Börny very kindly pointed me to a German auction for one of my personal grails (my own first radio cassette), a Philips AR070 or 073.
I duly contacted the seller & asked if he would ship to the UK. He kindly agreed, so in my first bid goes.
A couple of days later, someone else bids in. Fair enough, so I go for a relatively insane max bid of 50 Euros, to make damn sure I get it. Remember this is a pretty unremarkable mono radio cassette.
A little later & I've been outbid again! I can't believe it, but I've been waiting *years* for one of these to show up so I fling caution & financial sense to the wind & recklessly bid 100 Euros.
I'm winning at €51.50, so OK, things are back on an even keel again.
Come Sunday, the other bidder has gone to over €100 to win it?!
bonkersThis is a truly astonishing amount to pay for such a radio. Just my luck to come up against a millionaire who wanted the exact same radio as me.
Well at least he's got one now...
Oh thats bad for you Isolator42 looks like its not only your personal grail, but i think you are lucky again, ViennaSound found one for you at a fleamarket .
Why do you bid so early? It does not make sense to bid at all until the last day/hour/minute/second, and then the most you want to spend. All you do is give someone else time to change their mind and bid higher.
I first bid small to stop the seller pulling the auction.
The i had to bid early as I knew I wouldn't be near a computer the entire day that the auction was due to end.
Otherwise, you're right, last second sniping might've got this one for me!
It's just such an unremarkable radio, I didn't think anyone would be that interested...
...Now Börny, what's this about Viennasound finding one?
Once again, many thanks my friend
Yeah it make sense to place a small bid just so the auction does not get pulled. That has happened to me lots of times.... I also understand if you cant be by your computer. Basically I meant that it does not pay to get into a bidding war. Better to drop the "bomb" at the very end.
Sounds like your story has a happy ending though!
use a
snipper if you bid you max at the last second it will kick in - but it all depends if any one else is bidding and how much, but stops that trying to get refresh and bid at the same time while your computer loads up
well, all said & done I've had a lucky escape, as Viennasound has found me one of these at the flea market.
I'm as happy as a pig in poo
