Too Good for the Hood

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 13:25

todays sermon is about the both kinds of fun we can have with these 'things' Smile

i cant really diss all you minty members ---

not much in the box world is better than to start unrolling a mile of bubble wrap -
and then it becomes slowly apparent --
that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the cosmetics -- LIKE BRAND NEW !!!

and then -- we give it the quickie 20 minute function trials -- and everything works LIKE NEW !!

cool.

the only little problem is -- THEN what do we do ?? Big Grin

-------------------

the other fun --is when we have a mostly working POS --

like - the 'intended' purpose of a boombox is/was a social deal ::

go out in the streets and have big loud fun with lots of friends --share the noise along with some cool tunes.

down here in florida -- this time of year-- the night time weather is perfect --everybody is here and all are out and about --

so its a nightly blast --to cruise all over the hood -- in an open cart or bike --
with a conion or a discolite flashing and blasting --
and secured with bunji cords -- like GHETTO Smile

------------------------
for me --these gigs have been $$ expensive :
lets call it stupid fun--

have bashed in over a dozen grills ,
broke an M90 eject button Mad Smile
lost some battery covers --
and countless toggle switch covers,

so - our boxes are not so durable Smile
-------------------

and which boxes do we LEND OUT !! to a pack of crazed (stoned) Big Grin teenage surfer dudes for the long weekend keg parties Laugh Out Loud ???

still -- the ones that get really used --are the only ones that get really enjoyed (imho)
------------

below are a few dead on balls mint boxes that i was lucky to get from some 'prominent' Big Grin -members
love 'em -- they are both on top shelves --and they get stared at every day --

but -nobody is allowed to touch them (but me)--
and its even shakey when i 'excersise' them---
they hardly have and fingerprints !!!

--------------------
anyhow --the point of the story is that we should be soooooooooo rich !!!--
to have mint boxes --and then a street beater for each mint box.

GOOD LUCK with this Big Grin Big Grin

skippy1969 - 2008-12-03 13:29

Good Gawd where did you get that aweful GE???? Tap Toes Leaving One unit I never take out side No No is my minty fresh 100% working Jvc PC-RM100JW.

fatdog - 2008-12-03 13:31

Oh, man! That BomBeat 16 is friggin' gorgeous! Ira, I think you've just inspired me to add another one to my list. Wink Cool

71spud - 2008-12-03 13:31

That shelf looks it might fall down any minute. You better send them to me before something happens to them. Then you don't have to worry. I will send you some beaters to play around with.

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 13:51

ok -- thanks for the admirations Smile

and hey - skippy -is this the first time you have been referred to as 'prominent' ?? Laugh Out Loud

skippy1969 - 2008-12-03 14:22

Prominent....... what is that??????? Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

gluecifer - 2008-12-03 14:23

haha love this post. It's an eternal question.

I never thought I'd trust myself to carry any of mine around, but I do to work now all the time and if I go anywhere else. It's something I worry less about as with a bit of care they can withstand the little knocks here and there quite well, and of course all get used to their capacity for listening to.

It is a constant battle to weigh up the risk of damage versus pleasure of intended use with some of them. I still find it hard to bring myself to take my RISING anywhere.. even though it's not mint, just because I'd go crazy-ape-bonkers if anything terrible happened to her.

On the other hand I'm not one for keeping things in boxes.. I've taken vintage collectables and toys and such out of their 'mint packaging' to enjoy them as intended many times before, so it's not that hard for me to do the same with my radios.

But that's just me.. everyone collects for different reasons and a healthy dose of paranoia about something going wrong with them is going to be to their benefit in the long run.

Rock On.

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 14:32

glue -- i have no solid 'science' to back this up --
but there have been serious SCARY posts here --about how brittle these old plastic cases are now getting --

and the bigger the box --the more 'spinning torque' it wants to have --
so - its often unwieldy - just to gets these thru a set of doors !!

lets not let all that stop the fun !! Smile

71spud - 2008-12-03 14:58

Old plastic... yeah, I guess that might be a problem beyond just discoloration. I wonder which brands and time periods are more likely to experience issues with brittleness...

masterblaster84 - 2008-12-03 15:24

71spud - 2008-12-03 15:28

Why do you guys have the munchies all of a sudden? How does this sound----

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 17:15

hi Prime -- ONLY YOU and possibly (???) that blind Oldskool could notice that --

in fact --this is no sh1t -- when i was cropping the shot --i left that in there on purpose !! Big Grin

billpc55 - 2008-12-03 17:52

well i dont have much time for fun or partying.
i mean i am a pretty hardworking music maker so that being said i have used more than a couple of the boomboxes as a make shift keyboard amp on occasion.
sometimes when someones over for a garage jam one of the boomers comes out to fill in the role of amp.
heheh i mean the looks on some of these peoples faces is pretty funny.
that cant be loud enough for me to play my guitar tho.
yes it bloody well can.
i havent busted anything yet.
i dont believe in having stuff you never use. its ok if someone else does its their own decision.
i will say this tho the pioneer i have is totally off limits for people to use for anything. Big Grin even my better half is banned from touching that one.

jt - 2008-12-03 19:00

My boxes (the ones with working tape decks) get pretty regular use here in the house and on road trips. The only "hood" use my boxes see are the occasional trip to the community pool to raise some eyebrows.

