They are quite impressive.
Nice for a night stand or any room you want to fill with some nice warm sounds.

The JVC HyperBass models use the same type of 'wave guide' technology as these Bose models.

I guess the yuppies are still ahead Big Grin Big Grin

isolator42 - 2008-08-20 03:53

I'm on the lookout for THE yuppie b-box from way back when - the Beosystem 10

enskanker - 2008-08-20 05:11

Saw one of those on ebay US maybe 6 months ago....nice condition and all that as I recall.

Would you use it in you bathroom, Iso? DCM4U says his bathroom sounds best with a Bose, not a B&O.

Smile
This has the potential to get nicely silly...

Nah, my little Sansui is still king of the bathroom.

If I'm right, I'll nominate myself for Pedant Of The Week on this one, but I think the JVC Hyper Bass system uses a 4th order band-bass system & not a waveguide (or transmission line) system, like the Bose stuff. The give away is the fact that the woofer in a Hyperbass system is completely hidden, with just the port on show (similar to Hitachi's ASW system in later 3Ds). In a waveguide system, the front of the woofer cone is exposed.
...I know, I know - like anyone gives a flying f... Smile

Your Box is now Flying to Germany, too....

transwave5000 - 2008-08-20 09:44

Well the hyperbass unit I have I noticed that the driver is actually in the back of the unit.
You can see it through the vents.
Kinda like a reverse-waveguide where the back is the front, front is the back ???
There is another internal inclosure for the wave guide.

Now that IS interesting (no, really... well it is to me). I thought I remembered someone taking one apart & there being a plasic box with only a port output (I could be wrong - it has been known... Smile). If anyone has pics of a JVC HyperBass b-box in bits, now's the time to step up...

prime - 2008-08-20 10:39

Here's mine. Its a Bose CS-2010 with
AM/FM auto reverse cassette and digital tape counter.
It takes 10 D cells in the bottom.

These were about $1000 new and they sound like it too!

reli - 2008-08-20 22:35

Back in like 1991 I interviewed for a job with them....Actually it was just a subcontractor that went door to door selling those things. Apparently Bose didn't want to do the dirty work themselves. Needless to say I passed.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-20 22:43

why ?

- 2008-08-21 02:32

Have you ever sold anything, Door to Door? Wink in regards to selling a battery pack for a expensive & strange looking radio Wink

isolator42 - 2008-08-21 04:26

This surely qualifies as a b-box: batteries, tape, radio, even a carry-strap. It's not conventional looking, but nor is a Kaboom...

In which case this simply HAS to be the most expensive b-box I've ever seen with only a tone control...

erniejade - 2008-08-21 05:56

Prime, how does it do against the pioneer? The ribbon tweeters on that thing must be sweet!! I love ribbon speakers!

i got one it is too bad you were not in the usa. I would ship it to you. Shipping to the UK would be more then what it is worth.

YES--- great question -
and prime may be the only member lucky enough to know the answer Smile

Bose's AW-1 model had separate bass and treble sliders.
Later, on the CS-2010, they combined the two sliders
mechanically into one slider. It works like this:
Slide to the left to cut bass. Slide to the right
to cut highs. You don't have the same freedom with
this control as you would with separate controls. Bose
limits the amount of customizing you can do for a reason.
The sound is already well-balanced. I'm a big EQ fan myself
but this box doesn't need it.

The Pioneer and the Bose are are among the best sounding in my collection.
The ribbon tweeters have that traditional metallic sound to them.
Both boxes have enough bass to vibrate the floor. Its tough to pick
a winner between the two. They are very different sounding boxes.
Both are champions in the sound department.

The Bose consumes 80 watts while Pioneer consumes 70 watts.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-21 09:28

I Agree with prime about the perfect balance --

mine is the older model that does have separate bass and treble controls --
and to a great surprise --this box sounds awesome--

no matter how these controls are adjusted !!

------------------
and no offense meant to any member --but outside. in the bathroom or anyplace --

that big jvc 550 sounds like a oversized BORING hunk of 10 inch puke compared to this bose model

enjoy Smile

enskanker - 2008-08-21 09:39

Well I'm offensive, and not just in my bathroom.

and not only that, who is BOSE to tell us we can only have one slider, pugh!

PS...rbj, please pack well before shipping your unit to me, its no good in all that rain.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-21 09:57

well - i have already hyped $$$ this POS bose job way too much -- Smile
uncle ed has dibs -
