Hey Kids, a little while back there was a thread posted about seller xd62 selling a few GF-777's from China. As I mentioned, I actually bought one for $699. There was a discussion about the possibility of them being fake or reproduced. I offered to be the guinea pig and buy one and, you know what? It's awesome. My tech checked it out and there is nothing fake about them. Many S2G members mentioned that the seller probably came across a lot of them and is selling them off. Seems to be true. There were only a few minor descrepencies on mine; volume static, line In/Out module defective, tuner dial offset, tape counter stuck, right side tape deck sounds a little muddy, no AM radio reception, sticky left side cassette door. Other than that, which are all reparable, the unit is a cosmetic 10, and sounds AMAZING. Although the unit was describe as "TOP working order, he agreed to a $200 discount, which I think is fair and have accepted. I tested the unit with Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and "The Way You Make Me Feel". I heard things I never heard on these songs. This unit needs to be played at over 6 volume to be appreciated. GREAT UNIT. All in all I payed $499 and it is worth every penny. Don't be worried, the guy is good and you will get it. Shipping is included and comes in about 3 weeks. Cheers, let me know if any of you Cat's have any questions.
Back in the Saddle and clean, Paul
Look forward to pics of your new box.....
As soon as the Sun comes out I will post a few pics for you and everyone JD3
I was one of the members that highly doubted any possibility of "fake" or "counterfeit" China boomboxes. The item is simply too complex and costly to counterfeit to sell a few units here/there. To be profitable and pay for the tooling, they'd have to sell in large quantities and that is not happening.
I'm glad your guinea pig experiment ended positively for you. But $699 was a pretty big sum to put at risk and with all the problems you've noted, not exactly a bargain. However, if the cosmetic condition is good, I guess it's worth it because that is the one thing that you can't really fix. $499 for a cosmetic keeper sounds interesting, but just out of curiosity, what is your tech charging you to fix all those things?
My first GF 777 i bought came from China too.
It worked prefectly. I only changed the belts and gave it a good cleaning.
A bit later i bought another one ( European version)
They are exactly the same with the exception of another powercord connector and LW instead of SW 2. And a black color on the tuner dial instead of the blue
Hey Stormin'
I'm looking at about $75 US to fix the small problems with the box. But honestly, $499 US plus a buck to fix it, and it's near mint is worth it to me. There is a GF-777 bidding at about $350 US right now on Ebay, and mine is way better cosmetically.

Sounds like a good deal to me. $499 is way more paletable than $699 + problems. Glad it worked out good for you. Your tech is giving you a great deal for the work he's performing for you -- you should give him a hug.
