Hey whats the good word people?
My name is Paul and I'm fairly new to this site.
I wanted to get your opinions on my next box I wanna get. I'm looking for something with a big bass sound and nice highs but without breaking the bank. I'm partial to JVC, as alot of you are, but I'm willing to look at any brands with nice sound. So please let me hear your thoughts.
Below are some of my preferences of features
(but I guess beggars cant be choosers):
- Seperate bass and treb.
- VU meters(analog or digi)
- One peice design.
If this is too vague let me know.
Peace,
Paul Z.
Hello Paul and welcome to stereo2go. Ah big bass without breaking the bank I would have to say a JVC Kaboom box has plenty of bass to spare and no need to break any banks also I would recommend the Telefunken Studio Hi Fi 1M this one has big bass VU meters it is however a one piece boombox. Good Luck Paul.
How about a JVC RC-656C
It has all that you are looking for; except as noted below,
only 5 led's for both channels works only for when Cassete is playing.

In my eyes the best choice for you would be the Goldstar TSR-800 and it's derivates.(eg Prosonic)
Unbelievable bass in this box!Nice highs, seperate bass/treble,Line-In,ASAP,well fitted analog VU and a classic one piece bulky design.
Not that expensive too.
(around 100€ or less in germany)
Here is a pic of mine:

You may also check out the Crown CSC-850.
Another great sounding unit in the mid-size department.Another big bass pumper for very good money.
yet again features seperate controls for bass/treble,analog VU's and a classic look.
but it doesn't have a classic handle..check out mine here:
I'd say that the Goldstar TSR-800 and the Crown CSC-850 are the best sounding units in their class and they both are rather cheap compared to the big empty boxes..And they do outperform A LOT of well known boxes
As already posted, Pioneer are good bets and the SK-303 / 353 units can often be picked up for peanut prices on the bay..
Not necessarily the loudest in sheer brutal volume and wattage, but a real nice deep 'hifi' quality to the sound which makes them very listenable without the 'shriekyness' of some boxes.
It really depends on what you expect (how much bass,etc.).The problem with the really classic and popular supersized boxes is that they will usually be bid up pretty high if your looking on Ebay. However, there are some mid sized that can keep up with the larger boxes.Really "under the radar" is the G.E. 3-6000.Also it's brother, the 3-6035,which includes a digital tuner. These do not usually get high prices though they are VERY loud, have really good bass, bright mids, and sharp highs all with no adjustment.Their styling is a bit sleek, modern, and minimal. That may put some people off but personally I love their look!Sorry no VU meters on these.I prefer the sound of both of these to my G.E. Blockbuster. Both also will often go for below $100.00 in a bid environment.
The Sears 2199,believe it or not
,is a real performer with very solid bass and sharp highs with no adjustment also. The mids are nice too though slightly less bright than from the two G.E.s.There are twin VUs on its front. This wonderful box can be had for virtually nothing even on Ebay! It's styling is also more traditional than the G.E.s.
The really flashy looking "AKA" type boxes are usually very hard to get at a good price. As for most Sharps,Hitachis,JVCs,Sanyo,Panasonics, etc.,there are a core of fans who seem to bid these up in price. However as I recall the Panasonic RX-5050 would be a good choice. It is crazy loud!Though I don't prefer its sound personally, many do like it.I've seen many go for less than $100.00 on Ebay also.
Though you expressed an interest in a one piece with pots, there are some 3-piece that are good value for the money spent. In fact getting away from the classic 1-piece box silhouette will greatly add to your chances of getting a really good deal.If you don't want to spend a lot,you might consider a few of these "sleepers" out there. If you can manage to get lucky the Fisher PH-460 will totally amaze you!The G.E. 3-5268 is really nice also. Both are equipped with VUs.As for '90s boxes, one that really stands out is the Panasonic RX-DT680.Its dual amped power and its equalizer allow you to dial in an Old School sound if you prefer. The sound is very configurable in general which is nice to tailor to the music you are listening to at any given time.As this is a '90s box, your far more likely to run into one of these at a thriftstore or market also.
Alright! Thank you all for the input.
I got no beef with kaboom units, just not my particular style. Gotta keep it old school.
I've had my eyes on a rc 656 for some time now, but I never thought it would have good bass response. I'll be sure to pick one up when one floats my way.
The Goldstars and it's clones, hmmmm, interesting. I've seen a few go by on the bay. Looks promising.
As for the crowns, I really haven't seen that many around. are they a european model? or did they sell em stateside?
Love the Pioneer 909, fantastic. I'll keep my eyes out for one of those models but finding one might be difficult.
I'll also keep my eyes open for the GE's and Fishers. I've got a Rx5050, it's loud, but I need more punch! I'll see if I can post some pics of what I got soon. I dont want to post crappy cell phone pics either.
I hear so many of your stories on here like, "I found one here or there at some crazy low price".
I just cant catch a break. Somethings gonna come my way though, I can feel it!
Thanks again for the responses, much appreciated.
Peace,
Paul Z.

Phew!!!! I only saw your recommendation for the TSR 800, and was wondering what had happened to my Crown 850 brother, but thankfully you haven't forgotten about it.
I completely agree with this choice, and I can safely say that of all the 40 or so boxes I've had, this one very very persuasively pushed itself into my list of boxes I will NEVER EVER get rid of.
A magnificent all rounder.

The 656 has ok sound, good for it's size, but falls well short of anything resembling big bass.
The Rising 20/20 and their derivatives have very good bass, sufficient highs and usually go cheap.
The Aiwa CS-660 has ridiculously good bass for it's size (it can hang right in there with the JVC RC-M70), nice highs, usually goes cheap but is hard to find in good working order.
the 660is awesome especialy with the dsl on but i love the sanyo9994k notice the k model has the loudness button and sw radio another one is the sanyo 9998
The Realistic SCR-8 is a very good unit. Simple ,clean, design, pretty balanced sound.
As for three piece units, if bass is a definite concern try the Sanyo C7 or even better, C9 and the Panasonic RX-DT Bi-Amped 600/900 series are sure bets as well at reasonable prices.
the jvc rc m90 has all those features if you can find /afford one .

Based on Master Zs post,it would seem to me he's looking for performance on a budget. Most of the ones I mentioned take that into consideration. There are a lot of recommendations here for very good boomers. However,if he's looking on Ebay for some of these at a low price it may be very difficult.Of course,we'll have to see what the world economy does.I have a feeling box prices may fall a bit in the future.
fisher 480,490,492 all those are pretty good. right now im really diggin my 490
