Is she dead Frown

digging in the dump bin and saw the back of it - got it out and knew it was 8080 ! but my heart sank when i saw what she looked like - got it home - it powers up but no cassette and the radio is not picking much up due to the ears being broken off but there is sound there and coming from both speakers ? top plate mashed up - plastic cracked - tape top missing - handle gone !

so is it worth keeing for parts - i do have another nice clean 8080 - tape player not working, so just wondering if i can use parts from donner ? haven't opened it up yet as i don't really know yet what i'm doing tec wise Frown

let me know what you should think i should do with it ?

cheers B Wink

If you already have one in good shape, I would keep this one for spares, definitely. It sounds like it might be fixable, but the cosmetic issues will be a bigger challenge...

if you can measure the handle i may have a sharp box that you could rape for the handle for cheap

cheers billy Wink but i think thee is too much work for me to do on it - or that time allows Nod Yes

so i think i will keep it for spares or so Wink

always a shame when one is close to the end Frown

FrownBendycat, I know you may hate doing this. But you may have to do to that Box, what they did to Ol' Yella in that old movie.

Take him out to Pasture and put him out of his misery........................ Frown

But then again, ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE!!! Nod Yes

well theres that or you can think of it as this:

"you have to break eggs, to make omelettes"

you knows its it true

isolator42 - 2009-06-17 08:17

yeh, if it helps other boxes to live longer & all that...

majestic - 2009-07-03 17:05

Or you can give it to me...Lol Big Grin

It's FREE so you can't beat that. If you ever feel like it's just taking up room and don't think you'll ever use it, I'd keep the knobs, cassette motor, heads, battery cover and speaker drivers. Those don't take up much room but they can fill in nicely if it's what you're missing on another box. BTW, I could use knobs like that so if you don't need 'em, I could always use spares...

bendycat - 2009-07-04 09:33

watching another on ebay - if i win that, then i should be able to make a complete one work Wink

every time i go to the dump or have a box to throw away, i'm taking the knobs and bits off old boxes and getting a collection goin - i will have a sale thread to see if i can help other member find there missing knobs (that just don't sound right when reading that back Eek Laugh Out Loud)

Hey BC,
I am not here much cuz I stay so busy with work and the family, but I would like to say "welcome"
to u. Love your avatar!! Big cats rock!!
More to the point, I really like the box u found even though it seems beyond repair...what model did u say it was? The style is what I really dig and seemed to be popular with my friends and schoolmates in the early 80's. just curious mostly...I am not very tech savvy with this stuff at all but I do love boomboxes.
Peace!!

Hey BC. I forgot to mention this but there are 4 IC's on the board and those are obsolete, unobtainium, non-existent anymore. If someone needs a set, their mainboard is likely toast unless they can find a set.

You'll do the hobby a great service by salvaging those IC's just in case you decide to part it and toss. The IC's are small single-inline devices and should be carefully desoldered to keep from damaging them.
