I am a jack ass. One of you folks suggested that I try a vacuum to un-pop my pushed in center caps on my GF-777. In my pea-brain I thought "If a vacuum is good, a 5 H.P. Shop vac is better"
You can all see where this is going...
I fire up the shop vac and slowly bring it towards the first pushed-in center cap. I get it fairly close...and it looks like it's working...the center cap starts to move. A second later -- POP! Suuuuuuucccckkk! the cap rips free from the speaker and disappears in the jaws of the shop vac.
What was I thinking?!?!?!
Hey, THAFUZZ - looking forward to receiving those replacement caps. I kinda need them now.
BTW - anyone know the best adhesive to use to glue caps to the speakers??
sorry tom
but thanks for this post // and saving my butt --
i was planning on that same moron procedure for my own dented cap !!
Hey tb it was either you or I!!
I was gonna try that next time I had damaged domes show up, if you want I think weelanddeal has two inside speakers for sale... dunno for sure...
as far as glue... I think almost any craft glue will work great!... when you think about it you're just glueing it to paper...get something that dries clear.
Johnny
scotch tape works great people.
Tried Scotch tape - it sort of worked. It was a bit tedious and I got impatient...hence the shop vac.
I tried a regular vacuum earlier in the week and it was not powerful enough to move the caps...hence the shop vac.
BTW - After I fished the cap out of the super vac, I noticed that it was impossible to get the crinkles out completely. I could get the worst of them out - but the cap still was not cosmetically acceptable.

I have a new vacuum cleaner,
has a varable speed on it,
there quite cheap too.
Starts out very slow to high.
Maybe that would be better.
.....sorry.

I bet that will work great... fire it up and slowly turn it up.... once the cap gets sucked off the speaker just back the speed of a touch. That'll do it.
yup --its important that the cap flies off at a variable speed
thats so kind , spud --
were it not for the few concerned members like yourself --
folks could care less about our dented caps
Dam Tom sorry to hear that My subwoofre caps are pushed in also.and I thot about doing the vac. Well guess I will go to scotch tape. Skippy, did you pull the caps on your gf1000 with tape?

OMG!!!
That was a riot Tom. Sorry, but you painted such a great mental picture of how it went down - I just busted up
. Yes my brother, I will mail them out tomorrow for sure. No worries. I'm still giggling (I can hardly type correctly). Now THAT'S situational comedy like "Mr. Bean" or "John Candy" where they try to repair something, and it gets worse & worse...

Classic!
I'm sure the funniest part was the look on my face when it happened. I am positive it was a classic look of dumb-founded, wide-eyed horror.
(Picture any number of those looks from a John Candy movie)
I am so glad that my tragedy provided hours of comedic relief
In shock and disbelief, I stood there looking down into the nozzle of the vac. Then to the missing cap, then back to the nozzle of the vac. I think I remember staring down the nozzle of the vac for a seemingly long while...as if I was waiting for the vac to give it back.

I don't own a GF1000 Ash.
I wished I did though.........
Geeez...that really
sucks!
Sorry 'bout that...I couldn't resist. But then again, I'm just sayin' what everyone else was thinking, lol!
Sorry to hear of your (or should I say, your cap's) misfortune.
Hmmm...5 hp shop vac., sounds like something Tim the toolman would have done...only with "more power"!
But all kidding aside, I hope you're able to remedy the situation.
I was just laughing so hard my dog barked at me...!!!
One of my Tannoy near field monitors (DJ booth) has a pushed in dust cap and I tried it with a regular vac once. It didn't help because the material is actually breathable. Thought about pushing in the other just so they match.
Good thing you have replacements on the way!
tburick, thanks for the entertaining post
If any other member here decides to try the shop vac thing PLEASE, PLEASE have someone film it and throw it up on youtube

Thanks for the laugh! I feel for ya tho!
Johnny
Alright Tom, I mailed you a new set of Chrome dust caps. You'll have them on the East coast in 3-4 days. I was gonna overnight them out of pitty, but they wanted over $15 for caps that weigh the same as a cotton ball. I laughed all the way to the Post Office BTW.
Peace.
you need to use a smaller vacume hose with less power and just get it close enough to pull it out without it making contact.
Jvcfloyd,
OK...you try that and get back to me. My idea sounded good too.
I am sure THAFUZZ has a few extra caps to send your way.

TOOOOO funny!!!!
Johnny
hahhahah...
Sorry Tburick but I just can't get that sucking sound out of mind!
Has to go down as one the funniest repair stories of '09! Can't wait to see how the rest of the year goes!
Good luck man! And thank goodness it didn't rip the speaker!
OK...just received two replacement caps from THAFUZZ (thanks brother!)
I feel a little jinxed with this repair. It involves glue...
I'm a little nervous...afraid something bad will happen - like I end up glueing my head to the carpet
If you guys do not hear from me in 24 hours - assume the worst. And please - someone stop by with hair clippers and free me.
23 hours to go
tom - give us a preview -----
how is the glue project going ??
That was super funny!!
Now Ira and I are waiting for the *happy s2g ending* of this story
Is it done yet? How 'bout now?... here we are joking and kidding and he's popping Prozacs with a bottle of glue in front of him! CRUEL!!!
It's okay Tom, YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Johnny
concave side faces down (usually)
"You can do it"- Tommy Boucher! Glued hair or not, I have another set if you glue the caps concave side down.
Glad you received the caps right away.
tom --to make sure the glue is try ,
and to test for secure adhesion----
take the box to you nearest tool rental shop-
borrow their industrial grade 7.5 HP vac.
remember to keep your distance
the rental fee will be reasonable-
as all you need is 1.5 seconds !!
report your findings back here.
then--
PM THAFUZZ
UPDATE:
SUCCESS!! Glued the caps on the speakers without incident. Well, not really without incident...let's say without MAJOR incident.
(sheepishly) I put my elbow in the glue
It leaked out of the tube onto my workbench.
After the glue dried, I borrowed a 12 h.p. leaf blower from the neighbor and rewired the engine in reverse. Stuck it within a half inch of the cap. I am happy to report that the cap stayed on. I sucked family photo's, plaster, and one of those kooky cat clocks of the wall...but the cap remained
Mission accomplished.
This is kinda funny .. I also used a vacume to fix a speaker like this but it was a weak vacume and I stay about 1 inch from the cap and used my hand to sort of make a seal and it worked . I tell you this because the whole time I was thinking it would pop off and get sucked into the vacume ! I was sooo nervous . I am glad it all worked out in the long run though .

Great job Tom. I knew I could get another laugh from you posts. Thanks
Hey THAFUZZ,
Thanks for those caps brother. They worked perfect.
Never belonged to an Internet community that was so POSITIVE. The members here really look out for each other...there's a lot of camaraderie and friendship here. I belong to a few scooter forums and several robotics forums...in all of those, you always have a small handful of nasty, negative people that seem to pull the whole forum down to that level. I've never seen it here. Just the opposite. This is hands-down my favorite forum. We have something special here!
