The Beatbox 0.1 - Rambunction **Update 16.12.08**

beatbox - 2008-12-10 16:04

Here we go folks.

Have been very very busy recently with my new job. I build models for architects and work on average 10 hours a day. However, I still think of radios, a lot, and have always wanted to design, and build my own radio.

I recently drew up some designs which I secretly showed to Bobby A.K.A Fatdog, the only other St2go member to know about it, and I believe with JLF's thread on producing a new/old box, that it is now the time to introduce what I am will be building.

This is based on 3 of my fav boxes. The Unisef SL5100, the Hitachi TRK8200 and the Toshiba Bombeat 40.

Called the Rambunction, it has all the looks I adore about boomboxes, and is my ultimate box.

It is very much in the first design stages, so there may be a lot of things that seem out of place, not necessary or just fine. Please, any advice, comments and opinions are very much welcome.

I hope you guys like it.

Oh yeah! Im stoked on this!

Put me down on the list for one! I'll need it signed by the 'cut creator' with a paint pen too! Wink

What size are you thinking with this?

beatbox - 2008-12-10 16:14

Thanks guys!

By the way, welcome back gsbadmr!

I'm thnking around the size of the Unisef/Bombeat 40.

My favourite size for a boombox Wink

The extra thick speaker trim will make the speakers look HUUUUUUUUUUGE!

oldskool69 - 2008-12-10 16:22

Very nice start indeed! And regarding extra thick speaker trim, what about extra thick speakers? Big Grin

True! But the size of the box ultimately limits the size of the speakers.

Anyway, some detail -

As you can see, the tuner details aren't finished as yet.

That design is beautiful while being fierce looking and imposing at the same time.It has the critical design elements of classic era blasters while still somehow looking up to date and hi-tech in style.Personally I like the "Beatbox" label on the front.I've always liked that term anyway. Can we assume that it is a "Beatbox" brand and the model is the Rambunction 0.1?That would be KILLER!I want one NOW!!!

ford93 - 2008-12-10 19:19

It's a wonderful design but some VU's would look wicked on it Beatbox. Nod Yes

redbenjoe - 2008-12-10 20:12

agree with ford re 2 VUs

are your target woofs -- 6, 7 or 8 inchers ?

btw -- gorgeous design Smile

baddboybill - 2008-12-10 20:28

I like it, maybe a larger tuning dial, but looks awsome Big Grin

master.z - 2008-12-10 20:32

Looks good, but please dont forget the dual antenna!

Peace,
Paul Z.

thafuzz - 2008-12-10 23:48

Chrome! More Chrome bits and pieces on a black box. Big Grin The other guys beat me to the "VUs" suggestion. I think it looks very cool and serious business too. Are you thinking 8" woofers? I'd be down for one too. Nod Yes

beatbox - 2008-12-11 02:32

Thanks for the input guys, Well, VU's are gonna have to be a serious consideration here. I'm sure we could make room for them someplace. The LED's under the tweets do act as power meters too, so maybe having both would be overkill? Anyway, good suggestion. As for the aerials, don't worry they are double and definitely are part of any boombox worth its salt.

As for the name Jovie, and thanks for your comments, the '0.1' part is the actual model number. The 'Beatbox' part, the brand, and the 'Rambunction' part just a sub name.

So, the next would maybe be the 'Beatbox 2.0 - Spinethief'

The speakers are gonna be 8 inchers. Any more, and thats just silly I think!

And as for chrome Adam, I think I would like this at the most a brushed aluminium. I do like my chrome, but this is a nod to the Toshiba Bombeat 40, the JVC RC550 and the Palladium (model no.?)

Thanks again folks!

devoltoni - 2008-12-11 03:10

Great job beatbox, I like that design.

3 suggestions:
-I think that the radio scale maybe is to short.

-The number in the model name is overmuch modern (like some version of software "0.1"),
maybe will be better to put some number like "101", "001" or "201".
Comment for the last number "201": Number "2" is mark for the "Stereo" and 01 for the "first box".
This is for I hope that you will designed maybe some mono box which mark then will be "101" Big Grin Big Grin

-Third and I think most interesting: beatbox, if it's possible, try to invert the colors on the box,
I mean, where now is black to be a silver, and vice versa, with some exception. I can't wait to see that.

Anyway, the box looks fantastic. Nod Yes

gluecifer - 2008-12-11 03:11

Excellent design Beatbox, lots of homage to the classics, but it still looks fresh and clean.

Can't wait to see more drafts for this project.

Rock On.

smokinendo - 2008-12-11 12:43

Now THIS is SOMETHING I could see happening and for all the right reasons Smile Nice work BB I love it and hope to see it come together

Brian

kid.sensation - 2008-12-11 12:57

now that's something mirko!!

love it!

the 4 "screws"/dots around the speakers..they would make a perfect spot for inserting some grills , like say on the 9696?
that would make it look classy and smooth with grills on and agressive without Smile

still looks great with the grills the way they are.

looking forward for the updates!

beatbox - 2008-12-11 13:10

Hey Felix, now that's something I didn't think about and of course, will appeal to different people too!

Great suggestion.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

Can we add HD radio and a remote? And also, USB/card reader - I'm already half way in 21st century - I'm used to those Big Grin

ak74 - 2008-12-11 13:57

...or a digital tuner Wink cause the tuner of the SZ5100 is really bad...

GREAT DESIGN Cool

Just a try: Big Grin

cause I`m a cross-double-needle-meter-fan...
...but maybe I`m too nostalgic....

jovie - 2008-12-11 19:15

I agree with vlad about the HD radio and USB port. This would require a small window for HD frequency display. As much as I like VUs,your design is stunning just the way it is.The gray with black insets works nicely with the brushed aluminum rims. The rims are a perfect width.Your careful layout of switches and lights doesn't make the short tuner window a problem to my eyes.It all looks very good! But please TWIN ANTENNAE!

I just really LOVE the "Beatbox" brand name!Even if for only this reason this project must happen.....but go into production also as I really want one! Nod Yes

I`m very disapointed by the kaboom`s digital tuner:crap,no mon switch at the box(only on remote),and a very bad reception, not to compare with the tpr tuner which is exellent... Wink

tpr - 2008-12-11 19:50

even the photographic negative looks much better than any white lasonic version:

thafuzz - 2008-12-11 22:29

Update 1. Have booked some time with one of the guys I worked with to cut all the pieces which will make up the outside of the box using a process very similar to lazer cuting. The machine we use employs a drill which will cut any shape you program it too. Knobs, grills, box, handle, plexiglas panels etc.

Choosing black mdf. This is MDF that has already been blackened before being formed. It is black all the way through.

Will hopefully get some test pieces done by the end of the week.