I have figured out that I don't really care that terribly much about having absolute mint boxes. Probably for the very reason you point out in this thread, Ira. I want to use them and not feel like I need to worry about them TOO much.

That being said, my GF-9696 and M70 are in really good shape (lets say somewhere in the B+ to A- range) and they do get handled with a special touch.

billpc55 - 2008-12-03 19:05

i dont see much fun being the slave to things in fear of a bump or scratch or even destruction. i mean its better to burn out than to fade aways.
except for the sk-95.
that needs to be usable when i am ninety
i can walk about the streets yelling at kids who listen to music in inter aural implants.
see this this is a boombox.

ghettoboom777 - 2008-12-03 19:08

Hi Ira-Good post.First of all don't do fireworks around your boomboxes!!
The fuse and the sparks can put little pot marks in your boombox!
I did that with one of my Sony's once.
I used to love going out side with GF-8989II.-very special memories(1982'-1985')
I am now using a smaller Sony radio/cassette unit with lline-in on top for C.D. or I-Pod.
Don't have a second GF-8989 yet until then it's the Sony's because I have alot of those.
Have a great one-Ghettoboom777. Smile Nod Yes

Damn right I noticed it! And since it didn't qualify as "minty enough" for your untouchable list, I'll politely relieve you of it at the meet. Big Grin Laugh Out Loud

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 19:36

Laugh Out Loud
well the pioneer is not 'museum' minty -- but it sure does sound mint !! --
-
-and its another one thats way 'too good for the hood' --
which is sort of a shame --since the 3 piece pioneer CK series SHOULD be enjoyed by EVERYONE.

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 19:46

hey oldy --
your avitar is very appropriate--

and cool Cool

928gts - 2008-12-03 20:03

I always bring my boxes outside with me and I love to walk around with them. I get such a kick out of people gawking when they see me carrying my Realistic SCR-8 on my shoulder blasting out whatever may have my fancy that week. I treat all of my boxes with care and respect. I like taking them outside but I make special care to put them down gently, not let them out of my sight and just in general treat them like the special things they are.

Thanks! Big Grin

This was sent to me special delivery from one of our great members here. Smile

billpc55 - 2008-12-03 21:12

Smile

i am glad you like it.
whenever i am bringing home a boombox i get crazy looks from people and some of the kids really like them.
i usually have to travel through some really bad ghettos here with them. its just where i find most of them.
yes canada has some ghettos. i tell you what tho.
i can say beyond any degree of doubt.
our down town east side and surrey central, are far more intense than any rough area i have walked through in the states.
i mean if you go into the wrong neighbourhood here.
you are in night of the living dead.
i generally walk really fast through those areas. if someone wants to talk to me about my ghetto blaster there they are just sool.

its all about the boomboxes for me and never about the

jvc.floyd - 2008-12-03 21:24

the m90 only i have ever touched this box ,the crown is my beater box.

redbenjoe - 2008-12-04 07:58

hey floyd - thanks alot for screwing up my reputation here !!!
i was the one who sold him that "mint" crown 850 --
and he calls it his beater Laugh Out Loud Smile

jvc.floyd - 2008-12-04 08:02

ira not too many boxes ever leave my house and the crown is one that does ,i dont even need a strap i just carry it on my shoulder lol, any boxes i actually take outside are considered beaters even if its one of my less than mint m90's which i have but i'm too scared to take it anywhere so the crown is a great substitute i call it my baby m90 anyway ,dont worry man i havent put a scratch on it yet. Big Grin

redbenjoe - 2008-12-04 08:08

--just goofing , floyd --
i still have one 850 -- its a terrific box --
and not too big or too $$ valuable to enjoy some street gigs Big Grin

the only bad deal would be -- if we smash it up --then its a once-per-year find on ebay.

jvc.floyd - 2008-12-04 08:12

i hear you man ,i just love to put the beatdown on those ole egg thingy's with the crown its a great outdoor box and mean lookin too.

jvc.floyd - 2008-12-04 08:21

just look at her ,i mean this is a gorgeous box.

Well Ira, truth be told everything you've sold thus far... Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

Seriously, very gorgeous. And I rotate all of mine. I have some garage boxes, but my others enjoy time on the patio while I enjoy a nice scotch. Smile
