I'm on the road this week, and was too lazy to pack up any boomboxes for the motel stays, so while I enjoy my i-book, it just is not a good substitute for even the weakest of boomboxes, as noted by the size of the speakers
But in general, with i-tunes the i-book is a great portable music station, but no blaster
The sad thing is that I saw about half a dozen old boomers in the basement of the Wheeling, WV St Vinnies store just the other day in my travels
I take my Laptop everywhere I stay and manage/play my iTunes music from it while plugging into my Panasonic 5050 for bigger sound. (iPod into laptop, laptop into Pana) Just me.
I have a Toshiba Satellite with Harmon Kardon speakers and a little sub on the bottom. Of course its no boombox but it's good for what it is.

Speaking of subs, I do have a Harmon Kardon i-Sub 2000, but it is in the repair shop with a fried transformer
I use iTune to get the music (or other semi-legal sights).... I then record them onto MiNi Disc via the computer's "Line Out" -headphone jack- (thus recording the Old School way).... And I bring the 9191 or 9595 MiNi Disc ibrid to listen, they DO sound nicer than those mall speakers
...... One day it will be a GF777 dual MiNi Disc ibrid player.... but that one might not be caried around as easily...... the size!
