$406.99 USD for a CEC with original box?!?!
I was watching this auction and hoping that member baddbill could pick this one up. Unfortunately, the bidding got out of hand in my opinion.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310103171961And if you guessed that the CEC will be going to Houston, you guessed correctly.
Wow! 400 bones for this one? I don't know anything about it bt it looks nice. Houston huh?
masterblaster84 - 2008-12-01 14:31
Houston, figures!
Wow they must pay bus drivers very well in Houston.
11 boomboxes in the last 30 days for a total without shipping of approximately $1100.
Won't be long and we'll be reading a news story about a man in Houston who was smothered to death by thousands of boomboxes piled from the floor to the ceiling in a modest apartment.

Oh, that's nothing...
Since August 28th, the same guy has invested over $3,340 in boomboxes (excluding shipping).
(yes, I admit I have certain curiosities)

Okay Dad!
well, kid.
I had one of these! It wasnt a CEC... something else I cant remember. Wasnt my favorite, but sounded ok enough!
Who can put a price on a NIB?!
$406.99... {{{a leetle *yadda*}}}
if two people want the same thing theres no telling how high the price will go on somethings.
as investments. i dont know i honestly do not see alot of these radios being worth too much more than they are right now.
i mean a mint in box m90 or gf777 will most likely continue to appreciate, i do not think all boomboxes are going to keep going up in value tho.
if someone has the money then its up to them how they spend it.
its up to the individual to decide how much its worth to them.
masterblaster84 - 2008-12-01 16:06
That's true Bill and at that price I think they are buying only to have not really thinking about any other aspect.
I crazely bid up to $401 but then realized that was way too much. I was hoping to get away with $100 or 2. But there was 2 other guys eager to win. OH WELL
panasonic.fan - 2008-12-01 17:12
I remember playing with that CEC model, new on the shelf way back when. Nothing to write home about. $409? Without hurting the feelings too much of those that cannot stand for someone to say that it was a bad deal.....
It's kind of similar to the Sanyo M9935K in looks and size, probably not far off sound-wise.

Hmm..... and yet, he still hasn't returned that walkman to jazzrat2000.
Perfect comparison Pan Fan!
9935 just about says it all!
Yeah... old school hip hop and its surrounding culture will age and die down, as will prices eventually. Im with you there Bill.
well i think certain ones will always be expensive. alot of the prices have been driven up by fashionistas that just want one for the whole eighties rehash that has been going on now for quite sometime. thats pretty much run its course.
prices on some of the boomboxes for sure have fallen since lasonics ipod boombox.
there is no doubt of it. a middle of a road eighties boombox has gone down in price for sure.
i do think that there is going to be a emerging trend over the next two too three years with people turning aways from their ipods in favor of higher fidelity listening.
prices on the big stuff will remain stable. there will always be someone who wants a huge nice boombox and they will be able to pay.
i dont have much money wrapped up in my boomboxes. i like the thrill of the hunt more than anything. finding them pretty much all in the wild or off of craigs. the whole ebay bidding thing isnt for me. some guys are into it but me being able to buy some of the stuff i thought was cool as a kid for a miniscule ammount of cash is the best.
like the boxed walkman i got for five bucks the other day.
i could sell some of my boomboxes for pretty good cash but i seldom sell any of them. i guess i just dont look at this as a way to make money. i just like nice sounding old radios.
a fool and his money are soon parted i guess
Damn, that's one nice box!
$400 though? - I don't know...
themightyrepairer - 2008-12-02 12:34
i had one of these.. they look nice.. but biult really cheap.. certainly not worth what it went for in that auction.. but to each there own i guess..
I feel it has a good build quality for an AKA.It is heavy for its size.Functionally it is a very nice box, nearly perfect really. The line-in is wonderful. It's also quite loud in an old school way.I have a near mint example and a project box I have some plans to modify.Despite the imposing looking horns on the front of this box,it only has the single full range stereo drivers you see on the front. There are no tweeters!A set looks very easy to fit so I plan to mod my spare box with a set.
IMO,$406.99 is a bit much for a box not having high frequency drivers.I've never understood the attraction of a mint in box item,at least not paying extra for it.The original owners of most of these threw out the packing materials because they add nothing to the experience of using the boombox.Kept packed away inside you are unable to enjoy the looks of it while it is not in use.If you put it on permanent display you have to find storage for the packing materials (space you could reserve for another actual boombox
) .The cardboard box really doesn't look like much anyway.A manual, though nice to have for it's own sake, would be totally unnecessary as it's a completely intuitive boomer to use.For all these reasons, why pay
hundreds of dollars more simply for bragging rights?Of course If you don't pay extra for MIB that's a different story.
These are just my opinions. We all have our personal reasons for what we do.It's a valid argument that the price difference could easily have been spent on services or eating out, etc, for which you have nothing to show. It's all up to what you want. However,if assessing the average bid price for this model CEC,this figure should be thrown out.It doesn't reflect the norm for those wanting a complete, clean, and functional example of this box.
I'm new to this site, and have been reading the posts for a while now.. Figured I'd jump in on this discussion.. Hello to everyone...
watched this item skyrocket in the last 7 min's
Was going to bid, but once it hit 200.00 +, common sense smacked me and said "You've never heard of this box before!!!!"
Must say it looks nice though... NIB.. does kinda get me excited!
later-
John

Weclome johnygto!
Smart decision, the only reason that box went that high is because of the cardboard box. If your still interested I would be happy to sell you one of my mediocre boxes with a cardboard box for $400.
Just joking but welcome and strap yourself in for the ride. Once you start collecting it's hard to control.

Spud I run pretty short of that already
My wife calls it a "Sickness" lol
She tolerates my hobbies pretty well... she can't believe people (myself included) pay as much as they do for the boxes... I hope there are more like her with old M90's GF777Z's WX-1's and all those other big old radios lying around
SELL THEM TO ME FOR $5.00 a piece
I have quite a few boxes, but hope to find more locally in the thrift shops, GoodWill, etc. - Ebay is nice (I've gotten plenty off there) but it gets carried away from time to time...
Thanks guys for the warm welcome...
Johnny

PF that's freakin hillarious, damn near fell out of my chair.
You don't see a CEC (whatever that stands for) on Ebay very often, so maybe some people just want something rare and are willing to pay a premium for it. To them, it might be better than spending $400 on something that everyone and their mother owns (such as M70 and GF777)
I agree Reli, I think to each his own... I mean come on I like D8444's and GE's
I read enough posts to know there not favs, but I can afford them and like there (some) looks...
Anyways - not gonna get too far off topic
Johnny
