i think it's fair to say we were all disappointed in the i931, in varying degrees. well, a friend of mine wanted a cool ipod boombox, so i built him one.

this is the proper i931

I'm not disappointed by the i931.
The sound could be better, but c'mon, it's a Lasonic, not an Aiwa/JVC/Panasonic, etc.
There's no chance of building a boombox that will appeal to everyone, so I think what Lasonic have done is "A Good Thing" for S2Gers & commercially brave.

All that said, Krush your custom job is just fantastic.

That's a much cleaner design!Truly this appears like a development in the spirit of the classic box done right.Your version looks much better than the original "i".The rounded silhouette of the '90s and "I" versions has never been a problem for me.It looks more feminine and less aggressive than the classic square design.It's appearance suggests it to be a "sister" box to its big brother classic "TRC" version.

My problem with the looks of the standard i931 has always been the boxes area between the speakers.It's just really messy.In the old days cassette mechanisms were all basically the same size.Also cassettes were an identical size whether they were made by Memorex,Maxell,TDK,etc.etc..Because MP3 players are all unique form factors manufacturers of docking stations are forced to make their models player specific.This ties a docking station to a specific manufacturer of digital media players to have a "tight" user experience.In this case the Lasonic is just an extension of the Apple companies product..For your new i931 to look right you have to have an Ipod which raises the price of the Lasonic for those who don't already have the intended players.What is even more annoying is the fact I have a "Touch" for which their is no adapter provided by Lasonic.I'm still having a problem buying one as it would just look and feel incomplete without a proper player mated to it.

This is definetly an awsome box. You should think about a buisiness converting boxes.

You need to use a black iPod with that box. I don't care too much for how much the white iPod stands out.

Looks nice though.... if you made one to sell I would probably buy it if the price was anywhere near reasonable.

Quite so. Wouldn't have bothered myself if we didn't have 3 compatible iPods in the house.
Looking at it from Lasonic's point of view, if you were going to market an mp3 player boombox, which mp3 player would you choose? Also, you can connect any other mp3 player via the aux-in, I suppose.

If you leave the iPod backlight on & display the album art full-screen, it's cool to have the album cover peeking out when it's playing....
