just been given for free a JVC ac power adapter - jvc aa p44e - not the best condition but thanked the old man down the road for given it to me, bless him - but what the hell does it do ? not to clued up on this sort of thing

Use a voltage meter. It will be either AC or DC voltage at some value.

It is a power adapter for an old U-matic JVC VCR .... CR-4400 series I believe
