Hi everyone-I had to ask this: Is there a Digital Audio Tape boombox(DAT)??
I've never seen one or heard of one.
I thought if there is it must be maybe a high-end unit.
If anyone knows anything on this let me know.
Thanks & have a great week-Ghettoboom777.
My guess would be "no". I'm not even sure that commercial recordings were ever released on DAT, unlike minidiscs. It would definitely make for a cool concept.
There was that odd 3 piece a while back, was a Yamaha or a Sony I think, it didn't have a record feature yet cost the earth. I think someone suggested it could've been used by record labels demo bands tapes to executives or stores or something.
Could it be possible a DAT version was made that was only used in the recording industry? Much like the DAT walkmans that were released.
Just an idea anyway.
Rock On.

Hi Fatdog-I think that there was some recorded DAT tapes because about 10 years ago I was looking into getting a home deck and I believe that there was some recorded tapes but very few.
I may have to doo some research on this.
Thanks for your replies-Ghettoboom777.
Pre recordet DAt tapes do exist!, they are
rather expensive these days
I believe they did make them for the DAT walkmans
Back then I had a Tascam DAT deck but I don't think there was ever a DAT boombox. Maybe a portable recorder such as the ones news media would use.
I've never seen a DAT boombox. Just Walkman-like portables.
Walkgirl is right about prerecorded DAT. I have a few. In fact, just picked up a Smiths prerecorded DAT a couple of weeks ago. Good for playing in DAT Walkmans and home system decks.
I think Sony once had high hopes for the DAT (and MD) (and Philips with their DCC), but no go. Too close on the heels of the CD revolution to be a viable format for precorded music. People were still replacing their record collections with CD's. They weren't going to do it again.
But as a live recording format (especially for remote locations), they say DAT was/is perfect. Apparently in some places it's still used for studio/location recording.
I do known there are minidisc boomboxes!, and
walkmans, there are dcc walkmans, dcc home stereos
and dcc car stereos, but no dcc boombox
And I think I will get me a dcc walkman this year
or so
Oh yes, there are also re recordet dcc's, rather
many of them, I even believe there were more titles
on dcc then on minidisc and DAT!
Right again, WG!
I have a Casio MD boombox. It's an egg, but a it's still a boombox.
No dcc boombox, but walkmans, car stereos and home stereos.
Lots and lots of prerecorded dcc's, although I think maybe there were more MD's, since Sony stuck with the format for so long... even longer in Japan. But my opinion on this is just based on my own experience. I have tons of prerecorded MD's, but only a dozen or so dcc's. I believe they were discontinued before the MD.
You have dcc walkmans???
I almost want to see a picture!
When you look on the Dutch
Marketplace and type
in dcc, there will be many many things to find!
even more as on ebay!

Hi walkgirl & everyone-Thanks for all the info on this!
I'll bet over in Holland you have alot more (maybe) cool high-end recording media stuff!!
For one your in the home of the some of the best vinyl made-Phillips!! I have some rare H.Q.Pressings form Holland on Phillips-they're incredible!
Also you have some speakers over there that I have much to my delight in my B.M.W.-DyneAudio!! These speakers are so sweet!!
you guys over in Holland make some serious Vinyl,Tape and of course Transducers(speakers)-some of the best quality so it doesn't surprise me that you have more pre-recorded music in those formats.
So thanks for all the info on this-A DAT boombox-now there's something that really would be rare if there is one? It looks like there isn't.
I'd love to see a mini-DAT boombox if there is one.
Show us your pic's!
Have a fantastric week-Ghettoboom777.
The Closest thing I have seen to a DAT Boombox, is a DAT recorder which was an optional component for the Sony FH series .... So technically not a Boombox

Then we're even, since I can almost remember where mine are.
(I have two [if I remember correctly], a Panasonic and a Philips [the same unit with different names]... the two makers of dcc.)
My best recollection is that they're in a closet that's underneath my basement stairway, which is packed with stuff and very hard to negotiate. I've dug through it before and unearthed things like my first boombox and an early Sanyo component vertical CD player (which no longer loads CD's
), so finding stuff in that closet is possible. But I have to work up the courage to disassemble everything and then reassemble it when I'm done. Unfortunately, that kind of courage doesn't come along very often.
