On this website Sony tells us the cf2500 was produced in 1971! descriptionFour-speaker MS stereo system that set the standard for other integrated units. Easy readability was the primary goal for the controls, which led to a slanted dial scale and other design features that stand out overall. Controls are grouped on top, and the speakers are behind simple lattice grills. The centered Sony logo and other design accents reflect an aesthetic valuing overall symmetry.
On Another Sony website they dated the product release for this from 1972-1974(manufacturing span)

Actually there were three different versions:
from the the cf550

NICE
Mmm theres a genuine elegance to those old Sony's.
They would've certainly stood well out from the competition of the time on store shelves too.
weylandyutani - 2008-06-19 01:24
Yeah they dont seem to get a huge mention round here but seem to have a safistication of their own. Will be interesting to see the build quality of the unit I just brought.Might even shut up our newest member vee hahahaha.
Thanks Jens. Great info. Sony was truly a groundbreaker! And their designs don't get the credit they deserve. I think they look stunning from any angle.
I agree, I knew you joining in here man...

ISS(Inteference Suppress Switch)is same as SONY's term for beat cancel
That toggle switch functions are:
FM mode: AFC ON/OFF
AM recording mode: Beat cancel A->B,
daiwa,your comment about this one:
s2go member daiwa:
Found a diamond in the rough, the only BBX I saw all day at the Vintage Voltage Expo. This year, I didn't buy much (didn't sell much either... :-( ) , but I did look over a booth across from ours, and spotted a little gem of a box, an early
Sony CF-580.Believe it or not, everything works, which is amazing, after a thorough cleaning, this solid little unit kicks out the jams! I shined her all up, soaked her in DeOxit, and tested out my new camera, Nikon P5100, and man, it's takes some nice shots! All the steel and stainless steel doesn't hurt either.
The tuner works well and has a cool feature that's called ISS, tunes in and holds the station that you're searching for. Warm sound, like an Aiwa. The 3rd and 4th speakers shoot out the side of the unit.
The only real problem is that the cassette will only play when in Fe-Cr quality select mode, otherwise, the normal or Cr 02 settings both cause a dramatic, loud humming. Not sure what that's all about. At first it wouldn't play cassettes without the hum, but I demaged the head and it does sound great on the Fe-Cr setting. I hooked it up to my JVC 656 and tested out the lines in and out. Man, this thing is HEAVY! Freaking loud for it's size also. I got crazy with the camera... what a sweet little box, and I'm thrilled to add box #12 to my stable!"

I do believe that this boxes are very underrated, yes.
They don`t have a "rap/hip hop" reputation, but they are nostalgic radios which were built like tanks...
here are a few images from a 1972 japanese sony tape-corder catalog:
also take a look at this rare 1973 unit. is this one in the database??
here a pic from a brutally used sony#-cf2500 IBBN 7-04532

My CF580 come with the owner's manual of the CF550A (
). Altough it's quite similar, not the same. Only two speakers.
If you need some info ... I have the full specification for the 550A ...

Oho!!!
Pedro!
That would be great.
You`ve got a rare document there!
And YES!I would like to see this manual.
If you are able to scan it,wow! Thanks for the offer!
A complete "cf550" research is necessary now.
I really want to find out all differences
for the BBDB files.
Now the differences must be found out. Here are really some BLACK HOLES in the history of early (Sony)boomboxes! Now I have to search the
internet in different languages,and,again,
old microfiche files in libraries. Also I`ll
try to find more old advertisements in
magazines,catalog scans and informations in
the manualĀ“s bible. There might also be some more hints in Japanese and Chinese forums.
I`ll ask Frank (FYJ)for some help.
I`m sure we will find out some more
details with the board member's help too!
It also might be necessary to open some of these old sony's -
possibly there are stamps/id tags or serial info's.
the other day I was browsing a website and it appears that boomboxes dated way before 1971 how true is that.??
Javier, please try to find the website again.
I guess that research wasn`t so intensive...
..........we are at the beginning again then:"what defines a boombox?"
This term is "NOT contemporary with the manufacturing time"
The term boombox for portable stereo unit`s came later.
It`s useless to discuss the terms meaning itself, that happened hundreds of times on this board and led to no results at all.
THat`s the reason ,why I wrote UNITS in the topic and not BOOMBOXES...
-----------------------------------------------
But I doubt that sony produced them before 1971
I tend to believe sony's own statement:

here a pic of my younger 515 - looks still similar design besides the speakers, not oval anymore, still got a nice sound, to me it's a real boombox as it's supposed to be...
Very nice autoreverser!
Now have a look at these two blokes:

I tried to call you under the number you gave me...
can someone tell me the modelof this unit?
javier, just try to copy the 2nd line, and paste it directly into your post -then the picture will appear..
sure: a
sony#-tc1177 IBBN 7-10287
there was a similar one the tc1207 but I`ve got no picture of that...
so this is a TC-1177 correct. so I guess you a already owned this one and you already have a picture.
Nah-only a poor print:
will you be interested in getting this unit I saw this unit at a spaniard website. I tried to register but I have no luck. if you want I can check again to see how much they want it for.
Nice boxes guys
Now have a look at Nerl-206-stereo

both Nerl got oval speakers
