which of your boomboxes can you turn up all the way without them crapping out.
i really have only one that i can turn up all the way without the sound getting dicy.
its not the loudest box but it is a very nice sounding box.
this would be my pioneer sk-95. its not the bassiest boombox i have or the loudest but it is really nice sounding.
i can almost get my sanyo m9998k all the way to ten but it craps out a bit towards the end.
the big sonys i have cant do it the get to crazy and well they kind of scare me when they are turned up. i almost expect flames to come out of them beacause nothing should be that loud that size.
The Hitachi TRK-9100 comes close, that thing just goes on and on.....
The Crown 5100 also, but mainly because it's not that loud and seems to be limited to a cetain volume which is way lower than the max for the speakers...
In contrast, I'd say one of the boxes you can turn up the least before distorting is the Sharp 575, disappointingly.

I love the PHILIPS "roller" bzw the "moving sound" series (see avatar).
It owns the spirit of holiday.
Best for relaxing...

Overall, there's nothing wrong with the i931... If you know what you're doin' and know how to hook it up, it could be a great sounding box.
Still, I've found that distortion kicks in once you raise the volume past 34.
Personally, I don't have any boxes that I can kick full blast without distortion 'cause either the highs start screaming or the bass breaks up.

I believe the JVC PC-55 is one you can crank all the way up.
Assuming that setting the bass/treble flat is ok, then there are several others.

I've REALLY gotta get one of those! Other than an M90, that's the only JVC I'm interested in.
the panny non-biamped platinum series
Keeping tone & EQs flat, loudness off, etc. many of mine make it to two-thirds volume OK, but sound very "shouty". To my ears, the last third on the volume generally just adds distortion without increasing volume.
On the better quality ones, if you turn the bass down, you can push further than two-thirds, but to me, the sound is worse without the bass.
When giving a boombox a good airing, I tend to set the tone controls how I like to listen & then push the volume as far as I can without any noticable distortion. I'm amazed at how early some of them run out of puff.
Amongst the best are definitely the decent Panasonics, esp my RX-DT 3pc.
The worst? the cheaper Hitachi 3Ds, of course

JVC PC-5 is close but the TPR-950 is a strong contender.
Don't let your ears be too forgiving just because you love your boxes. Personally most boomboxes 'crap-out' the moment you switch them on but crank them further than they were designed & you get into a world of trouble with poor quality drivers out-stretching themselves within a poorly controlled, flexible, acoustic space. Something has to give, that is if your ears don't first.
The only ones I have that can get close maximum volume without minimising absoloutely every control are the BigBen and Crown CSC-960F.
My TPR-950 gets up there too, but to be honest I've not tried going much over halfway volume with most of mine.. too scared of the 'pop' then death of the amps.
Rock On.

Very well said...
My Hitachi TRK-8190 sounds great at low-ish volume with the bass/treble set to a nice rich sounding level, but turn it up a bit and it gets very messy.
I don't understand why people ask this question.....its a simple basic amplifier question.
The volume knob is nothing more than a gain control. If your input signal is huge from the source, you'll only be able to turn it X amount before the amps are overdriven.
If the signal is extremely soft, then you would be able to turn it up all the way to the max to hear the sound.
And it finally comes down to, if they set up the sources correctly, then the volume should be around 70% of the maximum scale to achieve full volume with minimal distortion.
But hey, that's my opinion on the top..........
None of them.
Kittmaster, you nailed it. I was going to post a similar reply.
Depends on the source.
On New Years, I did have my HK 9000 hooked up to a mac book and cranked all the way. I used the computers level set @ a little less than 3/4, like kitt said, to acheive no distortion and boy it rocked the house!

Hi-The Fisher PH-D380!!
This thing rocks and it has multi-amps and has 6 speakers and it's just soo bassy and clean-you can crank it all the way up-no distortion!!
BTW-The JVC-PC55JW I've had up to about 6 and it's just nuts-It's loud!! No distortion but I wouldn't go any higher, the girl I was with even said it's just way loud-her little sister heard it far away!
So-This is the only 2 that I have that I dare even know about.
Have a great one-GB.

Toshiba WX-1
Crown 850
Can turn these up all the way with Tape or radio (built in sources).
These are not the loudest in the barn but have very decent volume level. Probably louder at max than I would ever listen too and they hold together nicely.
Panasonic RX-680 Platnum edition, No break ups once so ever, I love it
.
Actually, the Technics SA-CO5s can go very very loud before distorting (with the graphic at flat). But backing up what Kittmaster said, any box will go flat out max volume without distorting if the source level is low enough so it's fairly academic really.
