Is this Philips a boombox?

jovie - 2008-08-02 20:18

As we all know,a unit must have either a handle or carry strap mounts to be a boombox by definition.I'm not sure this Philips qualifies. What do you think?

oldskool69 - 2008-08-02 21:09

It appears to have grips on both sides of the main housing to carry it versus a standard handle. Smile

Nope .... even though I have 4 of these with cd's in them ...
I only consider a True boombox; being a Boombox
that DOES not have a cd player in it
Line in input's & output's sure but no actually
cd player in it as most of the
Boombox's that I have played my music in that had a
cd ,,, I Always try to play my Boris Midney cd in it & the cd skipped
as the bass of that music made the box skip the cd ....
SO Nope it's not a Boombox :-) unless it DOESNT Have a cd in it ...
Only Cassette's in a True Boombox as CASSETTE's RULE !!!! :-) James

DM4U-I respect your opinion. That is the kind of input I was seeking. However,I personally feel it qualifies if it plays some form of recorded media-which it does.

oldskool-This boombox was quite large. It could have passed for a shelf system had it not been designed for batteries and had attachable speakers. However I have a smaller version in this series that I'm quite sure the company would have considered a boombox. It has the same "grip" areas that could merely pass as part of its styling.I personally like a clear cut definition for everything.Unfortunately, thats often times not realistic in the real world unless there is a desire to tighten up loosely used terms.

One interesting thing about this box was the Turbo-Bass Generator. You'll notice in this picture that there is no pass through for the air displaced by the woofers when the speakers are attached. For this reason it couldn't function as a port. When I saw this I just laughed figuring it was a gimmick much like a fake hood scoop on a car. After I left the store I began to consider the possibility that the main unit actually has a subwoofer inside at the very bottom to take advantage of this port.Has anyone actually seen that in a boombox.

Has anyone actually seen that in a boombox?
yes Many times in some of the panasonic's specifically
Panasonic RX-C38 XBS Extra Bass System and

jvc's Specifically JVC PC-V55 with Hyper-Bass

jovie - 2008-08-03 07:15

Interesting...There was certainly no downward firing woofer visible on the units bottom.I thought that all of the extra bass features merely took advantage of tuning the ported speakers through tone adjustment...or something similar. Also I thought anything at the bottom of the main unit was usually just for styling whether its a port or printing suggesting an extra driver.Perhaps I need to be more adventuresome and open some of these boxes.

0. OOOh Boy... ( A ) has 2 speaker's {visible} little woofers inside the main cabinet of a 3-piece system and the seperate speakers do-not have porting from them back to the main cabinet

... and ( B ) has a single speaker like above ( a ) { not visible }

2. yes some do via a extra switch and or slider ( eq ) or both to achieve the more bass effect
3. could be?
4. Definately YES !!!

Sound like more of a problem between the ears than anything else.....

I have several boomboxes with cd players, and they all work fine for me.

In your case Jovie, there is no carry handle. Doesn't mean that it couldn't be a boombox, but I wouldn't describe it as one since there is no practical way to operate and carry it at the same time.

Oddly enough James, the first Hyperbass models featured cd's and cassettes. The PC-V55 is a budget model.

transwave5000 - 2008-08-03 19:35

It dosent have a proper "boombox" type handle.
Just not portable enough, that would be a major point right there.
Also the cd and its 3-piece might be an issue too.
More like movable mini stereo that can use batteries.
Its on the outer fringes of being a boombox.

isolator42 - 2008-08-04 09:09

That extra lump on the bottom is likely to contain an extra woofer tuned to fire out of the port at the front (like JVC Hyper bass). There's a switch & light for it on the left, by the volume knob. I guess the connections for it are between it & the main unit (no external wires like the L & R speakers).
It also appears to be removeable (but not without tools). Maybe this part only works on AC power?

No CDs on a b-box? ...nah.
PFs idea that it's b-box if you can carry it whilst playing music covers most bases with one simple concept: it's "stereo2go"
...or mono Smile

transwave5000 - 2008-08-04 20:33

I guess thats the point if you include the history of the boombox there were no CD in them.
So the CD-boombox would be a later development.
And the 3-piece-boombox too.
There is no one way to look at it.
Maybe there should be a boombox scale or rating system. Big Grin
