I just emailed Lasonic about purchasing a Lasonic i931 and getting it shipped to Australia. It wasn't exactly the clearest reply and prices weren't quoted. Would this be easier if I just went through one of their distributors?

Well he looks like a friendly, trustworthy chap. Is it possible for him to live in San Fran where as Lasonic looks like it's in California if I'm not mistaken??
...well I guess he lives in California now
http://www.facebook.com/s.php?q=Andrew+Goei&init=qThe ease of information on the internet is a scary thing =/

Lasonic charges the most that anyone is currently charging for an i931 (aside from the hideous "Stars and Straps models"). I would not recommend purchasing anything directly from them unless they are the only ones who can ship to you.
The response is pretty much a long worded version of "we aren't responsible once it leaves our hands". They can't provide you warranty service since they don't have a distributor in Australia.
That would seem to imply that you cannot purchase it from anyone in your country. However, there may be another distributor in another country that can give you a better price. Keep in mind that Lasonic appears to be stating that you cannot get warranty service on it.
Kind of risky, but if you really want it you can save $50 US by purchasing it elsewhere.
This is very true =/
Was just sifting through some reviews of it on You Tube and basically the box looks like it's constructed flimsily, it scratches easily and you can't detach the power chord from the main box. In essence it looks kind of sucky now that I've gotten a better look at it. Perhaps I should just keep on the trail of getting an old school boomer

Hey bunyip maybe if we hounded JB HIFI enough in both our countries they might get their stuff together and start bringing them in!! Wont hold my breath though!!!

Oh man, they can't even get themselves together as far as ordering dvd's from overseas distributors goes

Yeah, it is flimsy, but no more flimsy than the original TRC-931 when it came out in '86/'87... Leave the protective film on it and you won't have to worry about scratches... As far as I can tell, Lasonic has never made a box that had a detachable power cord, which, in a way, is a good thing 'cause you can't lose it or forget to take it with you.
If you want a solid built Lasonic, get a TRC-920.
I get paid Monday and I ended up finding a SHARP GF-777Z so I just might end up buying that one, or both even!
or another one of these
Link
Why would I buy another one?

Aha, yep they're pretty sweet. There's even little transformer cassettes inside that turn into robots

You can try going to your local tv stereo repair shop.
(not a stereo store)
Sometimes they will have somthing for a good price.
And they will give some warrenty with it.
I put my name down at a couple the other day just in case they got any in but I'll head around to some others as well. Like specifically seek them out. Good idea =)

Sounds like a cassette boombox is very hard to find over there?

It sure seems that way. I found a SHARP GF-777Z for $500 Australian that I could get but I'm a n00b at this so have no idea if it's too much to pay? Whaddya reckon?
transwave5000 - 2008-07-20 10:50
Im a thrift store, flea market, garage sale kinda guy.
Anything over $20 is too much for me.
I dont have a GF-any model in my small collection.
But than Im not really looking for the big ones.
You can see some prices on ebay and go from there.
Oh the Lasonic
they dont have a distributor for it over there so thats the only way they can sell it to you.

I would give up my entire collection for a perfectly functioning Gf 777
Hey Bunyip
I'm in Geelong, Victoria and a great place to look that I've found is dumps/recyclers. If you have a local tip with a shop that you can visit once a week you can find some real surprises, thats where I got my GF-777 from. It was thrown away and they were using it as a shop radio, until I made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Which was still less than half of what the 777 on ebay is being extorted for.
Good luck.
Rock On.

Hahaha, I think extorted is the correct turn of phrase. I think I'll head out to all the joints in the city on the weekend. Find out where the tips are too? How the hell does one buy something from a tip? And by recyclers..do you mean Vinnies or something? It always seems like those joints are fished out for everything and all they ever have are skid marked, lint covered trackie dacks and old christian worship vinyls =/ I reckon I could get something cheaper than 500 though
Thanks for the luck =)
In Geelong the recyclers IS the dump. Basically people throw out all their junk (paying for the privelege by the trailer load) then a bunch of guys go through it all and what's salvageable gets sold in a shop adjacent to the tip. I don't know if that's what happens up there though. Anythings worth a try. I tell every single person I know/meet now that I collect 70s and 80s portable radios and I've heard the "Oh really? I just threw one out the other day!" story a dozen times already.
You have to start somewhere though.
Rock On.
LOL! Some bloke from the website markertek.com just quoted me $713.75 in all to get me one of these MP3 boxes in Australia. Surely this isn't right and he's trying to pull a swifty here hahaha
Matthew,
Thank you for you inquiry. The shipping charge would be $713.75 USD.
We do accept Paypal.
Please send us your complete address and I'll send you a quotation with
our Paypal account information. Thanks again.
LOL

Must be an error.
But the price for the Lasonic is 149.95.
http://www.markertek.com Lasonic
Yep, $149.95. That's why I emailed them inquiring. Pretty big freakin' error if you ask me
Where else should I try? I'm just worried about how they'd pack this to get to Australia. I've heard some shipping horror stories
transwave5000 - 2008-07-22 07:02
Maybe they gave you the overnight express rate.
Ask for cheapest method.
Unless they were delivering it to my door replete with a bikini model and an assortment of meats and cheeses on a silver platter I pretty much reckon they were trying to rip me off going 500 bucks over approximate price in the name of postage
DAMN!! After much deliberation I finally bought the Lasonic i931. I think probably the cheapest postage to Australia that I'd seen out of the lot
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250274772582So many companies and ebay sellers wanting to charge around the five hundred and something dollar mark for postage =/
Now I just gotta get my mitts on a sweet 80's tape boomer and I'm home and hosed. I'm guessing this boombox collection thing is addictive though
From memory I actually used to have a late 80's Lasonic with an equaliser and something printed on the black metal speaker grills =/ If only I knew then what I knew now
Aah you're temping me to follow suit! This is the third time I've got within a whisker of buying one of these
So far it's only the lack of 240/220V AC input that's stopping me.
Do let us know when it arrives, Bunyip, & what you think of it...
G'day Bunyip. I live in Australia and i have the i931. Some friends of mine went to America recently and brought one back for me
. I was pretty stoked to get it. I wonder how many have made it Down Under ?? Good luck with getting yours and let us know what you think when you get it.
Isolator, i was always a bit put off about any box that wasnt 220/240v too but i soon realised that plugging a 12v DC cord in was not really any different to plugging in the 240v cord im used to ! Just have to remember the ones i have that are only 110v so i dont plug them in accidently
hope this helps
Oh, it has 12V DC in?

Well, that's the last reason for not buying one removed.
...I'm going to get myself into trouble with the wife on this one, I can tell. If she thinks an M90 is ugly, what's she going to think of an i931?

G'day AZA! After much deliberation I ended up finding a box for around the $140 mark on ebay new and the postage ended up being $80 U.S to get it shipped over. I found out they double box it when shipping and I made sure they excepted payment through Paypal so I've somewhat got my arse covered with this. Fingers crossed, it gets to our sunny shores sometime this week or next. The Auction said 5 - 7 days shipping so I guess I just play the waiting game now
And I'll jump back on here and have a yarn about what I think of it when I get hear it in all it's glory!
So you're saying I'll need a U.S to Australia adaptor to plug it in right?
