The JVC RC-727 service manual is dated Oct 1977 so it would be around that date. I have a RC-727. I will fire it up and let you know what it sounds like.

Anyone know what year it dates to, or know how they sound

Tsssssss, you better not to speak about the sound of the boomboxes on here
What you REALLY want to avoid is asking how much one is WORTH. That'll get you in deep....
so did you fire up your 727 yet, we wanna know how does it sound?
I fired it up. It sounds nice and clear and would be good for general radio or tape listening. However it does not have anything to speak of on the low-end. I like using the meter for tuning and the controls are easy to use and are functional. My 727 still has the original hand-written sales sticker on the back. $249.
Thanks for the info....there's a 727 on Ebay that cought my eye, but at $150. for 'buy it now' it's just too much for me despite being a decent early box. The early units seem to be weak in bass response. I'm also looking for the Marantz Superscope CRS-1800 from 1976, but again I get the feeling the bass will be noticably absent when compared to better boxes from the 1980-84 era.
I paid $128.50 for mine... but I had not seen one on ebay for a long time. And it filled a hole in my JVC collection.
