High expectations, sounded bad...low expectations, sounded great

Disappointed
Panasonic RX-DT37. OK, so it's an egg, but it arrived just as the cobra-tops were at an end & I'd hoped for some of the cobra-top gold from this b-box. Considering it was advertised 2 x 20W output, I expected more bass & "authority". Oh, it goes loud alright, very loud & it's clear & crisp sounding, but there's no... oomph.

Disappointed 2
If I had to nominate an older b-box for this it would be the Hitachi 3D30. A shame to report a 3D that I can't recommend. Smaller centre woofer, smaller amp, cheaper build - it all adds up to a b-box cashing in on it's predecessors good reputation.

Surprised
One word: Kaboom. After years of making b-boxes, someone at JVC found how to get copious bass from a free-standing portable. They weren't shy about it either...

Iso buy a telefunken studio it's better than the kaboom by a long shot it has the clarity with the bass.

Biggest surprise: Sharp GF-9090...blows the 9191 in bass department and overall sound.

Hmm, that's too bad, as the 9191 looks way better than the 9090 in my opinion. One of the most classic looking boomboxes.

if you dont want dissapointing sound guys bottom line, dont buy sharp.

jvc.floyd - 2008-09-01 10:16

sharps are good boxes just some of the speakers are dirt cheap and it kills the sound of an other wise good box ,i love the designs of the sharp boxes especially the gf 777 the gf 9696 the gf 9000 the vz 2000 are all great looking boxes and stand out from the crowd.they might not be the best sounding but the styling is sharp indeed and they do sound decent just their bark is worse than their bite.except the 9696 which does sound as mean as it looks.

Thing is floyd if you mod a box it's worth sod all so i would stay away from any sharp apart from the 777 and the 1000 unless you want to loose money or be dissapointed.

And some people complane even about the 777.

jvc.floyd - 2008-09-01 10:32

right on man but i buy for me not the resale value ,i guess it's a case of do i want i sweet looking box that sounds decent or an ugly box that sounds good some times i want both lol. but i think the sharps can be improved on and be totally awesome ,you cant do much with the ugly boxes even if they sound good .

Biggest surprises were the Panasonic RX-C52, Sanyo M-7700K and the Aiwa CS-660. The little C52 and 7770k sound much better than they should for their size. The Aiwa 660 was one of my first boomer purchases, I bought it for the looks but once I received it I was blown away, the sound quality really stood out and it still does after buying another 50 or so boxes.

Biggest dissapointments are the Panasonic SG-J500 and the JVC RC-550JW. The Panasonic is really weak on sound and smaller than I expected but It seems none of the 1-piece turntable boxes have great sound since vibration needs to be kept to a minimum. The JVC is really cool on looks and I'm glad I have one but the sound quality is not quite what you would expect.

I collect boomers for looks, personel connections to my past and then sound. I don't collect them purely for the sound since none can ever come close to a good home sound system.

It's a bit low on mp3 CD players, though...

In my opinion, an unmodded 777's outer woofers and tweeters sound terrible, lacking midrange and treble and generally sounding cheap. The super woofers (and the incredible looks of course!), save this box from lying on the scrapheap.

My GF-777 only sounds better than my GF-9000 in the bass department. Frown
