeed!

Well, it's multicolored in the center display area, and I believe it has some additional text screened on it there as well. I really wish I had taken a picture of it before it got packed away.
I've looked at the 20/20 pics posted here and on Ebay auctions for about 4 years since I picked it up, and never have seen another like it.

Would love to see that when you get it out of storage!!!!!
Yeah me too!
I wonder if any of that 'extra' stuff on it could be replicated?
Using Fat Dogs pro abilities and all?
