I have just * rediscovered * the wonderful sound of vinyl.
Bought a Radio Shack LAB-90 turntable off of ebay (designed as an add-on accessory the Realistic boomboxes). Turntable was sold as parts or repair...couldn't get it going due to a bent platter assembly. even though it couldn't be fixed, it got me thinking about vinyl. Did a bunch of research and found that two companies make PORTABLE, battery operated turntables! These units also run off of AC. Numark PT-01 and Vestax Handy Trax are the makes/models. Both of these units are great in the spirit of "portable" accessories.
I bought the Numark over the weekend. Hooked it up to my GF-777 and WOW! Forgot how GOOD vinyl sounds. Seems so much warmer that CD's. I dug out some vinyl I haven't played in MANY years and had a great time. I also ordered a few albums off of ebay. My favorite albums this weekend:
Blondie - Parallel Lines
Missing Persons - Spring Session M
Go-Go's - Beauty and the Beat, Vacation, Talk Show
Xanadu soundtrack (
ok, I know what all of you are thinking...but it really is a great album
)
The Numark was only $65 on clearance at The Guitar Center! The new model featuring USB is available for $99. The unit is a little on the cheap side and a bit quirky but it does the job. Would have paid $129 for the Vestax but could not find a local dealer.
Now I am REALLY in trouble:
SPOUSE: Where did this record player come from? And where did all these records come from? I don't remember seeing these before. ARE YOU STARTING ANOTHER COLLECTION??
ME: Um...well...I started listening to records again...and I needed a recorder player...and some of the records came from ebay...I had them delivered to work. (Thinking here that honesty was the best policy. Apparently not, by the response)
SPOUSE: You already collect radios, and robots, and cassettes, and scooter stuff, and a dozen other things. NO MORE COLLECTIONS!
Note to all of you with angry spouses - a big bouquet of flowers usually does the trick. Gets me out of trouble every time
I am now a happy collector of vintage vinyl
I am a vinyl junkie...nothing beats it

Great stuff Tburick! Ever since I started collecting radios I've been expanding my vinyl and tape collections too, they really go hand in hand, and make you appreciate the luxurious quality of analogue audio that is completely stripped from the mp3 rubbish that so prevalent these days.
Don't bother arguing/justifying your collections to your woman, they have a similar defective gene to us. Where we don't understand the seemingly meaningless things they worry themselves sick over, and there by come off as insensitive neanderthals, by the same token they don't understand our hobbies that involve passionate collecting of inanimate things that surely we can only possibly need one of.
But I'm sure everyone's worked that out already.
Rock On.
I too have a vinyl collection and still to this day I play them and just appreciate the sounds that they produce.

Yea, give her flowers for her flower collection
I've got about 3000 records... Love the sound of vinyl!
I know a guy here in Tampa that owns over 20,000 records, and my wife knows him too, so I don't catch so much he11 about my collection. Plus, they all pretty much paid for themselves (and then some) over the years from DJing.
About 2 years ago I bought Serato and some portable hard drives because new tracks on vinyl were getting more and more scarce and more and more expensive. Plus, the vinyl is heavy when schlepping it to a gig.
Nothing beats vinyl for purity of sound, though. Analog still rules supreme as far as I'm concerned.

2500 plus vinyl collector,vinyl rocks,love it
Yep , i wrote it somewhere here before.
NOTHING beats the sound of vinyl.
A tip. Try to score a Technics SL 10
I own one of these and the sound is extreme , even better than the SL 1210
I hooked up a Valve amplifier to this one.
Heavenly sound. It doesn't get better than this
And the SL 10 has a 12 Vold DC socket
i gone tons of vinyl i need to sell...and my comic books...
vinyl is fun. i have some records.
my favorite records are of course the ones i did.
yes its true there is nothing like taking a lp out of sleeve that your name is on. i mean so many people in this century released cds but very few pressed vinyl records. i am pretty proud of that. even more proud that someone actually made money off of records i made.
It is funny, I have vinyl and cd of some of the same thing and everyone I play them to, always pics the vinyl over the cd.
Now I am using a Denon DL160 phono cart. with a Project tube box II SE for my records.. Now before some people think, hey tubes... no wonder why,,... I am running a Jolida CD100 with rolled tubes so the cd player is also tubes.
It makes no difference if I am playing them on the carver amazing speakers, or the Polk SDA 2.3. Both sets of speakers, people can pick and perfer the vinyl every time.
Welcome to the new addiction!!! LOL
