JVC PC-5JW...Is this worth getting?

dumpstermyass - 2009-05-28 11:50

Hi Guys,

I came across this monster of a box today and I am wondering if this box is worth it at 50 bux..It is heavy, loud, with 2 SW bands and in/out jacks...The tape player works well and it is surprisingly clean...I would put it at maybe the late 80's, not in the "Golden Age", so to speak...

Would you grab it, or shall I let it go? It isn't going anywhere...Thanks for your input!

You better grab it quick!!! If you wait too late, it'll be gone!!! When I saw that Realistic Model No. 14-805 at a Yard Sale for $5.00, I jumped on it in a Heartbeat!!! Some people just don't realize the value of stuff until it's gone!!! There's the picture of it under my name here.

And just like the one you've had your eyes on, it's clean, everything works, just has a small crack by the tuning knob that can be sealed, but The Box still Kicks Butt!!!

Just think, it'll be something nice to show to your kids or grandkids, if you have any!!!

You mean this, right?

1981. A stellar find for $50 in the condition you describe.

Wow, is this box really from 1981? It would look a little more "retro", you'd think. If I can find a cheap digital camera I will snap up some pics of this and the other box I am expecting next week, which is the Hitachi TRK 8200 that Sinister is selling...

This vintage boom box collecting thing is addictive, BIG TIME!

I'd say it's from the '81 or '82 period also. Particularly with it's style and features. Most '70s Boxes are usually simple in design, not as large, and usually black, with either silver or gold highlights.

It's a nice Box though, looks like it Kicks Butt!!!

Hey guys,

I did some research, and this boombox came out around 1981, and was known as the JVC Quintet. They said it is extremely heavy, and the packed weight is 32 pounds! It has SW too...I got access to a digital camera this week so tonight or tomorrow I will slap up some pics of this beast...

I guess you're a little younger than I am. Folks my age or older will recall the ads for this. JVC did print and TV ads with the Harlem Globetrotters with this. This is a very well known box around these parts. It's a great mini system, one of the earliest quality mini-compo.

I do remember this add!! It was a box that was not the biggest on the block but damm it sounds good and has quite a kick to it.

Well, so far the radio is performing well but the tape player is screwy. I am going to see if I can get a schematic. It came with the Instruction manual, but I didn't check it for any diagrams in the back, which I doubt would be there...

Condition, otherwise is about an 8. Its a little dirty but I did some cleaning and got it looking better. It's too heavy to carry around, so I took my Panasonic home and took the Quintet to work, where it will stay until I can figure out how to fix the tape player...
