Hello there, I am fairly new to this site and needed a little help out there. I got this second box and wanted to know if anyone has some info on it. It has some cool colors and a digital clock/tuner. I have another one that looks just like this one expect it has no digital clock/tuner. Does anyone know the year of this box and any other info?
Hey, really nice box.
Colorful!
And a strange combination.
Digituner/Clock , but analog VU´s
Interesting!
That looks like a pretty darn nice unit.
I found one which is somewhat the same shape & Size. My guess is about 1985-87. Mine has LED meters, wide sound funtion, 3 band EQ. At first I thought....JC Penny, oh no, gotta be a junky box, but I actually like it and the quality is as good as many other brands - For $10. at a junk shop, it works 100%.
I've been wondering who the manufacturer was on these mid 1980's JC Penny boxes ? Anyone ?
Here a pic of my other unit
I like this one better than the one with the digital tuner. I also didn't get it but it was only 3 bucks!

These are actually pretty big boxes, dimension-wise. Unfortunately, the size doesn't translate to good sound. They easily distort, but if you keep the bass flat they sound fine. the tuner was so-so.
84-85 was when I recall seeing these in the stores.
A shame about the sound: they are actually deep boxes, and a good baffle design, decent amplifier board and good speakers would have really cranked well inside of a shell this size.
I picked up the one in your top picture about 5 years ago, and sold it shortly afterwards. I bought my JVC RC-M70 the same week, and that box thoroughly dominated the JCP in all aspects.
It's in my top five for all bark, no bite
Ooh, I like, I like!!! 5 Band EQ and everything!!! I'd love to take that to Times Square and see how many Cats I can get to Break Dance to it!!!
YUMMY!!!

That's correct about the sound quality. The tape decks do not work on both these boxes but even I connect my mp3 player through the in- line the sound could be better. I still don't have any JVC's (which I'm hoping to find next) just these two which are my biggest and many Sanyos and Panasonics.
Lovely looks.
Wasn't this an aka boomer from a major manufacturer like Sharp or Sony?

Wow, about $500 for this box! I feel fortunate to have paid just $4 for the first one and $3 for the second one at the Thrift. Thanks for the info!
I hear ya, Chiplayer!!!

I bought the NEC version back in 1985 and it cost £129 if I remember correctly.
The sound quality was indeed pretty poor bass-wise and the aerials broke off the posts very soon after I bought it.
